Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

If you have a little patience, you'll soon see the progression of an honest family deemed dysfunctional due to its sheer transparency. The title, cast , story arc , rhythm; literally everything is so perfectly captured in its true essence! To know that so many writers and directors were given the power to experiment in the making of this show and yet remain within each and every character's boundary is another remarkable aspect of this show. I can't help but gulp every episode in an instant. Not going to lie, but perhaps it gives me a relief to know that there are worse scenarios that can invade families than my own issues surrounding my own family; and I know that this story line has to originate from some truth if not the entire truth and still I can dig it. Keep up the work... This is not to be missed.. Specially on the basis of educating the world about gender ambiguity and the trials of transgender people.

The sort of message this show is sending in my opinion feels like: "Persons who identify as Trans and their respective families will be cursed in shame, guilt and negative karma." Is that the message we want to be sending to our transgender people? At first, this cute series starring some of my favorite people looked interesting. Unfortunately, it turned out to be just.. a bad creation. The story and series is addicting and I keep revisiting it so there is definitely a story there but the writing is just..bad. The directing is great and the idea its self to bring a show based on transgender families is stellar. There are more and more trans people and thus trans families every day. I loved the idea of the show its self because done the right way, it could send a positive message and help people and families in transition. It could spread awareness. But, the characters aren't very believable which makes them very difficult to resonate and identify with. More to the point, no one on this planet could possibly be as selfish as these characters. The children of the (transparent) are absurdly self-absorbed, narcissistic and every one of them has a histrionic personality disorder. It's just uncanny. With EVERY character, all of whom are completely one-dimensional, seem to command that the earth revolve around them. Gas lighting, deflection, outright little white lies grow into outlandish plaid lying, not to mention deep deception and harming one another and thus themselves constantly. Even the parents' relationship and marriage began in..you guessed it..DECEPTION. Mort was originally dating his ex-wife's best friend prior to marrying and producing these selfish kids. In addition, the series included Kathryn Hahn, one of my fave actresses but as usual, they made her look like an obsessive, neurotic, badly dressed, unkempt paranoid weirdo. They did the same thing to her in I Love Dick, another Amazon exclusive. This bites for her career, she's gone be type cast as the blooming idiot.

I have really enjoyed this show except for one main thing. The flashbacks use speech that is common now but not historically accurate in a glaringly obvious way. For example, the mixed tape song (from the eighties or 90's) had the advice to "be present." This was not in mainstream consciousness or lexicon at this time. It felt out of place and really only came into speech over the last decade. Also, during the scene that is a flashback to an art show, the friend gives a speech in tones that are very millennial and with upticks. Women didn't speak this way in the 60's. They also didn't start a speech saying "my journey." Talking about your journey wasn't a thing back then...that only really became part of speech in a noticeable way in the mid 2,000s. It would be good for the writers to consult with people who were alive in these times to see if the words and speech patterns ring true. It would lend more accuracy to the show.

I'm not at all sure what I expected to see, but I knew that Jeffrey Tambor had received an Emmy, so I figured it was worth watching. Also, when you've watched everything else, you tend to try things you may not have otherwise. The first season begins a bit slowly, which is to be expected, so that they can set up the story and it's characters. It became evident rather quickly, that full nudity is not an enemy of this show. Because I watched all three seasons in two days, it's hard to recall what happens when, but there is a lot of sex, and I mean a lot. If you're not fully comfortable with non-traditional sex, don't watch. You won't like it. I am very comfortable, but yet still was still taken by surprise a few times. Be open, is all I can say.The story of this family is told in an extremely compassionate, warm, and often funny way. It has plenty of dark moments as well, often showing the difficulties experienced by trans people. The story revolves around Mort/Maura, but also around her three children, their lives, and her ex-wife, Shelley. Each character has their own complex issues which are told expressively. Shelley, played by Judith Light, whom I really love, is played too over the top as the cliché Jewish mother. I wanted to like her in this, but it's difficult. There's no other way to say this, she's obnoxious. Sorry, Judith! As for Jeffrey Tambor, he plays Maura with a heavy veil of sadness that never seems to be lifted. It's impossible not to feel for her, care for her, and to wish her total acceptance. I'm hoping that we get to see her smile in future episodes. There's a lot of sadness surrounding her, but never once do you feel it's acting. It seems very real. If you decide to watch, give it at least four episodes before you make a decision. I really like it.
