The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.

I think this film talks about many things without saying that much. The elegance and equilibrium between sound and silence makes it sweet and realistic, with a touch of poetry in the story telling. The story, through the character of a young girl who is learning about life itself, talks about human relationships and how difficult we human beings get to connect with other people. The way is told makes it so realistic that is unfair to compete with any other story that can look similar, because it would win.Important to mention the very fine acting, which could not be other way since the whole film has been managed with delicacy and precision.Smart and beautiful. Not a love story, not another stupid empty drama story. Not a great film, but a film you wouldn't regret, because there's no mediocrity in it.

Long, pointless, pretty shots of cows and clothes pegs fail to compensate for the lack of thematic vision that this film betrays. Abbie Cornish's performance, whether due to poor direction or lack of skill, is truly awful. On the other hand, Sam Worthington shines on screen and does the best he can with an insufficiently developed character.I was looking forward to seeing this film because I'd heard good things about it. It won multiple awards and I'd heard snippets of the lovely Decoder Ring soundtrack over the radio.Somersault is symptomatic of an Australian film industry that's lost its balls. None of the discipline it takes to put together a good screenplay and execute an interesting film can be found here. What a disappointment.

It's a sad and melancholic story about a teenage girl, HEIDI (played by Abbie Cornish), that after run away from her mother's place goes to a distant town to meet again a guy she once met in Canberra. But when she arrives there he doesn't remember her anymore. She feels lost, disoriented, but even so she will try to live by herself, going into the unknown, meeting new people, from place to place… HEIDI is courageous but also a bit reckless too, because she "gives herself" to other people without knowing who's on the other side… For a few times we hear her asking "- Can I go with you?" to guys she already met! But this character is strong, very strong indeed, because she resisted for several times to very bad incidents without looking back, without even think to return to her mother's home… This story is sad and melancholic but it also reveals the strength, the irreverence, the anger and the unconsciousness of the teenage years… It's a very touching story because of that. On one side it's slow, melancholic, almost depressing, but on the other we feel rage and unconformity.I really liked the plot, the characters and the settings, but I would like to give a special mention to the soundtrack. I think it's great! It combines very well those opposite feelings I did refer before, because it has very sad and melancholic tracks combined with rock and dance music tracks. And they're very well integrated in the plot as well.A good surprise from Australia!

Beyond the aesthetically beautiful nature of this movie lies a story that is compelling in its realistic portrayal of young love and loneliness. The story moves along slowly, but I felt that this only added to the credibility of the plot, as most life situations aren't jam-packed with intense drama. The characters are flawed and complex - the main character Heidi is at once naive and youthful, and grown-up and savvy. The story details are slowly inserted, sometimes just through imagery - leaving the viewer to assume much of the back story - the movie does not feel contrived because you aren't being told every small detail and how the director wants you to judge each character. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone that enjoys artistic camera angles, realistic characters and situations, and doesn't mind slowing down to enjoy a good story.
