Sometime after the events shown in 'Starship Troopers' a squad of Federation soldiers is facing overwhelming odds on a 'bug planet'. General Jack Shepherd orders most of his squad retreat to a nearby outpost while he and a handful of soldiers hold off the bugs for as long as they can. They find the outpost to be virtually abandoned; the only person present is Captain Dax, a decorated soldier accused of murdering his senior officer. Psychic Lt. Pavlov Dill wants him kept in custody but as the bugs attack another soldier releases Dax. They hold off the attack and amazingly General Shepherd and a handful of others have survived and got to the outpost. They manage to get the outpost's defences working but soon it becomes apparent that there is a danger inside the walls. The previous film was very much a war film and while this one starts off that way it quickly becomes a horror film as the soldiers are trapped in the outpost. There are less deaths here but many of the ones we do get are substantially more disturbing thanks to the new type of bug which has infiltrated the base. The fact that the planet is dark and means we don't get scenes of vast numbers of bugs sweeping across a desert; instead we get limited numbers and shots of soldiers shooting... clearly a lot cheaper to film! While the war scenes were a little weak the more gory horror scenes were better than I expected. The fact that we have an entirely new cast of characters is a slight problem; we join them in the middle of a battle and there is little time to get to know anything about more than a handful of them. The cast does an okay job considering there are no big name actors amongst them. Overall I'd say that I enjoyed this much more than I expected... perhaps because I'd only heard bad things about it before.

It goes without saying that the original "Aliens 2" was probably the definitive humans versus animal killer; especially when that animal killer is predatory in nature and exists solely to infest, devour and conquer. The insects, or Arachnids as they are called in this movie series, are no exception. They exist solely to exterminate mankind, multiply and move on – they are here to vanquish anything that gets in their way and propagate their species. That said, this movie makes an interesting twist in the grand scheme of things. The original movie was a bit tongue in cheek, used humor plenty, and gore was often thrown around for comedy relief. Simple 'oops' moments happened when someone's home country was blown up for example. In this movie, the scenery has drastically changed and is closer to the computer generated special that aired around 2003. The genre seems to be a combination of many popular movie genres; but namely, you should see something that is familiar if you are a fan of Jurrasic Park, Alien vs. Predator and Aliens 2; there seems to be a little bit of humor thrown into here as well. However, unlike other movies of this type, there is also some hoard style themes going on – namely people are infected with insects and slowly become ravenous zombies out to infect their fellow officers and ultimately bring everything to the Earth homefront. If anything, this manages to accomplish what the original Star Trek's Borg where meant to be, before they were changed from insectoid to more humanoid cyborgs. Better still are the psychic references thrown throughout the movie. So if you are looking for a survival horror sci-fi flick that spans multiple genres, pays homages to things past, this is the movie for you. If you are looking for something strictly Starship Troopers, you may want to look towards the original movie or the computer generated sequels – this movie will NOT satisfy any Starship Trooper fan unless you want different story modes throughout.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/? p=2507)

It must really suck to be one of the people writing all the bad reviews, complaints about every detail of any given movie. I suppose that if being a movie critic is your job, then you must truly believe your trifling is of some benefit to someone, somewhere in the universe. I don't believe it is, but that is just my opinion.Starship Troopers 2 never made any claims to being a great movie with millions invested in special effects, original music, or location filming around the globe. This movie is about entertainment, and it provides that in spades. When I watch a movie, my only reason for doing so is that I want to be entertained. At the end of the movie, if I can say that I was entertained, then the movie did what it was intended to do. At the end of ST2, I felt very well entertained so, to me, the movie was great.I have always valued the decisions we are permitted to make in life, like being able to turn off or switch channels on the TV, or to be able to leave the theatre if I don't like the show. With ST2 I felt no desire to turn it off. The actors were good, the story interesting and the visuals were good. The film is a lot of fun because it is interesting. Obviously, the movie does not stack up well against much more heavily financed films, but for a $7,000,000 budget it did very, very well.To the critics, yes, special effects, original music scores, and an all- star cast may have made it a better visual experience. Then again, maybe not. Even some very big budget films are total failures. Why? Quite simply, they fail to entertain and become tedious and boring. You cannot honestly say that ST2 became tedious or boring. It was very entertaining all the way through. What more can you ask of a movie? If you like the genre and want to feel entertained, then this movie is for you. If you only are able to enjoy the movies that are critically acclaimed, then either find the critics that rate entertainment for what it is supposed to be, entertaining, or just move on.

After watching the first Starship Troopers film, I didn't have an ambition to view a sequel but for the sake of preventing fans from seeing it and being disappointed, I'm writing this review anyway. Just like the original, the introduction starts with the barrage of infomercials that are just ludicrous to listen to in the first place. Then, after that, the story starts to begin where a group of stranded troopers find themselves fighting off hoards of bug aliens with no back up. Hmmm how cliché.And wait, it's not over, the situation becomes even more dangerous. Turns out the bugs are learning how to be sneaky. Soon a trooper is infected by some parasite (from a bug) and ends up going rogue and infecting all the other troopers. Once this occurs, the plot turns into a normal overdone horror film where one by one, a character is picked off. While I was watching, it reminded me of a mix of Night of the Creeps (1986), and The Thing (1982) way too much. There's absolutely no originality here. Not even the action, music, bug creatures or bloodshed helped this time. Sure it's all there but for what? By the end of the film, the audience is thrown some more infomercials anyway. Almost like the film crew is saying that you, the audience, just wasted your time! The only credit I give is to the film crew for attempting to make a decent sequel even though they abysmally failed. This kind of film is for true hardcore fans. There's nothing great about this sequel at all. Only the real "troopers" will enjoy this and that's a very small amount.
