I gave it a 7.5 out of 10
... View MoreIt isn't all that great, actually. Really cheesy and very predicable of how certain scenes are gonna turn play out. However, I guess that's the charm of it all, because I would consider this one of my guilty pleasures.
... View MoreBlending excellent reporting and strong storytelling, this is a disturbing film truly stranger than fiction
... View MoreIt's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
... View MoreSome rare stories don't lose their appeal no matter how old they get. One of these is the Nibelungelied, which is also called the national epic of the Germans. It was written in the 13th century, but it is much older. This movie states to portray it, but it doesn't. First of the Nibelungenlied has two parts and this movie is only about the more popular first part. Other than that there are some really major differences between the original story and the movie, for example considering the ending. But still you could put that to the freedom of arts. The Nibelungenlied is probably just one version of the story. It exists in a different form in the Scandinavian mythology, so there is not just one way to tell the story. But what really angers me is that the movie tells a very one dimensional story. Siegfried is all around good and Hagen is all around bad. These two characters are one if not the main attraction of the story, and it is just not like that. Hagen is not just this evil selfish person. He is extremely loyal and a great warrior, what the movie doesn't get at all. And Siegfried is not entirely good in the original story. For example he wants to gain the crown of Burgund when he first comes there. A story like this wouldn't have survived the ages if it was as one dimensional as this movie. Other than that the movie doesn't give you the feeling of watching an epic story, as it should. The music and the language are unappropriate in my opinion. The material for this movie is great, because its based on one of the greatest stories ever told. But the movie doesn't leave any room for interpretation and tells the whole story very one sided. Some actors don't really fit their roles. Siegfried who is supposedly a tall blond hero, is portrayed by a dark haired Benno Führmann who isn't even 6 feet tall. The movie just never gets as epic as the story. 3 stars for good material badly formed. I hope the movie will be redone without Hollywood involved.
... View MoreI am truly amazed at how little publicity this film has received in the background of attention that has been directed towards the Lord of the Rings trilogy in recent years. The casting and acting is absolutely superb and there is not one character that is under-represented in any fashion. The movie begins with very strong undertones and tells the story of a young boy having to grow up quite suddenly in a world of nobility entangled with treachery, deceit and ulterior motives. This movie has something for everyone, expertly combining plenty of action, fantasy and magic with excellent story telling, romance, humor and revenge. You'll be a "tough nut to crack" if you are disappointed by this masterpiece which unfolds superbly throughout it's 164 minutes of length (yes, that's right, just over two and half hours that flies by without even realizing). Do not miss out on this!!
... View MoreThe blacksmith Siegfried (Benno Fürmann) meets the Queen of Island Brunhild (Kristanna Loken) in the crater of a fallen meteoroid and defeats her in an ax battle. They fall in love for each other and Kriemhild promises to wait for him in her kingdom. Siefried forges a sword using the strange ore; he slays a dragon and baths in its blood to become invincible and wealthy with the Treasure of the Nibelungen. Then he fights and defeats the dwarf Alberich (Sean Riggs) from the Realm of the Nibelungen and gets his magic helmet that makes the user take whatever form he wishes. When Siegfried meets Kriemhild (Alicia Witt), she drops a magic love potion in his wine and he immediately falls in love for her and forgets Brunhild. When Siegfried asks the hand of Kriemhild to her brother King of Burgundy Gunther (Samuel West), he advises that he would accept if Siegfried helps him to win the strong Queen of Iceland Brunhild. Siegfried uses his helmet to defeat Brunhild pretending that he is Gunther and Brunhild accepts to marry him. When the jealous Kriemhild discloses the truth to Brunhild, she leads Siegfried and her kingdom to a tragedy. The saga of Siegfried is certainly one of the most beautiful tales of the old times of pagan gods. In 1924, Fritz Lang released the masterpiece "Die Nibelungen: Siegfried", an impressive movie ahead of time and one of the most beautiful fantasies ever. The made for TV "Ring of the Nibelungs" was a great surprise for me, since it is another wonderful version of the saga of Sirgfried. The story is engaging, developed in a perfect pace and using decent special effects. The cast has great performances, and includes the gorgeous Alicia Witt and Kristanna Loken in the role of the sweet Kriemhild and the strong Brunhild. In the end, this delightful movie is not so powerful as Fritz Lang's masterpiece, but it is a great family entertainment. My vote is eight.Title (Brazil): "A Maldição do Anel" ("The Curse of the Ring")
... View MoreI actually watched this movie in the last week of January 2008 and couldn't help falling for it. k. Loken has proved further her earlier performances were no fluke. I particularly liked the manner in which she stuck to her man. the dragon fight- impressive as well as realistic(actually I kind of forgot I was watching a movie and couldn't help kicking out in the course of watching it). I have to be honest with every one and my eight-star rating is good enough, at least. The fights were well executed, overall, it was quite entertaining. Actually non of my anti-adventure movie friends had any negative comments for this film. the locations chosen for this movie really, really fit in with the background of the story. in other words, the scenes somehow manage to appear quite real- I commend the film makers for that. you will have no regrets watching this movie, especially as a lover of adventure and of K.Loken's performances.
