A brilliant film that helped define a genre

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

All right, so I watched it, but only to see how it compared to the original.I didn't really want to see the harrowing first half, but knew I had to get through it to see the "vengeance is mine" driven 2nd part. To keep things short: yes, indeed, the character is brutalized, the actress gives it her all (think Ned Beatty in "Deliverance") and the camera spares us nothing. Now, onto the "good part", Katie's revenge. It's kind of a let down, to tell the truth. Not that the scenes aren't expertly filmed, acted and written. But in spite of the gruesome ferocity of the revenge killings, none of the have quite the squeal factor of the bathtub scene from the original (which really should have been the FINAL revenge in the original, instead of the second). And the character's vengeance themes are perhaps too literal to be even the least bit clever (for instance, after bad guy #3 tells Katie early on, "we all have our vices", he wakes up with his scrotum in a vice. Not funny, guys...not the least bit subtle.) On the other hand, the underground passage Katie makes on her initial journey to freedom takes on almost mythical qualities. And she sometimes looks like a demon-ness from Hell itself as she does various horrible things to her tormentors.I don't think there was ever any question that the cinematography on this film was going to be impressive. But the writing just misses the mark.

The makers obviously think that this film is about a girl who gets repeatedly raped and abused, only to get her own back on her attackers. What this film is really about is how even good people can experience things that will make them turn into monsters themselves; and make no mistake, this girl becomes a monster.Do these people deserve everything they get and more? A resounding yes. Did it make me happy to see them suffer as a consequences of their evil actions? No, not really; it made me very sad. Why?Because with every slash, we see more and more clearly that the person who began this film is gone forever, replaced by a psychotic monster hellbent on revenge. The ending - which I won't mention despite the spoiler tag - is presented as if it's supposed to be happy, but any idiot should be able to tell that this girl has done things she will never, ever be able to come back from. I honestly don't know whether it would have been kinder to kill her, rather than have her live the rest of her life as a monster who tortured and murdered people - even if these acts were well-deserved and the people 'had it coming' (they did, but that's not the point at all.)You see, vengeance and justice are two very different things; by pursuing the path of vengeance she is taking on the part of God, and in doing so condemning herself forever. People can recover from inflicted tragedy, but they can never recover from their own actions, which stay with them forever. In this film we see a girl become a monster, which is far more awful than anything inflicted on her up until that point. The saddest thing is that she chooses to become this way. You fully understand her choices, but you feel the tragedy of them nonetheless.

Revenge is best served cold, not rushed.I know what a lot of people are thinking right now, "Matt, why in the hell would you even watch this movie? and you hated the first movie, so why bother watching it and reviewing it?". That's a good question, because I don't know myself. I just watch a lot of things that are either good or bad, but with "I Spit on Your Grave 2" I knew off the bat that I was going to hate it, but for reasons of what brought myself into watching it sadly can't be answered, or maybe I'm just a fool for watching movies like this.Okay, all that aside now. So what did I honestly think of this movie, well I can start off by saying that I didn't like this movie at all, not because of it's absurd rape scenes or it's cartoonist torture scenes, but because it was really boring. Are main character goes out for revenge for those who kidnapped her, violently raped her and left her for dead, but the problem is that when she does get her revenge, I never felt satisfied and it was kinda rushed. I also found it kind of strange that she knows where they all are at the right time. The movie tries to be shocking and it fails at doing that.Overall I Spit on Your Grave 2 is freaking terrible and very dull to watch. It's basically a rehash of the first movie when you compare the two. The acting wasn't convincing, it isn't original, it's execution was poor and when Katie (Jemma Dallender), tries to act hard and scary when she goes on her revenge spree, it was very laughable at times.

My reviews are written under the assumption that the reader has already wisely passed up the opportunity to watch the movie "on the big screen" and is wondering whether they should pay for the rental or just wait for it to come out on whatever streaming service or premium channel they subscribe to.I'm on the fence about this one. If you're a fan of the series/franchise and/or you've made the mistake of watching the third installment which is total garbage despite having the original actress in it, then I say go ahead and pay for the rental. You will be entertained.Be warned however that this film seems to have been made with a downgraded camera. In some shots the camera is so shaky it looks like someone is making a home film similar to those detestable found footage films. I truly hate those movies. Seriously, Hollywood STOP MAKING FOUND FOOTAGE movies. THEY SUCK! We don't like them.Fortunately, this isn't one of those but the shooting is pretty awful in some scenes. You might want to take a dramamine before you watch. lol That said, I also want to add that there is in fact more abuse and it seems to go on forever. At one point, my husband wanted to skip to the revenge portion of the film because he felt like it was getting depressing to watch the protagonist's abuse, but I denied that request because I wanted to feel something for this character. I wanted to feel that her actions which are fairly heinous were justified. I've read a couple of reviews where the author claims to have not achieved this level of empathy for the character and while I'll agree that the actress has an annoying voice which does detract slightly from the feels, I personally, did start to feel empathy for her and was actually a little disappointed that she didn't torture her assailants a bit more. I realize that there are time constraints while filming, but it seemed as though her torture went on while theirs was relatively quick. Also, "mother" got off WAY too easy. One can only hope the cop eventually slammed the lid, locked the box, and left her there.Another reviewer chastised the film for painting Eastern Europeans in a negative light and made the assertion that this is because Americans are just dumb. The creator of the original 1978 film is from Palestine. He also co-produced the remake and the sequels. Trust me, the idea that Eastern Europeans are scumbags is a stereo- type believed by many.We don't all believe that, but as an American living in Europe who has also traveled to Eastern Europe and experienced the culture first hand, I can say that they didn't get the reputation for being the great do-gooders of the world for a legitimate reason. Theirs is a culture that is less than genteel and you are far more likely to encounter a scoundrel than an idealistic volunteer for the World Health Organization. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck ... At any rate, it's ridiculous to criticize a population of people just because you don't like the way another population of people is portrayed in a horror flick. It has literally nothing to do with the "watchability" of the film.Bottom line, pay for the rental if you're into the series. It IS entertaining. Do NOT, on the other, pay for the third installment. Wait for it to come out on the premiums or streaming services and only watch it if you're extremely bored. The third installment is THAT bad.
