GirlsGirls; being critically acclaimed and buzzed at Golden Globes for its originality, is a passion project of the creator and the protagonist, Lena Dunham whose creativity and genuine soul is what keeps this character driven series flow frictionless. The series is shot beautifully and the camera work is utterly pleasing which helps seek attention of the viewers. The writing is strong, witty and brutally honest sometimes, which can be inedible for viewers especially for it resonates eerily with reality that we all reside in. The characters or even the actors aren't given priority especially not at the compromise of the story-line which is what makes it different from one's usual sitcom. Addition to that, the series can afford and does offer a wider range where each notes connects and hits to the audience; from humor to intense drama. The primary reason why it works for the most part of it, is the uncertainty on its trajectory and the unflinching bold moves that writers tend to make to proves its maturity and superiority on standing on something that is equally practical as much as gut-wrenching. It is rich on technical aspects like sound department, costume design and editing. It is no short on execution as it communicates with the viewers and offers a palpable environment, that is cozy, raw, bold and uneven, in short an apt depiction of the current generation's social life. The performance is undeniably effective that helps create the anticipated impact on screen where most of the attention is drawn by Lena Dunham, Adam Driver and Andrew Rannells. Girls is a scratch from the beginning, from the characters to the generation, from the writing to the execution, everything depicted in here is ahead of its time and preaches its genre to stand alone through not the characteristics of the characters but the three dimensional character itself.

Okay, I get that it addresses real issues of life for people this age, and I respect that. But, it gets kind of hard to watch after a bit. Not because of subject matter or quality of the acting, but because of the characters, especially Hannah. She is the most self absorbed, annoying and attention seeking character that i've ever watched. She can't do anything unless she is the center of attention, and has to make people feel bad for her all the time. She always talks about herself, and I never see her ask any of her partners anything about themselves, and always has to turn every problem that her friends have into something about her. It's also pretty obvious that Lena Dunham writes and produces the show, because she always gives herself the most lines and the most drama (I get that she's the main character but still), and doesn't characterize the supporting characters at all and never elaborates on their drama. Overall, pretty eh show.

I quite liked the first season, so I was surprised the following ones were so awful. The show deserves kudos for showing the female body as it is and for the realistic view of sex. Unfortunately, that's not frequently done in this industry. And why I didn't like it? The script is random and full of clichés we had seen in so many series before. You can actually predict what will happen. The show lacks any psychological depth. Hannah has OCD in one episode and then never again. Marnie's ex first gets very rich and then loses everything to the point of selling drugs in the park. Marnie - an independent, self-confident woman at the beginning of the series - turns into somebody completely different, directionless later. I liked the persona of Shoshanna, since she was more probable psychologically than the rest of them. To bad she was the one appearing least in the series. Some acting was bad, most notably that of Allison Williams. Although to be honest, I sometimes had the impression the actors just found it difficult to tell lines which were so out of their characters.Another problem is the veracity of the life portrayed. The series seems to tell us you can live in NYC, wear trendy clothes, party till you drop, do drugs and go to gym several times a week, all that without having a job or any other source of income. Just, you know, money will magically appear every morning on your table. That contrasts with the series' alleged aspirations to show "real life". Lena should have presented this show as one about fashionable, upper middle class twenty-somethings in NYC openly without a pretense to represent the real life of twenty-somethings including money problems. The series is pretentious. I know in your early twenties most people tend to use words like "life", "forever", "love" too much. However, their constant use in dialogues makes it really difficult to watch. There is just too much drama. It's like reading teenager poetry.Finely, I would like to mention here the author's uncritical attitude towards Hannah. It's very visible that Lena identifies with Hannah, who is her alter ego. This is problematic, since Hannah is treated positively in the script even when that's totally unrealistic. Most attractive men get attracted to her. She is constantly told she has a great talent, although, honestly, we don't see much of it. It is showed that people, even random people, instantly like her, although she really gives them no reasons to be friendly to her. It's a kind of a therapeutic series for Lena I would think. But this treatment of Hannah disturbs the realism of the world portrayed and makes the show difficult to watch.3/10

The characters in this show are the most self-absorbed egotistical people I have ever seen. Everyone acts like Lena Dunham has mastered the craft of writing, but when I watch these episodes I think to myself.." I could have written this on my coffee break" I mean seriously ,1 entire episode was Hanna bickering back and forth with a male writer about his misogynistic views and then having the camera cut to a shot of his penis before rolling the credits. Uhhhh .. where is the writing?? This show is just a dizzying portrayal of a bunch of lazy and confused millennials eking their way through life. I tried to warm up to this show, but in the end, it is what it is.
