I just got done watching all three seasons and I have to admit that I really enjoyed this series. Yes, there are a lot of recycles tropes and plot devices, but they do a few things that really work for me. First of all, the universe isn't spoon fed to the audience. Instead of having some narration or excessive exposition, the writers reveal this new world to the audience through regular dialog and context. The story is pieced together from ideas that have already been used, but it all comes together fairly well thanks to a decently balanced plot and decent acting. They really flush out each separate culture and main character fairly well and the conflicts don't feel too forced. The CG was okay for what it is. I'm judging this as a made for SyFy series. I don't go into a show like this expecting Steven Spielberg.

This review contains spoilers, you have been warned.I think is only fair that this series got canceled, writers made many logical mistakes in the first joint 2 episodes of season 3 and throughout the series, the heroes skin alive a small patch from a doctor, already scared to death, that was perfectly capable of curing the barbaric woman, the hero calling her sweetheart after she put a 2 feet iron bar through the head of a boy, giving up to the demands of a terrorist barbaric father when they outnumbered and outgunned him? just WTF those writers were thinking? were they on drugs or drunk? Also the "good people" threatened to kill the doctor if she didn't cured the primitive woman, instead of comfort her saying that they needed her cured to save the town or why not threaten to arrest the father if he didn't behave. The writers dropped the ball clearly and the series and the viewers suffered; nobody saw this was crap writing? unbelievable!

I watched all three seasons of Defiance and I liked all of them. The story is nothing we haven't seen before, but so what? Meanwhile it is difficult to make up new stories, because there are no real new stories. So in the end, it's all in the delivery, the fun of the retelling. And having said that, I think Defiance did a good job with the retelling. In my opinion the created characters were quite interesting. OK, at first all appeared to be too much cliché, but the writers still managed to add an extraordinary twist to almost all of them and to their story. Each character was well developed and multi-layered. They were not one dimensional, all good or all bad, but did portray positive and negative traits. In a way the show reminded me a bit of Farscape (no wonder since Rockne S. O'Bannon was the creator of this show, too). A lot of effort was put into the portrayal of the various cultures with their own music, rituals, prayers, languages, religions, prejudices, and personality tendencies. Another similarity to Farsacpe is, that Defiance too is a show about values. Love can overcome differences and cooperation produces better results than confrontation. That was the main reason why it was fun for me to watch the show.

This show depicts a world in which there are a variety of different species, however these species can easily be interchanged with races. The 'humans' can be seen as Native Americans, they're native to earth, and other species attempt to take over their land. The Castithan are the most racist against other species, most likely white, and then you have the Omek (of course there's other races, however it's irrelevant). The Omek are often depicted by African American actors, and these characters are seen as barbaric monsters who everyone should be in fear of -- sound familiar? This show simply recreates our world as it already exists, however instead of using just one species -- the human race, they add a little twist to it, incorporating other species as well.
