Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

I originally loved the series for the subjects it raised and how it went about it, though it could be a bit stuffy and judgemental at times.I went off it completely when I realised that George Gently had become a hypocrite.Spoiler of sorts. In one episode he jails a police chief for the unfortunate outcome of actions he took to protect his disabled son, yet in a later episode, he happily uses an illegal firearm to protect himself from gangsters and corrupt police. That was the last one I saw, as I lost any desire to see him judge people for behaviour he would ignore in himself.

The best English cop show-mystery on TV.The best in depth characters.MUCH better than the "fantasy" Inspector MORSE.Its not the perfect Oxford police by a long shot. No manicured gardens here!!! Has an after WW 2 social change aspect that is lacking in the others. WW 2 hero teamed with a less than stellar 1960,s dweeb cop.One gets the impression that Bachus cant measure up. WHo Could? Excellent stories ,intricate, but coherent. Happy VALLEY kind of but in the past. I found it to be very well done.Happily more seasons are now available.Maybe they will stop smoking in a later season. All that puffing is driving me nuts!!

Created by Peter Flannery George Gently is based on the George Gently book series written by Alan Hunter and it stars Martin Shaw and Lee Ingleby. The series begins in 1964, George Gently(Martin Shaw)is an honest London detective, a former soldier who fights against police corruption and is always on the side of the victim. Gently's relentless pursuit of London gangsters and corrupt police officers ends tragically when his wife is murdered on the orders of one of the gangsters. A devastated Gently leaves London and joins the Northumberland Police force where he's paired with the young, hot headed Sergeant John Bacchus(Lee Ingleby). The two are complete opposites both in terms of their approach to the job and in personality. Despite their differences they begin to work well together and eventually become close friends, with Gently assuming the role of surrogate father and mentor to Bacchus. The series highlights the changes which this decade brought about for the UK including the abolition of the death penalty, less respect for authority figures, racist and sexist attitudes slowly being overcome and of course the daring fashions and sexual freedom. The stories are excellent and tackle subjects ranging from Police corruption to illegal abortions.George Gently is one of the best British detective series ever made. Despite the good story lines, performances and period detail, the highlight of the series has to be the friendship and banter between Gently and Bacchus. They grow closer as the series goes on and in season 6 Bacchus becomes even more dear to Gently after he saves his life.Martin and Lee have a beautiful chemistry and the quality of the series is such that you can't wait for another season to come along. Long may Gently and Bacchus continue to fight crime.

Inspector George Gently is a clever, astute cop but he spends less time fighting crime in bleak Durham County in the north of England than battling racism, sexism, corruption and general narrow- mindedness, much of which is to be found within the police department! When the coppers aren't taking a "backhander" (a bribe), they're busy harassing or beating up some hapless Arab, Black or Paki. Set in the year 1964, these rambling, overlong episodes reveal such a profoundly anti- police attitude that, as one reviewer noted of the American film **Serpico**, you have to wonder why the title character went into police work at all.On the plus side, Inspector Gently is well played by sixty-something Martin Shaw as the veteran detective who has seen too much and experienced personal tragedy. He and young Detective Sergeant Bacchus, who married the boss' daughter and feels guilty about it, make a well-balanced team with the younger man properly in awe of his superior's integrity, wisdom and powers of observation.
