Terrible acting, screenplay and direction.

... View MoreAnother week, another Seagal flick on telly – at least that's what it feels like, given the prolific nature of the star's direct-to-DVD output in the past few years. The good news is that RENEGADE JUSTICE manages to be more purely entertaining than at least three recent Seagal films I can name (ATTACK FORCE, FLIGHT OF FURY, OUT OF REACH) although I still think it's pipped to the post by PISTOL WHIPPED, a film I like for some reason. The reason this film works is that it offers the sort of pure, pared-down entertainment Seagal films want to see: namely mucho ass-kicking and violence throughout.Things kick off with an innocent man gunned down on the streets and soon Seagal's in town, whupping backside wherever he goes. There's some kind of drugs war going on between rival gangs, but Seagal's not interested in any of that – he just wants to kill the man responsible for his son's death. His quest follows the likes of TAKEN as he single-mindedly works his way through anybody who might remotely be connected to the crime, and he also takes time out to give a gang of skinheads a beat down along the way, too. This film works because it's action packed. There are lots of fight scenes, and the good news is that Seagal's present for all of them (he's occasionally doubled in long shots, but at least it's his own voice here, too). They're exceptionally violent, brief and vivid, and usually involve our hero kicking the criminals in the groin, breaking their wrists, noses and sometimes their necks, too. Along with the hand-to-hand combat, there are some shoot-outs here too, which seem to have taken inspiration from Robert Rodriguez's PLANET TERROR in terms of the amount of blood that sprays from somebody's body when shot. These are some of the most gruesome blood sprays seen outside of Japanese cinema, and I admit I wasn't expecting that. The story is kept simple and the dialogue is a detraction; this is the most profane film I've seen, even more so than a Tarantino movie, and not in a good way. It just shows a lack of creativity. Still, Seagal is on good film, making an effort to act for a change, and there's a nice one-scene cameo from Danny Trejo thrown into the mix too. Add in some attractive ladies and a cheesily hilarious car chase and you have RENEGADE JUSTICE.
... View MoreSeagal plays some sort of ex-CIA/Shadow op/Agent guy with a shady past, who is in town because someone shot his son, and made lots and lots of blood come out of his back.Thats really all you need to know. This is basically a retread of 'Out for Justice' but with a longer time-line and a bad guy who doesn't have a death wish. But this is the best movie Seagal has made in a very long time. Gone is the dubbed voice, Gone are the pathetic fight sequences, and in is a much meaner Seagal, one who means business. The inclusion of Griffin as the Bad guy may make people balk at the idea, but he is actually quite convincing, and is quite intimidating in some scenes. It's still miles away from his Golden age ar even Silver age of movies, but it's probably his best direct to DVD movie he has made. It's short on running time, doesn't have a convoluted plot like a lot of his films, which makes this a lot easier to watch. This is just an action revenge movie, never really testing the grey matter, which should happen in all action movies of this type.
... View MoreFirst of all I am going to say that Steven Seagal is one of my favorite action stars of all time. Yes,his ability to act can be questioned .But because of his lightning fast hands, and his ability to never run out of one liners is what makes him an action star.Okay lets get on to the movie. The story is simple : Seagal plays Simon Ballister. An ex-special forces who has a son who is in the police force. His son then gets killed in a gang shootout. Now it is up to Ballister to find out who did this to his son and why.Firstly the good points about the film. I am not going to spoil anything for you only that you should at least give this film a rental if you are not a die hard Seagal fan. The directing is pretty decent by a one DonE.Fauntleroy(who also directed Anaconda 3:Offspring).Seagal has a few funny one liners in this film like " I'm starting to get scared...,I'm starting to get scared ! Come on rob me!".The action scenes in this film are short but pretty decent in a Seagal flick. The fight scenes are decently choreographed and fans of Seagal will not be disappointed as he kicks ass a lot in this film. Now on to the bad points. There is one car chase scene n which it pretty long to me. And it seemed that Seagal is the only one who hits the bad guy's car all the time. And the worst thing is that these two bad guys are armed with a pistol and an SMG. while Seagal is only armed with his signature pistol in almost every film. They manage to miss almost every shot they fire at Seagal. Also the CG in the driving scenes were too fake for me. Although I cant really blame them on this topic as the are filming on a tight budget.Other than that, thats all I can say for this film and I give it a 7/10 for it is one of Seagal's better Direct-to-DVD films out there, than a few of his failed B-movies like Attack Force and Against the dark
... View MoreUrban Justice starts as Los Angeles cop Max Ballister (Cory Hart) is shot & killed in an apparent drive-by gang related shooting. Max's father & all round hard as nails ex-cop Simon (producer Steven Seagal) is obviously upset about his son's premature & violent demise & decides someone is going to pay. Simon rents out a dump of an apartment in a gang controlled neighbourhood & sets about beating the crap out of every lowlife, drug pusher & gang member around until he gets the information he wants. Eventually he finds out who killed his boy, he gets himself tooled up with lots of guns & sets out to kill the shooter & anyone who gets in his way...Known as Renegade Justice here in the UK this was photographed & directed by Don E. FauntLeRoy who again teams up with washed-up action star Seagal for the third time after the pair had previously made the equally terrible Today You Die (2005) & Mercenary for Justice (2006), well it seems that it's third time lucky for FauntLeRoy & Seagal as I have to say I thought Urban Justice wasn't too bad an effort at all & certainly a lot better than most of the straight-to-video/DVD abominations Seagal has starred in over the past few years. The script is a fairly routine action revenge thriller, it's nowhere near as gritty as say a vigilante thriller like Death Wish (1974) or as exciting as some of Seagal's earlier bigger budget films like the two Under Siege flicks but for what it was & what I had expected I was pleasantly surprised. The plot is your basic 'one man army' seeks justice & revenge after someone he is close to is murdered as Seagal is pitted against the drug dealers & gangs of Los Angeles who are rather stereotypically all black & carry guns. The scenes of Seagal & these gang members facing off trying to look & sound cool as they try to out swear each other are quite funny. There's plenty of fights, shoot-outs & bad language to keep one entertained & pass the time but the story is predictable & if I am honest pretty weak.In these politically correct & overly sensitive times it's interesting to note that the black character's make several racist slurs against Seagal (calling him a 'white boy', etc.) & the other Caucasian character's yet not one single racist or derogatory term towards a black character is uttered by a white one. The action is mostly confined to some rather good fights, this is Seagal of old breaking arms, kicking, punching & generally hurting the bad guy's. There's several shoot-outs too with a particularly gory one at the end. There's an attempt at a car chase but on a limited budget it doesn't look that great. I wasn't keen on some of the choices made by the makers, in particularly the use of slow motion at points that seem totally random. Apparenty Urban Justice almost got a theatrical release. With a supposed budget of about $12,000,000 this has pretty good production values & is well made. The acting is average really, Seagal mumbles his way through his part as usual & I think it's looks like he's lost some of that weight & he's more believable in this as a result.Urban Justice is not any sort of masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination & isn't even in the top five Seagal films but it did pass ninety odd minutes harmlessly enough & entertained me in the process. Much better than I had expected & the best film Seagal has made in years.
