Good story, Not enough for a whole film

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.

As a Horror fan with strong preferences towards stories involving ghosts, haunting, exorcisms and other supernatural features - I've had high hopes for this film. The title, the poster, the short plot teasers, all pointed towards another great film like One Missed Call or The Exorcism of Emily Rose (combining teen life with haunting and possessions). Sufficing to say I did not get what I had hoped to get. The Haunting of Molly Hartley can be easily divided into two obvious parts. The first 60 minutes or so are an excellent Suspense film (with very little Horror). The build up is slow enough to keep you guessing and interested, yet not too slow to the point of being boring. The characters are interesting enough, albeit stereotypical Teen Flick characters. The sense of curiosity and thrill while trying to figure out what is real and what isn't is just what this sort of film requires. And then - a complete crash.Approximately one hour into the film we learn the overall conclusion, and it is so anticlimactic that I personally have lost all interest in seeing the actual ending. From the moment the unoriginal and not the least well thought of explanation is given, the frustration and disappointment made me so annoyed I almost turned the film off. Think of a runner tripping over a rock then falling off a cliff. It simply killed the story, along with any chance of this film being more than average (and I'm being very kind). The acting is professional, but not great. The cast does a good job playing the generic characters. Impressive, if this were a first year acting school assignment. Beyond that, the film simply isn't scary. A jump scare here and there, some blunt cheats (the bathroom mirror, chicks in bras, bad cellphone reception and other tricks that may have worked during the early 90's), one creepy shot with tons of make up and effects - and that's it. The suspense is there, but the horror isn't.All in all, I'd really enjoyed this film until the terrible second part began. The first part is easily a 7, the second a 3 at most, hence my overall rating of 4 (instead of 5. still too kind). Can't recommend it. Still going to watch the sequel, hoping for a salvation... Probably making a mistake.

I don't think this movie was good. I also don't think it deserves to be called the worst. The plot must have taken all of 3 minutes to write on a sticky note. It was really bad, it reeked of 90's high school movies. It was not that scary at all.It can be a little confusing at first, not because its hard to understand but because the series of events they explain were not explained very well at all.If it is Saturday afternoon and your sick and its raining out side and this is the only movie you have not seen. Watch it.This movie is better then many other "scary" movies I've seen.

Oh, wait, I forgot, it's The CW now! This thing is anything but scary, just more teenage angst, high school girl backstabbing, gossiping...and I couldn't even figure out what kind of monster Molly was supposed to be. And every time she attacks or kills someone in the movie, she feels regret...after she's been attacked by those people! Hello?!? Why should she have to say I'm sorry after being picked on and defending herself? Danny Marianino of North Side Kings still to the day hasn't apologized for kicking Glenn Danzig's ass, nor should he have to after Danzig attacked him first! So why does Molly? Seriously, with Chase Crawford and that blonde chick from Hellcats(I think that's her, not sure, but it looks like her), it was like the CW trying to be scary. Oh, wait! The CW actually DOES have a scary show--SUPERNATURAL! Sadly, this movie was more new 90210 and Gossip Girl than Supernatural. Nothing scary about this at all--except what a letdown it was.

I have tried to watch this flick four times and just keep losing interest. The lead character is completely unsympathetic. The script is too cryptic for its own good. And it is slow, slow, SLOW! At least Chase Crawford is enjoyable eye candy. Otherwise I would make a coaster out of this DVD. (I just tried submitting this review to IMDb and it was rejected since I didn't write 10 lines of text. So I'm adding junk. -- Junk, junk, junk, junk, junk -- just like the aforementioned movie. Looks like I still need three more lines. Hey, IMDb, sometimes brief reviews are quite adequate. Guess more text gives your site a more substantial appearance. Two more lines to go. My fingers are getting tired. Did I mention this movie sucks? Only one more line of text required. Yay! I made it! I hope you all had as much fun reading as I had typing. Let's do it again real soon!)
