That was an excellent one.

... View MoreBajo La Misma Luna, Patricia Riggen, 2007, MexicoBajo la Misma Luna uses a lot of realistic events to tell a story of how most people from the other side of the border struggle. Bajo La Misma Luna (Under the Same Moon). Is a great film that depicts the constant struggles of millions of people that cross over the border to search for a better living. There are thousands of women that cross the border each day in order to provide for their families, in doing so many of them leave young children behind. It is a sad but true reality; they come here leaving everything in order to obtain a little something for their families. This movie tells a story of a boy who crosses the border in search of his mother. Certain term of events occurs and Carlitos (Adrian Alonso) is forced to go in search of his mother. On the other side Rosario (Kate Del Castillo) also finds herself with the struggles that occur to most Illegal immigrants when they cross the border. This movie focuses on the harsh reality of many of the challenges that immigrant face when they come to the United States. This movie tells a parallel story of both Rosario and Carlitos. Rosario lives in the United States and has been gone for a while. Carlitos has stayed back with his grandmother waiting on the arrival of his mother. Rosario works as a nanny and a housekeeper in the city of Los Angeles. While Carlitos works a little side job in Mexico with a women who organizes illegal immigration for people on the other side. Rosario calls him every Sunday at ten o'clock sharply. He awaits her call faithfully every week. Rosario vividly describes her location to him and this is something that he engraves in his memory hoping to one day see it himself. In Carlitos life a tragedy occurs, his grandmother passes away and he sets out on a journey to travel to the United states and find her before her call the following Sunday. On his way he is faced with many of the similar struggles that most people encounter while crossing the border. He is first met up with a couple that he pays off to smuggle him across the border and then has to hitchhike himself in order to reach his destination. In some situations he comes across danger and other times he is lucky. On the other side is his mother who also finds herself struggling with coming back home or staying and being able to provide for her family. She encounters Paco who has his green card and considers marrying him in order to get her papers and bring her son, but doubts herself in making this choice. She also struggles with her employer who is constantly treating her bad and who she cannot call the cops on because of her illegal status and fear of deportation. One of the scenes in the movie that shows one of the many struggles and dangers that people face while on their journey to America is when Carlitos is almost sold to traffickers this is one of the harsh realities that many children encounter in Mexico. Rosario also is faced with struggles of her own when the lady she works with does not pay her what she is owed and reminds her that she cannot do anything about it because she is an illegal. Another one of my favorite scene was the last scene. On one of Carlitos missions he encounters a migrant worker who is played by Eugenio Derbez. Derbez tries to get rid of the boy, but ends up forming a bond with him. It is that bond that saves him at the end of the movie. I also really enjoyed the part when they both singing in the restaurant it reminds me a lot of my culture and how much music is a big part of it. In conclusion I thought the film was great. It showed many of the struggles that immigrant often encounter and also tells a wonderful story of the willingness to never give up and fight until you reached your goal. It shows us a parallel story of the two main characters and also shows the good and bad things that many illegals can face while on their journey to the land of dreams. I thought the film was very heartfelt and it should have earned more credit than it did.
... View MoreUnder the Same Moon is quite a compelling and interesting story. The movie is about Carlitos's adventure across the Mexican border to venture to Los Angeles, California to reunite with his mother, Rosario for the first time in four years. The story shows the many hardships that Carlitos's had to endure, but in the end his never ending perseverance pulled through. Under the Same Moon does a wonderful job of enlightening the viewers on the hardships illegal immigrants face upon crossing the border and once across. It also shows how far a little kindness can bring you. Carlitos's journey is an interesting one to witness blossom. His journey crosses paths with many people, primarily Enrique. He bonds with Enrique, who later realizes the importance of the journey to Carlitos and acts courageously in standing up for Carlitos. The movie has many hidden messages and themes throughout the movie that appeal to the viewer's ethos and pathos. The movie follows its theme of the challenges of crossing the border, whether it is a physical or emotional border. It challenges the viewers to understand what life is like for an illegal immigrant and it is quite eye-opening. The movie was all-in-all a strong and passionate movie with a strong supporting story. I would have to rate it an 8/10.
... View MoreUnder The Same Moon is a thoughtful and heartwarming story which describes the struggles of a young boy, Carlito , in his quest to cross the Mexican American border and find his mother. The movie highlights the struggles of crossing the border and the turmoil that illegal immigrants face while living in the United States. In some of the scenes the director explores how hard it is for an illegal immigrant to hold a steady job and then find a new job. Additionally, there are examples of how some illegal immigrants go through the process of becoming legal residents through marriage. The movie was effective in depicting the plight of illegal immigrants while simultaneously highlighting the concerns over treatment in regards to illegal immigrants. The border patrol and authorities were highly abusive in the movie towards illegal immigrants which is not necessarily an appropriate response for treating illegals. However presenting such a view of illegal immigrants is important for viewers to truly understand the dangers that illegal immigrants face. Luckily for viewers the movie had a positive outcome where Carlito was reunited with his mother. While such a ending is important for hope, the movie fails to acknowledge all the scenarios where such a positive outcome does not work out. In many cases those who successfully cross the border are caught and then deported. Overall, the movie was at 7.0 out of 10. The story was inspirational and enlightening however was not completely informative in regards to illegal immigration.
... View MoreUnder the Same Moon was good movie that showed the negative side of what happens to Mexican immigrants that cross the border. I enjoyed watching the protagonist's Carlitos journey on crossing the border from Mexico to Los Angele, California to be with his mother. However, it was skeptical and unrealistic that although he was a smart kid that a nine year old could successfully makes it across the border by himself with a few resources. The story carries well with a subject as emotional as illegal immigration, utilizing a theme of abandonment, the movie explains what it means to truly care for and cherish a child and a mother. Under the Same Moon is full of joy, sadness and possesses a symbolic ending. Personally, I enjoyed this movie because of what it entails, although the overall concept did not make some sense it is nice to see a happy ending for such an act that usually would not have a positive ending. I would recommend this movie to anyone wants to see the acts of the American INS against illegal immigrants and those who are tired of seeing and hearing about horrible endings to those just trying to make a better life for themselves and their families.
