The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

When it comes to British cinema, I've also had sort of a rough soft- spot, a love-hate relationship with this particular style. On one hand I find that (for me at least) the accent and cultural differences (when apparent) make it impossible to replicate the Hollywood ambiance and overall mood (a very important factor in Horror). On the other hand, regardless to the genre, British cinema has always been able to create it's own mood, feel, and sense. It either works for me or it doesn't, and when Truth or Die is considered, I believe it has.The story starts off as a British adaptation of the usual Slasher films, when we are introduced to the stereotypical bunch: the good guy, the good girl, the bastard and the b*tch, and of course the only slightly significant stoner. They do embark on the usual journey to a desolate location in bad weather (refreshing, eh?), but from that point on everything is commendably original. I don't want to say anything further, for in this film I feel that any piece of concrete information regarding the plot might be in some level a spoiler, so let me just say that things aren't what they seem to be, even when you think they are.The story, as I've said, is original and worthwhile, albeit a little too unreal for those of us who like to completely submerged in the plot and finish the film fearing the things that go bump at night. The acting is, in my opinion, right on the spot! Each of the characters plays their role perfectly, sometimes to the point of annoyance, but that's the character and that's their job. No profound Oscar level Horror-acting here, but everything is definitely more than adequate. The ending (as well as the scenes leading to it) have several nice twists, just the way I like it, though some of them were (again) too unreal for comfort. Still, a nice surprise towards the end is an automatic upgrade in my book. In summary, while music and cinematography are pretty much average and don't stick out in any way, and the acting is good but not superb, the story remains the main attraction. The overall feel reminded me of The Hole (2001), another nice British Horror, and the story made me think of the Saw series meeting Choose (2011).One could find many better Horror films, as well as many worst. This is not the kind of film to really scare a Horror fan, but is definitely worth watching if you're looking for a nice medium-light scare. Very recommended for couples looking for a nice cuddle during a nice scare on a stormy night.

5.6 stars? Really? I don't see it. The writing is simply bad. The young actors were all incredibly good in this rather ridiculous torture porn/revenge genre flick. The list of idiotic movie decisions is just too long. The acting actually made the glaringly bad calls seem even less plausible. I did find a new love however, Florence Hall is ethereal. She is the highpoint of the film and I lost all interest when she left the story. There is a forced and unnatural trend in all movies today but especially horror to shock even at the expense of the story that I find very irritating. It takes me right out of the movie and all I get is a mental picture of two turbo nerds high fiving each other over the oh, so, big 'shocker' they just delivered and taking a break to pound Red Bulls and play PS4. This contrived end to one of the characters was then called out to the degree of jagoffness by the bad guy taking the body that was in a totally different location and driving it back to where the others were. Why? Too many F-ing Red Bulls, that's why. What makes this a worse failure is it had all the makings of a great suspense film. It had me engaged until the stupid factor got too great and then it was just playing in the background while I went back to work. I will look for Florence Hall and the rest of the cast in upcoming movies, though, so that's a good thing.

After a student is publicly humiliated during a truth or dare party game, the assembled tormentors are surprised to be invited to his country retreat for a party…Yep! We are in familiar territory here, a bunch of annoying teenagers go out in the woods today and head for a big surprise. In fact the story twists quite early on and has great potential, landing the narrative in a sort of torture porn revenger universe, but the makers then rely far too heavily on this aspect and the dialogue is only matched in banality quotient by the plot holes.Even the brutality factor quickly gets boring, it's like covering for inadequacies elsewhere by thrusting the violence to the front to try and save the movie. However, it's not a total washout. There's a trio of jumping-bean performances that remain entertaining throughout their respective stays, and a flip-flop device has some worth even if we have absolutely no affinity for any of these people at all.A tough film to recommend to anyone but the staunchest torture porn/revenger fan, because ultimately it's failings elsewhere are hurtful to the audience's viewing experience. 4/10

The kind of film that Hollywood can't do. A gritty British thriller rather than horror I would say along the lines of Shallow Grave. You will either like this film or hate it. That is the thing with this British type of film. Our characters are typical British teenagers going wild at a party when things get out of hand through the most obvious , jealousy.Move forward and there is another party arranged and our teenagers turn up despite disliking the host because there is going to be free beer (and lets be honest who wont go to a party with free beer)This is where our film takes a twist and a brother out for revenge begins a grisly version of truth or dare. Unlike Hollywood it doesn't take the violence to levels of extreme but you could genuinely believe that there are people out there that would do this sort of thing.Plenty of twists and turns to keep you thinking again something that Hollywood tries to over dramatise but British cinema does so well.If you enjoy gritty British cinema sit back and enjoy.
