... View MoreIt’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
... View MoreThe tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
... View More"Cake" is just your standard romantic comedy but with a few elements better than expected, it's actually pretty good.Free-spirited Pippa (Heather Graham), a travel writer, takes a job at her dad's wedding magazine. Looks like her life is going to get put in order with men always just around the corner. The plot is tiresome, cliché, and completely predictable. But surprisingly, the dialogue is pretty good. With the right amount of clever comedy that can actually make you laugh, and sexy and romantic relationships, this romantic comedy is enjoyable. The charismatic Heather Graham makes it better than it otherwise would be, and a number of recognizable supporting actors (Taye Diggs, David Sutcliffe from "Gilmore Girls", Sarah Chalke from "Scrubs" and Sandra Oh from "Grey's Anatomy") keep you watching until their next scene."Cake" has a weak story that has been done before, but saved by witty dialogue, and charming and appealing actors, it's worth a look, especially since it's on TV frequently.
... View MoreI thought it was super cute, and an excellent movie. I can't wait until I get my next ($60, ugh) paycheck so I can buy it! SORRY, TOTAL SPOILER DON'T READ THE REST IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE.I would most definitely recommend this movie. It was so good. It was an adorable love story between two people who meet randomly and eventually fall in love and but the other one doesn't realize it.Ian was in love with her from the beginning but Pippa didn't fall in love until she thought it was too late.I really honestly thought this movie was just amazing and just such a great love story.I can't wait to buy it and watch it again. My absolute favorite quote is in this too.Pippa: You don't even know me! Ian: I don't know you? I know you don't get along with your father. I know that you miss your mother. I know what you look like when you kiss. and I know that you never date someone that matters to you. Pippa: You think you matter to me?Or something like that. I couldn't remember exactly and I was so very upset that this site didn't have quotes for this movie. But yeah I have that quote on my myspace and everything!Haha I love this movie. Everyone should totally watch it.
... View MoreWhen I analyze a romantic comedy,I try to be more fair than I usually am because I am conscious of the prejudice I have against that genre. My displeasure for those prefabricated sugary fantasies does not come from any bitterness or spite.I think it's just cynicism. My main objection about that genre is the manipulation of the woman and the typical cliché:every woman needs a man for being happy.Let's suppose that it is true in the majority of the cases:Is it necessary to preserve that fantasy on a so obvious way? Sure, from the romantic comedies from the 50's we have seen a lot of changes...women are not chained to the kitchen and they do not anxiously wait their husband when he comes very tired from working. On the modern romantic comedies, women are liberated, intelligent and owners of their destiny...but emotionally frail and lacking of intern stability...at least they catch the man of their dreams.I do not want this to seem as a hypocrite feminist manifest...after all,I am not a sexist.I simply do not think all that leads to making good cinema.I was filled with enthusiasm during the first half hour of Cake:in spite of being weakly written and disastrously directed,at least,it was focused on an unusual main character. So,the film started well, but then, the film falls in the typical formula and the final result is a crap.I do not recommend this movie to anybody. The screenplay is pathetic, the direction is disastrous and the characters do not provoke any interest.Heather Graham is charismatic and she gave some points to this poor movie. If the film would have taken the clichés for making something innovative, the film could have been fun.The only good points from this movie are Graham and the first half hour.I usually enjoy Canadian movies but the only thing Cake did was copying the clichés from almost all North American romantic comedies.
... View MoreAlthough I wouldn't vote this movie as Oscar worthy, I do think that because it's a chick-flick, it receives a bad rap. Pippa, a headstrong travel-writer is a sweet ingénue, and Heather Graham does a very good job of displaying Pippa's weaknesses and confusion. While yes, this movie does have a plot centralized around a wedding magazine, it also shows a slight sophistication with it's talk of gay marriage, and it's final climax has substance. And let's not forget David Sutcliffe as Ian...talk about beautiful. And in one special scene, the chemistry between Pippa and Ian is charge! Don't discount this movie because of it's cutesy title and seemingly silly plot. I guarantee a fun time while watching Cake!
