It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.

The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.

It was quite a very sad film, I felt so sorry for Bree that she wasn't accepted by her family in the first place and having realised she had a troubled son. I understand that Toby was angry at his dad for not telling him the truth about why she got him out of jail but he had no right to punch her. I would absolutely shake him to hell in order for him to wake up because she was his dad after all! This movie really does a good intake of being a transsexual and how you deal with it. The character Bree in my opinion really did a good example of herself on showing off and being brave who she truly is! She really doesn't stand any messing! I honestly wish herself and that singing cowboy Calvin were together. I mean, they literally locked eyes when they first met and even when they had said goodbye, they looked inseparable together! Now why no happily there? It's a good movie I have to admit regardless!

I always laugh and cry through this movie, it is a great story, with universal themes, and a lot of layered meaning and humor. It is pretty real, and I feel for Bree because I am also a woman of transsexual experience, and I've been through a lot of what she goes through as part of transition. Changing sex is one of the most difficult (and risky) things a human being can do - a bit like climbing Everest without the glory (that's why the bath-scene is *so poignant* and *important*). So many scenes ring true to my experience. If you pay close attention, you will see and hear some of the "secret" humor we trans woman share among ourselves...humor helps us as we pay our "trans dues."Blessings & Joy!!Renee

11103829 The director of this film, Duncan Tucker, stated that he wanted a female actress to play the role of Bree, a character who is a transsexual woman, because it would allow Bree to become the woman she wants to be. Felicity Huffman was cast in this role, and although she did an incredible job, I don't think the choice of a biological female was necessary to give the character Bree the life she always wanted. In my opinion, Tucker's statement contrasts the important message this film gives, which is to find oneself, and oneself can be in any gender, sex, identity or expression. Bree became the woman she wanted to be in the end, but it would have been achieved regardless of the actor's biological sex. I also think that the choice to have a female cast in the role shows that gender is and can be a performance, and that anyone can create a new or different identity for themselves. The fact that Huffman is a female that plays a transsexual woman who was previously a man, connects the goal of the film and can work in many different ways. Huffman's deeper voice and exaggerated feminine mannerisms gave a realistic performance of a transsexual woman, which shows that gender is a performance and something that is constructed. Performance can be learned and put to use for individuals trying to transition to the opposite sex. This film was well done and successfully showed a realistic story of a transsexual woman, and the struggles that many transsexual women may go through. I did wish to see a transsexual woman in the role, because it would provide the opportunity for a transsexual woman to have a lead role, and possibly become a more widely known actor

11096377 I watched this movie in a Human Sexuality class, as we were discussing the topic of trans gender individuals. I enjoyed this movie because it allows an individual an insight to how many issues that trans gender people face in reality. One main issue that I thought was interesting was the fact that Bree did not want to tell Toby, her son, that she was the father of him. When Toby was explaining how his father was to Bree he showed a picture, which was of Bree when she was male, and she lost her feminine characteristics at the time as if she was disgusted by the way she used to be as a male. Also while on a road trip, Bree stops to stay at her friend's place where there just so happens to be a "trans gender cruise planning party", Toby gets introduced to many of Bree's trans gender friends. Bree does not want them to tell Toby that she too is indeed a trans gender because she is scared of what Toby might think. Afterwards Toby tells Bree he thought all the people were nice, which changes Bree's opinion and she opens up more to Toby. She did not tell Toby the truth about being the father until a night at her parent's home. I think Toby should not view Bree any different than he did originally whether she is male or female; Bree is still the only parental figure in his life and he should be grateful for that although her gender identity has changed throughout the years, she is still the same person.
