Fortitude is intriguing and becomes more so. It moves slowly so you become complacent and then someone steps out from behind a door and they have a large sharp knife in hand and they are not cleaning fish. The landscape is beautiful and cold. The pace of the series is an acquired taste and you may wish to think you have finally grasped what the hell is going on and then you find you're as cold as the frozen landscape.Nothing seems to be as it first appears. The local police hero is well find out for yourself. The innocent, well on second thought not sure there are any in this series. Maybe I should say victims but I think they are all victims or will be. It would be nice if they solved something once in a while and could move on to a new twist.I just found this series and don't even know how long it will last. The cast in this does a really frightening and fantastic job.....some real psychos.....

Season 1 was riveting. It was interesting, suspenseful and intelligent. I particularly enjoyed Stanley Tucci as a detective sent to the tiny, snow covered Norwegian town to investigate a possible serial killer. His Det. Morton is calm, serious, and dedicated to his mission. He is met with resentment from Sheriff Anderson who does not want an outsider taking over his case, especially since he too may have something to hide. Tucci's understated performance as Morton is a perfect counterpoint to the quirky inhabitants of the town who live in that isolated community. The investigation takes an unusual turn and a plausible sci-fi element is added to the plot. The show is highly recommendable. Unfortunately, season 2 was quite different. Season 2 is again about solving murders but involves supernatural forces, mad doctors, corporate plots and bizarre plot twists not remotely believable. Det. Morton is not in season 2. Sheriff Anderson's personality is far different from season 1 and less interesting. Without Tucci, it seems the producers wanted another "name" American actor and hired Dennis Quaid. But while Tucci always disappears into his characters, Quaid always plays Quaid. Here he is again the tough, smart, honest, forthright town citizen trying to help solve the mysteries. The entire production seems more like a cheesy Si-Fi network movie.

Overall it is a very good show, but I've just got to think I'm seeing it differently than everybody else.It starts with the murder of someone well educated and very important (he's English). The local authorities are too preoccupied with having sex with everyone to do anything about it (they're Scandinavian). The imported, uneducated labor force is first suspected (they're Irish.) Until they finally zero in on a murder suspect/inept father (he is the only black guy on the island). Thankfully, a seasoned but obnoxious detective shows up to save the investigation (he's American). Because the sex obsessed police chief is too consumed with the sluttiest girl on the island (she's Spanish). I honestly expected the Germans to show up and tell them this happened because of their inferior engineering.Watch it and see if I'm lying.

Fortitude. It's another name for "guts", right?Someone's idea of a joke to give the stupid thing that title, I guess. And boy oh boy, there sure are lots and lots and lots of guts to be seen in this very disappointing heap of garbage. Started out OK, got progressively sillier in Season 2, and I agree with another reviewer who talked about the numerous gory parts, some of which were just plain sickening. I was so hoping Sheriff Dan would die very early on, his voice got more and more annoying as time passed - even more so than his awful over-acting and extra-cheesy grin. And a special mention for the blonde lady cop's way of speaking. Chalkboard. Fingernails. Had my suspicions things were getting weird at the end of S1, and I really hoped it would get better, but it just got worse. Mind you, because it was getting too weird I did lose interest in parts and played some Candy Crush. So I must have missed what happened to the kid that first got possessed. Where did he and his mother go? Who cares. Avoid.
