It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

The movie was very different from the book. Many parts of the book were not there in the film. The book was much better. It should have not been written that is it based on the book. Most of the things were different and the some of the characters were not doing the same things as they were in the book. And some of the characters were not there in the film. some of the parts were removed. Grover,Annabeth and Percy go to the underworld to ask Hades about the lightning bolt and also to save Percy's mom but in the book he is not even sure if his mom is alive. Ares and Clarisse were not there and Hades was made the bad person even though he wasn't.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the lightning thief is a very entertaining and visually appealing movie. First of all I would like to commend Logan Lerman on his performance as Percy, he really captured his essence and portrayed him well, good balance of innocent nice high schooler and a bad ass demi god. Alexandra Daddario is also good in this film. I really liked Catherine Keener as Percy's mother, and pierce brosnan was a smart casting choice as well, he just has such a wise older essence that was needed for his character. And I can't really remember who plays Luke, but I really liked him, he brings a handsome smug look to his character. The visual effects here are very impressive, and it's really fun to look at. I specially love the way they did Hades, I just thought it was really cool the way they designed it. Rosario Dawson has a great cameo here, she plays the sexy cheating wife of hades that really hate him and doesn't want to be in hell. No I've never read the book but I really liked the plot of this movie and I thought they executed it well throughout. This movie definitely is a great choice if you are looking for a good fantasy action movie. Oh and lastly I'd like to give a very big shout out to Uma Thurman, by far the best casting decision of the entire movie, well besides lurman that is. She is an awesome medusa! 8/10.

Okay, where to start. I'm not going to tell every single detail that was changed. I think you know that now, if you've read other reviews.I watched this with my brother, and I was already a bit sceptical. I've read some reviews which said: "This movie doesn't follow the book." I was just like, 'nah, I don't think they can screw up a movie THAT bad?' So, I watched it. And they screwed up that bad.The first problem I had with this movie is its narrating. It's all about Percy Jackson, who says he is a loser, but totally does everything right and he is kicking everyones ass. That was a fun part in the book. Percy needed his companions. He needed the support of Grover and the wit and strength of Annabeth. In this movie, he does everything alone. He said that he was a loser, but his actions did never justify that. Then, let's talk about Annabeth. She is a smart, young woman who wants to prove herself. This is because of her fatal flaw: Hubris. She thinks she can do it all herself, which she can't. But in the movie, she goes on the quest because... Percy is hot... Wauw... Then Grover. He was shy and he wanted to find a lost god, but he couldn't because he wasn't the bravest or the best satyr. In the movie, none of that was shown. I actually don't think that change was bad, but it was executed badly. Grover was just like those CSI cops. Those one-liners weren't funny. I facepalmed a lot during the film. The second problem I had was how the roadtrip was changed into a treasure hunt. No, if they skipped the pink poodle or the Arch, it was okay. But they changed the whole story. They went on a roadtrip to the West, but they didn't know how or where they were supposed to go. They learned about themselves and the strange world they were living in. Every character had their own strength. Also they had their own reasons why they reacted that way. None of that is shown in the movie. It's just this. It felt so empty. And the bad guy. I've read the book first and I knew that Luke was 'evil.' But in the movie, they didn't even TRY to hide that. It was so obvious that Luke was evil! "Kick my fathers ass for me." What were they thinking there? It was supposed to be Harry Potter. It actually looks like Harry Potter! But no! They made it into something like Twilight or The Hunger Games. Not that there is a problem with that, but it doesn't work for this franchise. In those books the villain was already clear, so they went into the: "how do we defeat the villain" or "how do they react to these situations set up by the villain." Percy Jackson misses both completely. The world is so small, the characters are bland, the problems were immediately solved and the side problems weren't involved. The main villain wasn't even mentioned! How can you even do more films when you skip the Titan Lord, who was the one who Luke serves. Luke was the servant, not the lord who came up with the idea. Also Camp Halfblood. It was so quickly over. Percy got there, he walked over the terrain and Capture the Flag. After that stupid CtF (everyone just watched them fight and no one thought about getting the flag) a stupid party because they want a party and then Hades and then Percy's gone. And Annabeth said that she has strong feelings to Percy with the most blank face ever. Is this the Annabeth I really loved? Is that the camp I really wanted to go to? Is that Percy I liked because he was so witty, not so smart and he was discovering himself, his strength and his inabilities. Now he is the YA hero who can do absolutely everything.I know book adaptations are very hard. The magic of the book will never meet the film. But they could add more side stories. Why does Luke hate Olympus? Why are the Gods ignorant? Why does Annabeth desperately want to go on the quest? Why does Grover want to search for the lost god Pan? Why does Annabeth like Luke so much? This would make the film more Interesting and less empty. Instead, we get so much Annabeth and Percy almost kissing scenes that it is embarrassing. Also, the mythologic side of the movie wasn't right. Gods are a bit arrogant, but not that arrogant what was shown in the movie. The world is a bit hidden. LET'S FIGHT A HYDRA AND LEAVE IT SO THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS Greek MYTHOLOGY IS REAL! LET'S ERUPT FROM THE SEA AND DO STUFF WHILE MORTALS ARE WATCHING. What? Also, Hades is the god of the Underworld, so let's make him the bad guy. Greek gods = good. Hades = bad. Kronos, who is that? Nah, don't introduce the main villain of the series, too much work. Also the tragic side isn't shown at all. Percy knew he would be unable to rescue the most valuable thing. So he knew the quest could be worthless. Also, not shown.Conclusion. When you adore the books, don't watch the movie. You will end up writing a whole rant on IMDb.com. If you didn't read the books, well, actually, you probably like it, but I suppose you didn't read this review because of the Spoiler tag. The special effects are actually great. I give one extra star for that. However, the story was empty, the acting was blank and the characters didn't develop at all. Also the villain was bad. A huggie from daddy and that whole movie didn't even happen at all. Lastly, the mythology wasn't used properly. It is just empty. The whole movie was empty. 2/10.
