I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

The residents of the apartment building Tower Block 31 witness the brutal murder of a young man. However, the case goes unsolved because of their refusal to tell the police what they saw. A year later, a mysterious sniper who's out for revenge lays siege to the building. Directors Ronnie Thompson and James Nunn, working from a compact script by James Moran, relates the gripping story at a swift pace, builds a considerable amount of claustrophobic tension, makes fine use of the rundown main location, and maintains a hard gritty tone throughout. The moments of bloody violence are quite shocking in their savage suddenness. The sound acting by the able cast keeps the movie humming: Sheridan Smith makes for a strong and sympathetic heroine as the tough and determined Becky, Jack O'Connell provides plenty of brash attitude and wickedly amusing sarcastic humor as nasty and obnoxious punk Kurtis, and Ralph Brown does well as rugged old-timer Neville, plus there are praiseworthy contributions from Russell Tovey as nice guy alcoholic Paul, Jill Baker as Neville's feisty wife Violet, and Julie Graham as whiny bitch Carol. Best of all, the extremely streamlined and economical simplicity of style evident throughout ensures that there's no padding or filler of any kind. Both Ben Moulden's polished widescreen cinematography and the spare pulsating score by Owen Harris are up to speed. A real neat and effective little nail-biter.

Far from being a dreary, mundane, shoot-em-up type of movie which from the title we may well expect, this is in places a bloody shocker...who the hell would have a mind to put all this one together? Actress's and actors, well Sheridan Smith(Becky)is well up for perhaps a key role in making this movie come to life, Jack O'Connell, well in the movie you would really want to throw this kind of guy in real life off the roof!!!let's just say he portrays the part he was chosen to act well...Ralph Brown (Neville) had our full approval for what he does....anyway the film was full of action, with a twist we really did not see coming... All in all a good action film to see, it scored a good 6 out of 10 maybe more in some light...

The plot is very simple, the few remaining residents who all live on the top floor of a block of flats that's about to be torn down, end up being trapped by an unseen sniper, whose picking off the residents one by one."Tower Block" is a movie that keeps you hooked from start to finish, with a simplistic plot that never becomes ridiculous or over the top, and even creates a realistic situation which does make it scarier and the fact that you don't know where or why the events in this movie are happening, which adds even more tension and terror to the proceedings.Another terrifying factor of this movie is that no-one is safe even children, which in my opinion was very unsettling and the fact at the opening a young boy is banging on doors begging for help and nobody helps, which is sadly unrealistic. Tower Block really works as a thriller and as a horror movie and doesn't pull any punches and okay doesn't break any new ground but has enough violence and tension that makes an awesome movie. It also helps that this movie has a cast and characters that are very real and played just right. Firstly Sheridan Smith plays the street smart Becky perfectly, who surprisingly becomes the group's leader and has all the right moves that makes her the ultimate final girl. Jack O'Connell also delivers a strong performance, its difficult portraying a guy who's at first unlikeable and awful, but as the numbers drop he becomes more and more rounded, and also Russell Tovey also another standout as the alcoholic loner. All in all This movie works really well at crafting a claustrophobic atmosphere, with a brilliant cast that makes this experience feel very real.

OK, it wasn't great and it wasn't bad, it was what you make of it. Leave all your "buts" at the door and just accept the silliness of what's ahead. If you want a short, shoot em up, barracking for the Disadvantaged people movie, then maybe see this movie. I applauded film makers having a go, coming up with new story lines, new concepts, however we have had this concept of "escaping the unknown" plenty of times, but not so many times have we seen it in this environment, especially in U.K films.. Give it a go and like I said, leave your "buts" at the door.... because you never know what's lurking behind it..
