This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.

After various disappointing adaptations of this Agatha Christie mystery, the Lifetime network finally delivered the goods and did justice to the source material. With a cast compromised of known actors like Sam Neill, Noah Taylor, Charles Dance and Miranda Richardson as well as lesser known actors like Maeve Dermody and Aidan Turner among others in one of the greatest mystery stories in literary history, tension is rife throughout with nail- biting chemistry between the actors. While every actor is terrific, the major standout is Maeve Dermody as Vera Claythorne, the most anxious member of the island-goers. Dermody does not go over the top like her predecessors instead the actress remains as subdued as possible only going into a scream queen moment once or twice. Her chemistry with Aidan Turner as Philip Lombard is more profound than the novel's allusions to their mutual attraction and also displays a firm chemistry with Miranda Richardson's Emily Brent. The script is straightforward as the miniseries follows Agatha Christie's novel nearly verbatim. Minor changes are scattered in the series like the death of Sam Neill's General MacArthur (so far this is only time the character's original name has been used in an adaptation) when he is killed by a crossbow and not bludgeoned to death like the novel, Emily Brent is actually killed with a knitting needle and not drugged like the novel (this method is more fitting considering the story's poem) and the end has a small alteration but ends the same way as the book did. If you want thrills and chills, give this miniseries a viewing and skip the previous movie incarnations.

This has an excellent cast and production values but we gave up twenty minutes because it is so relentlessly grim and dark. Dread prevails, and a non-stop dirge thrums in the background. Very heavy-handed. The old 40's classic version is fun albeit rather dated, but it had wonderful atmosphere & fascination without the sense of dreadful, suicidal depression and nightmarish creepiness hanging over all - as this new version does. I don't think that Agatha Christie would have been pleased. The current taste is for shows to be utterly dark, with an emphasis on dank despair - and this is totally in that vein. If that is what you savor, this may be just your dish. Beware.

I did not enjoy this mini series. The first part was alright. Intriguing plot, good actors, good mystery, slightly spooky but that's kind of the point.Fast forward to the second installment which just plummeted. I found it unnecessarily gory and all the characters were just sick people. Not one of them was redeemable. Well, maybe the one played by Aidan Turner (his name escapes me, actually all of their names escape me because it is a memory I am trying to repress) simply because he's played by Aidan Turner. But all of the characters are just sick murderers. Sure the twist may have been a good one and I actually didn't see it coming but it still ended terribly. They all died in end making it feel like a complete waste of time. Frankly I hated it and I wish I hadn't watched it. I realise that there are other people who enjoy this sort of thing and that's good for them but I definitely do not. To be fair maybe I should have researched Agatha Cristie before watching this.

Great adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel.August 1939. Ten people find themselves on Soldiers Island, off the Devon coast. They have been invited there or hired to work there by Mr and Mrs Owen. The Owens are nowhere to be found. At dinner on the first evening a recording announces that they all all murderers, lists their victims, and says that they have been sentenced to death. Then, somebody starts murdering them, one by one...A very well thought out and well made adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel. Dark, intriguing and very intense. The tension is ramped up well as the series progresses.Good use of flashbacks to give the characters' backgrounds and show their crimes.Good performances from a cast that is a mix of stars - Charles Dance, Sam Niell, Miranda Richardson, semi-stars - Noah Taylor, Toby Stephens (of Black Sails fame) and stars-to-be - Maeve Dermody, Aidan Turner. Good work all round.
