A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.

Robert Kurtzmans' "The Rage" is basically for those people who judge how successful a horror movie is by its level of violence. The gore reaches beautifully over the top levels, and some of the grisly highlights are sure to generate enthusiastic laughs of approval from the audience. As for the story, this is pretty damn derivative stuff, but then one can't imagine very many people, including the filmmakers and viewers, caring much about that. This is first and foremost a showcase for makeup effects teams.A demented research doctor, Viktor Vasilienko (Andrew Divoff, star of Kurtzmans' "Wishmaster") is hellbent on getting revenge on a world that seemed out to get him. It seems that he'd discovered the cure for cancer, but pharmaceutical interests wanted to quash his efforts. So now he works in seclusion, infecting unfortunate test subjects with a "rage mutagen" that hideously deforms them. One of these subjects escapes, and allows the infection to spread, aided by the plethora of vultures in the area. Now an inane group of youngsters who'd been attending a rave in the woods are in peril and have to run for their lives. One good thing is that Kurtzmans' pacing is pretty solid; this movie goes through its motions with efficiency. Other than Divoff, who's fun as usual, other draws in the cast include "Phantasm" series veteran Reggie Bannister as Uncle Ben, and Erin Brown, a.k.a. Misty Mundae, as one of the tormented youngsters. Most of the supporting performances are pretty abysmal, but Divoff makes up for that with his villainous portrayal. Overall "The Rage" is generic stuff, but it doesn't pretend to be anything more, and that may be enough to suit some horror fans. The ending falls short of being really satisfying, but until then the movie is good for a number of chuckles and thrills.Six out of 10.

I am not sure why this movie is only at 4.4? Sure its the quality of the re-animator or from beyond, but those where great "B" movies. So is this and the effects with the exception of the vultures are pretty good! This movie is gruesome from start to finish and only truly tasteless once. The sort of bad:The vultures? Who the hell thought up those and how much was spent on them? Not much! But the juxtaposition between their violence and comical look actually added to the sur-realness of the mayhem. The pretty good:Plenty of gore and blood in this little gem of a "B" movie. And good scene chewing by Andrew Divoff, he is great! The rest of the cast are pretty good too. Everything about this movie is over the top and every death is a gory one. There is a lot of entertainment to be had in this movie if you do not take it seriously, and who could? But just watch it for what it is: a classic "B" gore fest along the lines of the re-animator.

I thought Robert Kurtzman did a great job! It has the Mad Scientist and a new one to horror films! It has crazy buzzards, that's all i'm gonna say, you'll have to see them for yourself so go get this movie!I'm a loyal fan to this genre and i'd rather see these movies made then go see a theatrical remake of Prom Night which has been demoted to a PG-13 rating.I don't know about anyone else but i don't want to go see a PG anything "Horror" or "Thriller "movie! This is supposed to be a fun throw back to the 80's type movie and it's what was delivered!I liked Rage enough to buy it and guess what,i bought it after i had seen it so there you go.We as fans need to support these kind of movies or they will be a thing of the past and like i said,"No more PG-13 knockoffs".Keep doing what you do Mr.Kurtzman, good job!I love these movies!brian@b-wear.biz or myspace.com/bwearsportswear

~Spoiler~Well it happened again. I was suckered in by all the rave reviews on the box art; duped into buying this garbage. I no longer trust any horror movie website. "Reminds fans everywhere why we love this genre" No. It doesn't. The Rage reminds me what is exactly WRONG with the genre. A completely ripped off plot, terrible young actors, and the worst CGI I've ever seen. I'm slightly hesitant to say Kurtzman's last directorial effort, Buried Alive, was better than this. That is really a low blow, but true. I should have been tipped off to that fact when I saw that Erin "Misty Mundae" Brown was the star of the film. The Rage plays like an awful version of Re-animator by way of 28 Days Later. Andrew Divoff plays a mad scientist who has created a rage virus that makes its victims go insane with destructive rage. Sigh. The virus escapes by way of the most reprehensible CGI turkey vultures and terrorizes a group of tweens who were attending some kind of Mushroomhead rave. Serves them right. Can I say anything good about The Rage? Divoff is fantastic. But when is he not? Nothing else is remotely entertaining in this film. Not even Reggie Bannister, a favorite of mine, comes off looking good. Why do people rally behind the likes of this and Hatchet? Where is the love for solid, well-acted, scary films like Outpost and Malevolence?
