This movie is the proof that the world is becoming a sick and dumb place

View MoreThis French made but English language sci-fi feature is certainly one of the most unusual films I've seen in recent months and that is really saying something. For a start the story regards a futuristic world full of folks genetically modified while above them sits a floating pyramid full of Egyptian gods......for some reason!? It tells the story of a girl wanting to be human, not knowing exactly what she is but being targeted from all sides each person with their own agenda including a frisky Egyptian god.The movie in many respects looks and reminded me of the television series Farscape (1999) but one thing sets it apart and it's one of the most damaging parts of the film.Live action is merged with animation and by that I don't merely mean the sfx I mean half the characters are animated and animated poorly. The animation is that cheap horrible style you often see in kids cartoons and side by side with live action actors looked ridiculous! The premise of Immortal is solid and the cast were better than I expected but Roger Rabbit did a better job of merging live action and cartoon and that was back in the 1980's! Plus that actually explained why it was full of cartoons, this just looked terrible. If you can get past this (Which I couldn't) you can do worse, but for me personally it made the film look shoddy. The Good: The concept The cast The Bad: Poor animation Holes in plotThings I learnt from this movie: Someone actually thought merging live action and poor cgi animation was a good idea Egyptian Gods are allergic to clothes In the future all women will glue their hair to their heads
... View MoreI give this movie 9/10 only because I would give 10/10 to the trilogy on which it is based: La Foire aux immortels, La Femme piège, Froid Équateur. Read these three graphic novels - or even better, view them as cbr digital comics (it is surprising how much better these comics read in digital form). There are many more levels of action, abstraction and symbolism in the novles, and the whole tone is way more poetic and melancholic than it in the movie. Plus, the end is not a happy one - at least not for all heroes.Reading the trilogy before seeing the movie does not spoil the movie, for Enki Bilal did not condense his trilogy into a movie. Rather, the movie is an alternative (not an abridged) version of the story. It is fair to assume that there were then, and possibly still are, even more versions of this story in Bilal's head.
... View MoreI love Bilal's work, but somehow hate this movie. It is just so out of place. A clean three dimensional animation.. of the story. Movie and book are so fare apart, although made by the same person!Anyway, I saw this version in 2006 and recently back on a Two Disk Special Edition. To say, that Bilal should of let an other director direct this movie, Would be right. Obviously the movie suffered and failed because of it.It failed to capture the raw feel and spirit of the comics. You have to remember that the story was conceived somewhere in the late '70's, and the sign of that time seems to have been filtered out. That is to bad. Now it feels a bit empty, adding an late 90's interpretation to it. Physically it also feels superficial, even though they had a budget of over 20 million to play with. Same with the dialogs, they don't feel right. There is no dynamic. Horus's voice for instance is an serious annoyance, and really badly cast. The rest of the acting cast though is great. It is just to bad the scripted dialog's aren't helping them.Technically they did a lot of great work on this project but frankly, most of it doesn't work visually. For example, the use of CGI for the characters was absolutely unnecessary. Great achievement, but not as effect in this film. It is a bit childish in style ..so uncool though cold. It also lacks physical weight, reality and rawness the comics have. Something an great make-up artist could have given it. Again, the whole film looks so synthetic and empty, while the book feels more organic and filled with so much warm detail, even open in a curtain way. After all, these are all some of the major defining elements of Bilal's style.Nonetheless, I still think the story is an source for an great movie. Although the Egyptian elements may be out of interest or out of time(..), and a lot of pieces are already stolen by other directors and movies. The world of Bilal and his style are still very interesting. There is so much more to the story, then what we see in this movie. If you see how physical additions to the body are becoming common place in society, you can still see the relevance. Lots of angles to be explored here. Maybe a American commercial remake a-la Ridley..?( He is a big fan of Bilal's work) Or Besson, to keep it French, maybe Guillermo Del Toro..All in all, if you are a fan you have to see this or try to get trough. Just remember, the movie is nothing like the comics. They rock!
... View MoreThis movie was a complete surprise. Never thought I would call Scifi beautiful but this movie deserves the praise. The movie conjures a very unique feeling of authenticity and awe or reverence which I didn't think could be done with film. I think this is due to the pace of the movie which is reminiscent of a dream, and the atmospheric music (awesome unobtrusive and emotive). Similar feel to watching and listening to Dr Manhatten from the watchmen. No surprise there considering they are apparently both derived from graphic novels. What surprised me was you gained this strong feeling about the movie but don't really know why. The setting and story were solid to the point of jumping past that point of disbelief into the world of believing. The characters were all convincing. Spoilers:The scene in the bar when the blood splattered god walks in and and has a conversation about body parts and peers menacing at the guy sitting at the bar evokes a feel of violence and psychopathy, something I have never experienced before in any movie.I can only hope the public start wanting more movies like this which have a heart and soul. If you like Scifi you will love this. You may have even forgotten the feelings you had when you read the scifi books of your youth. This film will remind you.Hats off for bringing Scifi Movies to a a new level...bows
