This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.

A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.

HOUSE OF 9 is one of those films I'd never even heard of until it showed up on an obscure TV channel in the middle of one night. What it turns out to be is a trapped-in-a-single-location thriller a la CUBE or SAW, with a typically disparate group of strangers waking up and finding themselves locked in a house. The story has been done before in MY LITTLE EYE, and the BIG BROTHER overtones are clear, but this kind of film is quite easy to do well and HOUSE OF 9 is fairly decent in that respect. The narrative will surprise nobody; initial tensions between opposing character types soon lead to all-out violence and eventual murder, and of course there's a twist ending to turn everything on its head at the climax. But aside from an occasional misstep - a couple of music interludes to pad out the running time, for example - this works well. The dialogue is snappy, the events that follow are surprising but believable, and it all hangs together quite nicely without descending into slasher film nonsense. The cast is interesting too: Kelly Brook is the nominal heroine and probably gives the best performance I've seen from her, as it's more understated than you'd expect and almost like she'd playing herself. Dennis Hopper is a laugh as the Irish priest, and there's novelty value in seeing a cast-against-type Peter Capaldi in a minor part. Watch out for Hippolyte Girardot's creepy husband, though...

I actually really liked this movie, and i don't care what anybody says. I have watched Saw, and this is nothing like it so stop. Seriously. You're over-reacting so much its ridiculous. The actors were very good, and although you had to watch about 45 minutes of the movie before it actually kicked off, it was overall an okay movie. I would watch it again, and probably will end up watching it again. It had some of the same aspects as the saw movies, but this was so far from it. The ending was insane!!! Although the one that survived, i wanted someone else to make it. But the ending will definitely keep you guessing. I do recommend this movie! B+

Well, this film used to be one of my favorites some years ago, but re-watching it now, I can easily notice lots of lame aspects. To begin, all the characters are strangely unlikeable. The only death I cared for was the cop's. And it's a strange thing, since I tend to dislike police guys due to the Brazilian ones. Also, it has a vibe much similar to "My Little Eye" and "Cube", which makes it loses some of it's originality. The main thing that make me like it is the ending. It was very unexpected, at least to me, so it satisfies. Of course it doesn't save the whole thing, but leading the spectator satisfied with the ending is something kind of hard nowadays. Most films end up disappointing lately...

To any readers, you probably have heard mixed reviews about the acting and direction, and the plot of this movie. I am pretty forgiving in these respects. I think Mr. Hopper played his role well, and the remainder of the cast did their parts as well. However, the script, and therefore the flow of the actions of these characters is so completely retarded in nature that it defies basic human intelligence.Locked in as they are, stereotyped even, all human logic says that escape would come before bickering. Now, if the captives were restrained in some matter this would be a different story, unable to attempt any resistance they can only consign themselves to their fate. But they do have alternatives. The beds on which they sleep are made of metal, they could be used as a battering ram against the door, or picks against the windows. There is a firearm, but not once is it fired against the door to weaken it. Even if all that effort was fruitless, the captives still have a trump card, Fire. As I watched the captives guzzle the liquor and then the parolee light a cig, I was practically screaming, "Light the place on fire, you idiots!" Options like these that the characters have need to be acknowledged to the point that they understand that attempt of escape is possible, futile, or too dangerous, and not just buttered over and dismissed. Now I realize, yes, it is a psychological "thriller" and the finer points of what the actors 'could' do is not so much the point as what they 'would' do, but you must consider your audience. Persons interested in thrillers like this pick up on illogical inconsistencies like a science fiction fan picks up on false science. Then you have an audience basically cringing not only at barely moderate acting, but also grasping at straws to believe the utter stupidity of the characters.I am glad I did not have to pay money to see this movie, and I would not recommend it (though since I have posted a spoiler warning I doubt anyone reading this has not already suffered through the film). I must say the only reason I found myself watching through to the end is to make sure the utterly predictable ending happened exactly as I thought it would. The interesting film would be to see what happens to the new set of captives, having been betrayed by their captor.
