While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.

I too (like most of the people reviewing this title) am a fan of vampire movies, books, television series. Compared to what's going on with True Blood lately, I wish they would bring a version of this series back! (Just for the record, I really, really heartily dislike The Vampire Diaries--blah, so sick of teenage vampires and all the idiotic drama behind those shows. While Buffy was about a teenage vampire hunter, she was allowed to grow up and change and the vampire characters also progressed..guess the morale here is that if you become a vamp as an adolescent you never change from being a self involved idiot) The current fave, True Blood, has gone off on so many opposing and off the wall story lines and crazy stuff like fairies and wolf babies that the main plot and characters have become far too outrageous. Moonlight is more believable, the characters more likable, and the story arc as real as I suppose any series about mythical creatures can be. While Moonlight was left at a point where it could have gone for a few more seasons with some interesting twists (ie. the District Attorney being sent the names of all the L.A. vamps, along with a mysterious phone call but no explanation why), at least they left it with the two main characters, the vampire Mick and the reporter/investigator Beth, finally getting together. It would have been fun to see what happened. I read somewhere that though the ratings were good, and it was building a strong fan base, the network did not think it would last or go anywhere -- maybe it was because it was a post-Buffy and pre-Twilight show and they didn't see it able to compete with something as good as Buffy and/or had no idea the whole vampire genre was about to take off again. Anyway, watched it after being home sick and watching the entire Buffy series, most of which I had missed when it was on, and I am really impressed with this show. Would love to have found more seasons of this, but oh well, it's a fun series to watch if you like the genre, and while the final episode isn't exactly closure we are not left with too many cliffhangers. Give it a watch if you have the time someday, it's worth it :)

I must say that "Moonlight" was absolutely a new kind of experience of horror, drama, crime and romance for me. The series were unique in a way, because it was not based upon some horror book, for example "True Blood" or "Twilight", it was straight to TV script with some new vampire myths changed. In the first few episodes, the script was pretty ordinary, conventional, just like the story, when it comes to crime genre. Drama and romance were the real key here, the strong chemistry between two leading characters, the horror (vampires) were here to show something different. OK, now... It do reminds of "Angel", or "Kindred" in a way... but not that much. Simply because leading character craves for life and sunlight again. Well, that's one reference...Now, what makes this show pretty good is characters. Mick St. John (here played by Alex O'Loughlin) is a 50 year old vampire detective who uses his superhuman vampire abilities to solve the cases. Well, that's cool. O'Loughlin was pretty good as Mick (we don't get too much vampires with that kind of names), his performance was somewhat OK, but flat. He is cool to the audiences (especially girls) only because he is handsome in a human form. As a vampire, he is great. Beth Turner (always sweet and adorable Sophia Myles), a internet reporter who fells in love with Mick, but he refuses her love just because he is a vampire. Now, that's the sweetest and most attractive thing about this series, the "impossible" bond between vampire and human, he is also in love with her, but... he is also afraid for her. But... nothing's impossible... you get the point. Josef Kostan (Jason Dohring), is a 400 year old vampire and Mick's best friend. A playboy and a tycoon, he is a comic relief in a way, but honestly if I get to chose between him and Eric Northman, I'd choose Josef. He's cool, maybe because he is more of a human than a vampire and he is really funny. Coraline (smoking hot and sexy Shannyn Sossamon), Mick's sire and ex-wife, one of the key characters in the series. The other actors Tami Roman, Jordan Belfi and Brian White were good, to mention guest appearance Holly Valance in one episode, as a sexy vampiress, that was hot! Now, the things we all like about "Moonlight" are Mick and Beth. I have never seen such strong chemistry between characters, maybe except in Commando (1985), between John Matrix (Schwarzzenegger) and Bennett (Vernon Wells) OK kidding :) no matter characters were rivals, or lovers, there was definitively a chemistry. But, in "Moonlight", you just adore that chemistry and you're constantly asking yourself, "when", "when he is going to kiss her?", "when we are get to see these two lovebirds in a big hug?", I asked that myself, it is very emotional. You know, he is so charming, dark, tall and she is cute and adorable and brave, that just... it goes together! That's why everybody loves this show. Than we don't need vampires, we need humans! Mick and Beth... and be done with it. But, vampires suits good in this show... just for little bit difference. Now, the things that are irritates me, but not that much... just to name a few. I like vampire myths and legends and I follow all those things. I saw a lot of vampire films and TV series. And to say this... Some of mythological references are changed here, and that's what is making me angry. Stakes can't kill a vampire, only paralyzes him, that sucks if you ask me... the sun can't kill a vampire, it only makes him extremely weak, well, OK, I can leave this fact alone, because in Bram Stoker's Dracula, a leading vampire can walk on the sun, but his powers are weak, and I don't mind that. Crucifixes and holy water are useless, well Dracula is the only one feared of those things. I think this is because of modern time, you know, religion is weakening, no one believes in God anymore... and that's why crosses are not working... Modern times... And of course for the end... Mick himself... Mick is a vampire who craves to be human again. A real vampire would never turn back to his human life again, instead he would rather find a way to survive, that's what is spoiling this image of Mick, he fells sorry for what he has done in the past... no vampire is ever sorry! That's dumb. By the myth, when you are a vampire you don't give a rat's pink rectum about anything! In short, Mick is too much human! But, still OK... And did i just said... real vampire? I must be nuts! Vampires are not real! :) that's just my opinion of vampires.I highly recommend this TV series to all people, especially those who are in love, love couples, you know, they'll love it! You'll beg yourself to CBS to make a second season. The show was canceled because of strike... bulls!!t! The show was canceled because people would like it too much! And media loves to pull people's leg all the time! JUST LIKE FIREFLY TV SERIES! Those were great! Watch this and enjoy!

it was a good show, only thing the actress playing Beth is a really bad choice. she looks like a milkmaid compare to Coraline. and the sexy Mick is supposed to choose her over his ex-wife? hard to believe.By the way, it looks like Sophia Myles put an end to Spooks just as well.i don't understand why she is still around TV, no face & no talent what so ever.it was a good show, only thing the actress playing Beth is a really bad choice. she looks like a milkmaid compare to Coraline. and the sexy Mick is supposed to choose her over his ex-wife? hard to believe.By the way, it looks like Sophia Myles put an end to Spooks just as well.i don't understand why she is still around TV, no face & no talent what so ever.

Really enjoyed this series, thought that the first episode or two was a little bit stilted but after this you could see that the actors were getting comfortable with their characters. What a shame that there was only one series. I think that the storyline was good and there was a lot of content that could of gone on into future series and I think given a little more time this could have become a cult series. Any chance it could be considered again. I am nearly fifty years old and my daughter is twelve and we were both equally disappointed that there were no more episodes to view. I especially enjoyed the complexities of human/vampire relationships and the contrast between the vampire friends, mick st john and josef.
