After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.

There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.

Gotham by gaslight is an example of good comic book adaptation. But it also butchered it's good characters . It's interesting they changed the climax as in original gordon was not the ripper. But they wasted so many good characters like lelsie thompson , the robins ,dr hugo strange , harvey dent , poision ivy etc . But although it's a good spring movie you could watch .

I have a bad vision from up close when I forget my glasses, so I couldn't read the resume on the back when I rented it at the club, so I have to rely on the sleeve. I tought this would be not again about Jack the Ripper, but rather a steampunk re-design of the Batman universe. It was much more mainstream than that. The characters' design and voices were okay, but the backgrounds lacked in grandeur and oppression, and had too much colours, except the ones in the asylum which were nearer to the right tone. The filmakers obviously saw in this story a one-shot rather than a serie, and as such their work was directed towards the Batman fan first, and the Victorian/Steampunk fan second - Jack the Ripper being the era's most obvious story. In that sense it's a hit-and-miss - There was so much possibilities in there... IMO if they had given this to a real steampunk author, it would have been better. But still, it's indeed an interesting little piece, if merely for the potential.

This is a poor attempt to paste Batman and his supporting characters onto something else. The characters are cardboard, the story unappealing, the voice acting uninspired. Unimaginative people keep pulling the Batman (and really the entire DC universe) thinner and thinner. What if Batman were a vampire? What if Superman were Russian? What if - we removed the heart of every DC character? That's what it really comes down to - removing the hearts of characters because poor story tellers want jobs telling stories.

How much you like this film will definitely depend on how much you are into the Victorian/Steampunk aesthetic, as well as the murder mystery genre in general. There is definitely nothing bad to report about this movie, it is a decent little crime noir set in the early 1900s.If there is a problem it is that it has no connection to the greater Batman/DC animated universe and could easily not be a Batman film at all, since outside of the character names themselves there is little to link the two. Batman only vaguely 'Batmans' outside of some grappling-hook action and minor detecting. It is certainly not one for those who like outlandish superhero action.Overall if you see this as a short murder mystery there is little to be disappointed by here, and if you crave a more down-to-earth Batman then this will be great for you. In my opinion you might as well just watch something like Zorro or Lone Ranger, or any other masked vigilante that Batman was based on as for me its 'back to basics' tone is just a little too basic, but it is certainly a matter of personal opinion in this regard.
