This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.

The movie starts out with Soraya M. already dead. Her aunt is cleansing her bones in the river for burial. A stranger comes to town who is a French Journalist who speaks Arabic. He is desperate to get out of Iran under the recent takeover of the Ayatollah. His car has broken down and a woman , Zahra, Soraya's aunt, confronts when with a graphic tale on how the men of the village misused Sharia law to stone Soraya M. to death. She even was able to tell him about things that happened in private conversations in which she wasn't present. (Makes for a better drama by filling in those gaps.) Soraya is wrongfully accused of adultery by her husband who coerces another man to be his witness.Several things are brought out in this movie. One is that women lived better under the Shah dictatorship than Sharia law. The elders of the community have invoked Sharia law because it appears to be the wish of the Ayatollah and Allah, and it is convenient for them. The movie is an emotional roller coaster. The stoning scene is graphic and is done that way for a reason: to show you how barbaric it is. It is an emotional tear jerker that will leave you both angry and sad. English subtitles.

This is a depressing, upsetting and truly shocking film. It might be set in the 1980s, but the horrific act of stoning is still, to this day, practiced in many Islamic countries. Knowing that this shocking act of brutality is still being carried out in 2016 makes this film even harder to watch. The film is nearly 2 hours long, covering the story behind Soraya's killing and giving the audience a insight into life as a woman under strict Islamic law. It is a real eye-opener.'The Stoning of Soraya M', as you would expect, is a brutal and shocking film, but one that I think everybody should see.

One of the best film that you will never forget till you die.Just two lines:1) You have to be strong enough to watch the movie, 100% you will end up crying. 2) The reality will kill you at the end. (As it is mentioned it still continues in few places around the world) Usually reality will affect your emotion(s) and definitely you will be disturbed. But this movie/reality will create a great impact and you will feel that you are having a good life compare to Soraya M. Being a girl, I was extremely sad for Soraya M and also at the same time I feel more blessed.Actress Mozhan Marnò portrayed Soraya M at her best. The conversation that happen's in Zahra's house were stunning and I was literally shocked. I salute the director who brought this issue to the world's attention. I hope you will also agree with my point.I won't say enjoy the movie, rather I would say feel the reality. Thanks, Meena.

A tip: If you are born a female, make sure it's not in Iran. They say it themselves: If you're accused of having an affair, and you're a woman, it's not up to them to prove you're guilty, but for you to establish your innocence. Of course with men, it's the other way around. You've bore your violent husband two girls and two boys and been married to him for twenty years. Suddenly one day, he decides to hitch up with a 14 year old girl instead. That's gratitude for you. But you won't give him a divorce, due to the fact it would leave you virtually penniless. So, he does the only thing a nasty bastard could do... he makes up a cock and bull story about you having an affair with a neighbour... and enlists the help of the local corrupt law officials in his plan. And the punishment for such a crime is... well, look at the title. The Stoning Of Soraya M, as told by Soraya's aunt after the event to a journalist, is one of the hardest films to watch that I've seen in many a moon. Throughout, the sense of injustice and frustration at such an unfair situation makes you want to scream, and the uncomfortableness factor is moved up about 50 notches at the stoning itself... when everyone, from Soraya's sons to her own father takes it in turns to chuck rocks at her while she's half buried in the soil. Of course, the injuries are graphically displayed... Making this possibly the most upsetting final act since Jesus's fate was sealed in The Passion Of The Christ. Both are extended slow deaths where nothing is left to the imagination, so make sure you're mentally prepared before submitting yourself to such a brutal experience.Brilliantly acted, and echoing with the ring of truth, as the epilogue reminds us: this sort of barbarism is still taking place all over the world. We may THINK we're civilised, but incidences like this prove we still have a LONG way to go. Disgraceful. 7/10
