The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

This was nothing to write home about, and even worse little kids won't care about anything that is happening. Quite an embarrassment and with one of the shortest running times (a little over an hour) which is actually a good thing. This story has been done thousand times over, and just about always done better. Ewan McGregor is wasted, and he tries his best with what he's given. Just a huge mistake on not using your voice cast to their full potential. It's called a script, and even the best actors can't save it. Don't waste your time or your kids time. Stick to the Pixar or even some of the Disney movies to be actually entertained. Anyone that gives this a high score needs to have their heads examined. Even a novice knows this is how not to make a good animated film.

I have to admit that Disney cartoons have always been my least favorite and although they have a few that are really good, most are a bit boring.My problem with Disney was that their animation was dull to me. Some of them like Snow White and actually most of the pre 1980 animated classics were nicely animated but then they seemed to get dull and boring.Even though I am not the biggest fan of Disney it still bothered me to learn they had shut down the animation department a while back. I think that was crazy and they will eventually bring it back.Computer animated movies have taken over the last few years and although I dislike CGI in live action films, I do love it in cartoons. Movies like TOY STORY and HOODWINKED are very fun to watch, very crisp and neat.I thought this movie was beautifully pieced together, but it lacked story and excitement. The characters left much to be desired and its no wonder why I left a vote of 5 and so did almost everyone else who has rated this movie. It is a middle of the road average movie. It will shut the kids up, but keep the adults and older lads bored out of their mind.I will never watch the DVD again and I would not recommend it to anyone. There is a lot more out there to watch so don't waste your time with this.One positive note, The vocal talents were great, especially Ewan McGreggor and John Clease.

Through the use of CGI this sweet story about patriotic pigeons brings smiles and occasional laughs to the heart of the viewing audience.Valiant centres on patriotism and brings frequent emphasis to 'what is right' in society. An interesting concept for an animated adventure. The use of pigeons is highly amusing for younger audiences but the viewers watching will see how committed the characters are to helping their country. Was this something they were trying to pull off? Through the use of the central protagonist 'Valiant' we are able to see his personal devotion to his country through the difficult war times. Personally i thought Ewan McGregor performed well, given the strength and determination required of the character The movie preaches through the brave little pigeon 'Valiant' who wishes to enrol in the Royal Pigeon Service. Highly predictable and unfunny for many older audiences but younger audiences will love the film as the pigeons have frequent meetings with physical objects, rude child centred humour and the general movements of the animated characters combine to make much lovable animals. At times such as when they enter the academy there are questions of realism. As the film centres around children they will be able to believe the happenings but for older audiences the ideologies may be a little harder to take, dropping their personal likeness for the film. I thought a few incidents were over exaggerated, particularly the ending. However its a good laugh at the end of the day and we have to accept it for what it is.The effects are stunning. The CGI used to create the film are used to full effect as we have many different characters such as the Falcons, Pigeons and scenery all combining to create a visually stunning film. The attention to detail for the scenery has to be admired. We have the typical 'Badguy' base for the Falcons with dark iconography The story was well thought out but at many scenes the plot failed to captivate the audience. The majority of action scenes are predictable and over exaggerated but all combine to create a fast moving and chuckle-some comedy animation for all ages though the film succeeds in winning the hearts of younger audiences.The voices of Gervais, McGregor and Cleese are all recognised and are funny, especially from Cleese who audiences will immediately recognise his Fawlty Towers routine is used occasionally to bring a smile to the faces of audiences. Gervais to uses his typical laid back attitude to one of the more likable characters Bugsy. His slickness and child centred style of voice goes down well for younger audiences but older ones to as he above all others pulls out the most memorable jokes from the film.Having the film in different settings such as the training camp was a very effective method. In the camp we get to see human elements such as weight lifts changed into animal elements where they use apples instead of weights. These ideologies are very cleverly thought of and bring the occasional chuckle.With many animations being created as often as an excellent Gervais joke its hard to tell which animation creates the best effects when all are visually stunning. Its now what we expect from the animation CGI industry isn't it? This film is visually stunning and is believable for many audiences. The jokes are frequent and are more chuckle-some than laugh your heart out. Its a worth seeing film but not one you would go out of your way to watch.Great film to watch and is recommended

Valiant, voiced by Ewan McGregor, is a small pigeon hoping to join the elite Royal Homing Pigeon Service, a group of carrier pigeons serving Her Majesty during WWII. He's finally accepted into the motley "Squad F" crew who find themselves on a dangerous mission to rescue a captured pigeon, voiced by John Cleese.Valiant tries to appeal to both adults and kids but it ends up alienating both of them. The WWII concept is a nice idea but they really didn't do anything interesting with it. The whole idea will go over the kids since they won't be familiar with it so the film relies on cheap gags for laughs. The usual burping, crashing and lame bird jokes are all present here and only a few of them actually work. Adults and teens will probably not be pleased with the humor since it's very obvious and stupid. Luckily, the film is really short and there isn't too much to sit through. The sad part is that the three credited screenwriters couldn't even come up with enough fresh and interesting material to cover 75 minutes worth of film.I think the main reason why the film is so lackluster is because of the weak cast. None of the actors seem to be trying and most of the characters aren't very interesting. Ewan McGregor is a pretty good actor when he appears on screen. As a voice actor, he's below average and his voice was all wrong for Valiant. Ricky Gervais gives the only interesting performance as the voice of Bugsy but he can't really save the film. John Cleese was only average and he's barely in the film. Besides for the last two, there really weren't any other notable characters or performances.Maybe I'm being a little too harsh on the movie but the effort here was very weak. The story was very obvious and predictable. The humor was very lame and stupid. The characters were all flat and uninteresting. The best thing about the movie was the animation and that was only average. Compared to recent films like Robots and The Incredibles, the animation just didn't look very good and it hardly saves the film. In the end, Valiant is mostly a harmless film but it's also a dull one and it isn't worth watching. Rating 4/10
