Cowboys: Slim Pickin's Trailers

Cowboys trade lewd stories in the spirit of one-upmanship. Beer guzzling, bestiality and hellfire: it must be a Phil Mulloy cartoon.

Cowboys: Slim Pickin's (1991) ** 1/2 (out of 4) Coming after some rather adult entries in the series, this animated short from Phil Mulloy seems to belong to somewhere else. The story seems pretty simple as a bunch of cowboys appear to be nothing more than jerks wanting to steal land and make as much money as possible no matter what. The greed element is certainly a message being sent but I'm not completely sure how well it actually came across. The first two films in the series were rather dirty jokes and I thought both of them worked well with their limited stories. This one here didn't contain the big laughs and the story side of it just wasn't put forward in a way to where you could really get the message and run with it. Yes, we see that greed is bad but the way it's shown really wasn't anything overly special and the lack of laughs make the film passable but not much else.

Tonight, I watched many of the Cowboys shorts by Phil Mulloy. They are all very similar in that they feature black painted animation and it's very, very, very simple and not particularly attractive and lacks fluidity. Perhaps it was meant to look this way deliberately, but technically speaking this wasn't exactly a pretty film. The point of this film appears to be to say that the cowboys of the 19th century were all greedy jerks whose only real values were money and putting up fences to keep out the next guy. While I think there was a point to this, its very simplistic message didn't work completely. However, I did laugh once or twice at the film so it is better than some of the more "adult" installments of this short series.
