Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

Interesting that so many people are comparing this unfavorably to "Lost". I actually hated "Lost"… well, past the third or fourth episode, anyway, when it started collapsing under its own weight and stopped making any kind of sense at all. "Alcatraz", I liked… I already knew it had been canceled and wouldn't have an ending when I started streaming episodes, like with "Carnivale", but it was good enough that I knew I really wanted to see as much of it as was ever going to exist. Generally the supernatural and/or JJ Abrams isn't my cup of tea, but I thought this show was extremely well done. The cast is top-notch and the premise really grips the viewer. I'm sorry they never got a chance to wrap it up.

But the show does depend too much on it. And the mystery surrounding Alcatraz (and the fantasy element they created around that infamous prison) is really something worth while. But it cannot hold its own, if you don't have interesting characters. And that begins with the main actors. While Sam Neils character has a bit of a mystique (there could be more, but still) and Jorge Garcias is the nerd/bookworm with a good sense of humor (although that only helps to a certain degree), our main actress does struggle. And it's not really her fault, which you can guess, because of the underwritten character she has to portray. But if you needed confirmation, watch the Outtakes and you can see that there is charisma to her persona, something that cannot be said about her character at all. It seems to tick all the right boxes (mystery, comedy and others), but there is no depth to it all.Having said that, the show is still enjoyable to a degree, had built itself that it could run a couple of seasons, but was axed after one. There are shows, I'm actually really sorry they got canceled, this one I might have continued watching, but only because it's not that bad

It could had been a great series but is full of mistakes, bad sponsor placement and clichés. The errors between scenes are a special case: there are no continuity: keys change case and placement, mobiles change from horizontal to vertical, actors move all around, same car appears over and over in action scenes, etc, etc... The idea is great but it is executed as a "B" series from 80's. My question is simple: today, with so many good professionals, equipment, technology, technique and experience available in the market, how it goes to air with so many mistakes? Ah, Special effects are another joke too.Otherwise it's OK.

I never wrote any kind of review, but after watching every episode of Alcatraz, I couldn't help myself."Alcatraz prison was allegedly shut down in 1963 due to unsafe conditions, its prisoners and staff transferred. However, both the prisoners and guards really disappeared and begin to reappear in present-day San Francisco with a new dangerous agenda and only 4 people in an agency can track them down."This is the main idea of the Alcatraz, which is funny and also stupid, why is that? well the main lead is Emerson Hauser, who recruits an FBI agent, Rebecca Madsen (which miscast) to work with them on such important matter. Then they (only 3 of them) start working on their first case, and somehow Rebecca decides to get help from a comic book writer who wrote a book about Alcatraz!!! they get along and solved the case and Hauser says to Rebecca: "You need a partner, you want him?" you kidding me? seriously?anyway the prisoners keep coming back to present and do the exact same crime as they have done 50 years ago, using same patterns and even the same number of victim! The other funny thing here is that how they get their clues to get an arrest, well, let me explain it to you: "They have a super smart computer with a super Data-base which knows everything and functions like a charm", like they have a 50 years old photo of 2 people standing in front of a door, then they give it to the system and whoa, they have the address. how it works? well as I'm a programmer let me explain it to you,the software compare the architecture type of the building with 50 years ago neighborhood and gives you the address.another example, someone somewhere upload a video in a website, suddenly the browser came up on screen playing the video! another funny thing is Dr.Sodo is a comic book writer, he uses their software like he has a PhD in IT.and everything they wanna do like zoom on a picture, compare with data- base and lots of other super cool things works with an Enter on keyboard. on the last episode of season 1, when Rebecca wants to arrest Tommy Madsen, he was on the ground she says "Get up!!!!" and then he stabs her with a knife etc. but in all other arrests she says "Get on the ground and then handcuffs the suspect".basically they ruined the idea with such story lines and absolute lack of logic.
