I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.

One of the best movies of the year! Incredible from the beginning to the end.

There is definitely an excellent idea hidden in the background of the film. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find it.

I have seen this twice looking for sarcasm but can't find any. How often do you see acetylene torches on each vampire's arm that shoot flames out about 6 feet before bursting? The idea was to have the vampire burn up in the sunlight but instead it looks like a training film for a moon landing. This amateurish low-budget poorly directed bomb is a disappointment.James Woods gives a typical wooden(sic) performance. Towards the end of the film he confesses to Tim Guinee that his father killed his mother and he killed his father - without so much a an eye blink. Awful. Sheryl Lee is as beautiful a victim as one can find, but her attempts at convulsing are laughable. She is misdirected. Daniel Baldwin is miscast and plays a clunky sidekick, also a wooden performance. All in all an amateurish, poorly cast failure.

There's something to be said about a vampire flick that dispenses with the usual lore and goes for something new and creative. You won't find garlic or the fear of crosses in Jack Crow's (James Woods) arsenal, he's dealing with a Master Vampire who's determined to crack the taboo of bursting into flames with the first hint of sunlight. The entire scenario is placed under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Church, with a crooked Cardinal Alba (Maximilian Schell) forsaking his vows to team up with the indomitable Jan Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith). Since I don't know any better, it appeared to me that Montoya's (Daniel Baldwin) emphasis on reciting Rules for Hunting Vampires might have been the inspiration for a similar treatment in "Zombieland" a decade later. That one was done for kicks, however Montoya was pretty straight up and serious about the whole thing. My favorite would have been 'You can't kill a Master at night'. Considering their camaraderie throughout the picture, it made sense that Crow would catch Montoya a break at the end of the story. Until they met again of course, and then he'd have to get the wooden stake ready for his buddy. I'm sure there was some kind of unstated rule on that too.

I liked several things about this film - the cast worked well together and the cheesy dialog was refreshing. But the film became too ridiculous, even for a fantasy vampire flick. The main vampire went from scary and ruthless to a guy with bad make up fairly quickly.I liked the campy feel but don't take anything seriously or you'll be disappointed. I liked the film, just not overjoyed by it. I normally don't care for James Woods, but he did a pretty good job as a vampire hunter. Probably the best feature of the film was the special effects. It is old school, no CGI - and I liked that a lot. It's a decent film to watch if you have the time, it is entertaining and fun. I was hoping for a bit more from what I had read from other reviews.
