The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement is the sequel of The Princess Diaries. It has most of the cast return such as Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse and Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis together with Héctor Elizondo and Heather Matarazzo; as well as the director of the first film,Garry Marshall.Appearing for the first time in the franchise it Chris Pine,John Rhys-Davies and Callum Blue.In the sequel,Mia has become a full-fledge princess at Genovia. She is now to crowned as Queen but apparently she needs to get married first before it could happen. This is where things get complicated as she is engaged to someone whom she is not really attracted to and wants to become with someone she really is in love with. But in the end, everything predictably ends when Mia gets crowned and ends up with someone that she is truly in love with.It would have been better if Princess Diaries ended in the first film as there is nothing really to work with in the sequel. This would probably be for young girls but obviously marriage is something that many of them have not given a serious thought about it yet. While it was good to see Anne Hathaway once again as Mia,I felt that there is nothing more left as far as her character is concerned after the first film. But nevertheless,it was still clean and fun fairy tale as far as the sequel is concerned.

I saw this in the cinemas a few years ago and I have it on VHS which is recorded from RTE ONE. Princess Diaries II is the sequel to the 2001 movie of the same name. This time Mia who now lives in Genovia with her grandma(Julie Andrews) as a princess is celebrating her 21st birthday. But she is horrified when she discovers that she must find a man and get married otherwise she will lose her throne forever. A nobleman named Nicolas is smitten by her as he met her at the ball and his evil uncle wants to try and have his nephew as the new king of Genovia.Mia of course is in love with Andrew who is a Duke and she also likes Nicolas so who is her real true love??. A very predictable movie with a cute story added to it I really liked this one than the 1st one which was rather boring. Julie Andrews shows off her singing talent with Disney channel star Raven(aka Christina Pearlman)to a song called crowing glory. This was her first as she underwent throat surgery a few years ago. Anne Hathaway is charming as Mia and Chris Pine as the love interest is hot.8/10 for me and its a perfect film to watch in a lazy afternoon.

To be honest, movies at Christmas this year have been pretty poor. The few films I wanted to catch and haven't seen before, I've missed because I've either been shopping or sleeping! Whether it was out of sheer desperation or simply a lack of anything else on, I somehow watched this typically saccharine Disney chick-flick with an increasing sense of disbelief. I confess, I've not watched the first film but if this is representative then my ignorance will remain intact. But please bear in mind that this is a film for young girls and I am neither. To recap, Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) was a slightly awkward teenage high school student who is whisked away to the tiny European nation of Genovia by Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews) who informs her that she is the heir to her throne. With her best friend Lilly Moscovitz (Heather Matarazzo) in tow, she now lives full-time in Genovia but her cosy princess lifestyle is about to be disrupted. Informed that she must marry before taking the throne, she finds herself being suited to an English duke (Callum Blue) - much to the chagrin of the villainous Viscount Mabrey (John Rhys-Davies) and his son (Chris Pine), who is quite smitten with Mia himself.I know that most viewers of this film will find it an amusing, harmless comedy about a fish out of water and to be frank, there are some positives. Hathaway's performance is only topped by Andrews as the Queen but most other actors are either having fun (Raven-Symoné) or paying the bills (Hector Elizondo). The comedy might not be top-drawer but enough to raise a faint smirk - the archery scene in particular works quite well. But this film is as bright, cheery and fake as an air hostess' smile and it's actually quite amusing to see what an American's idea of Europe is, via Genovia and its customs. My favourite is the bitchy Scottish reporter (Kim Thomson) decked head-to-toe in tartan in case there was any doubt as to her ancestry - you won't know from her accent! There is some mild enjoyment to be had assuming you aren't the target audience and if you are then this will be right up your street regardless of what I write here.In truth, there is only one reason why anyone would watch this film and that is to see Julie Andrews singing again which is cause for celebration. But personally, that is the only reason I would watch this again. It's not especially funny, intelligent, well acted, surprising or even entertaining but like I keep saying, this movie isn't meant for me. It simply struck me as being a light, throwaway chick flick and that is exactly what this is. If that's what you want then this will fit the bill just fine. As for me, I guess I'll just keep flicking through the channels or start watching those DVDs I got for Christmas...

This movie is probably one of the worst i've seen all year...Except for having one of the most predicable and uninteresting story lines of any movie i've ever seen, it gives me chills to think, that this is actually what some, and after the making of this movie even more, people think that life in Europe is like. More than that though this movie is also pretty much a commercial for abolishing monarchy, in that it portrays the system and its supporters as either idiotic or evil, While I personally don't really care as long as a system of government has freedom guaranteed for it's citizens, this movie says to me that its a bad system as long as its not the one the Americans use.And While I realize this is a movie and should be regarded as such, a fictional story, I find it to be too close to reality to not be closer lest it be an open insult to anyone who ever took a European history or politics course. You can hate me for saying so but that is what i feel.
