Too much of everything

Must See Movie...

It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.

After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.

It's difficult to not give 'Top Gun' the narrowest of 'recommends' for its style, awe of the fighter jet spectacle, blistering sound design and great score. The audience will become spatially disoriented but the fighter pilot lives in a world of 360-degree turns and the movie gives us a good secondhand sense of what it might be like to be in a dogfight. Weighed against all this one has to consider the plot holes and corny dialogue - on terra firma it is grimly predictable - it doesn't have a clue as to how two people in love might act and talk and think. It's not so much hot as distinctly enervating. The cure for those with rose-tinted glasses about Top Gun, will be to sit down and watch it again.

I am giving Top Gun a full 10/10, partly to try and boost its overall rating (6.2 at the time of writing) which is far too low IMO.Far too many people rip on this movie for its lack of accuracy, its shallow characters and cheesy dialogue.However, whilst this is all true, the overall movie is incredibly well paced, acted, scripted and directed. It is a masterpiece of action movie making, and Tony Scott made a number of high quality movies.The positives that stand out for me, that far outweigh the negatives:1) The superb cinematography and action sequences. Some of the shots of F-14s launching and landing on the carrier at sunset are the best you will ever see in any military movie. The dog fighting scenes are incredible, and no CGI. To shoot in the F-14 cockpits Scott used the Super-35 35mm format to get widescreen cameras in the tight spaces without anamorphic lenses. As the movie was made with the Navy's blessing, full access to military assets and aid was provided, including the F-5s playing the role of Migs.All the pedants who rip on this movie for lack of accuracy should just chill, and enjoy the stunning photography of F-14s lighting up their after-burners on take-off. The cinematography throughout the whole movie is gorgeous. Just make sure you watch it on Blu-Ray!2) Incredible pacing and direction. Whilst the story is 1D and comic book simple, the movie is a master class of direction. Tony Scott's finest movie IMO. The movement between action, fun, romance, depression, elation is just perfectly done for a feel good action movie. There is not a single scene, or second of the movie, that is out of place. IMO the direction is as good as any of the classics from Coppola, Scorcesse, Spielberg, R Scott etc.3) Music. Harold Faltemeyer's soundtrack is brilliant. His Top Gun theme duet with Steve Stevens on guitar just superb. Songs such as Danger Zone, Mighty Wings, and Take My Breath Away have become iconic as part of this film.4) Acting. The actors don't really have much to work with, but ooze screen charisma. The sexual tension between Cruise and McGillis is palpable. The supporting cast are superb, Skerrit, Kilmer, Edwards, Ironside etc. put in great performances.5) Cheesy Dialogue. The worst thing about the movie, is also one of the the best things about this movie! Who hasn't felt the 'need for speed'?I am a fan of military jets, but not for one moment did I think Top Gun was supposed to be a documentary of Navy aviation. Judge it on what it's supposed to be, a feel good action movie with some basis in reality.Climb into the cockpit with Maverick and Goose and enjoy the ride....!

in the 80's action movies were the movies of the decade and Top Gun was a movie that i loved. whether you enjoy war and army based action movies Top gun is all of those things but it has romance between the main Character and one of his instructors and the balance of the action and the romance works. Tom cruse is at the height of his career and this movie sets him up in a iconic role as the lead character Maverick and his flying partner Goose played by Anthony Edwards was Mavericks friend but also someone who he can put his problems on and they have a unique relationship Kelly Mcgillis is Charlie the love interest of Maverick and a instructor at the top gun academy and they have such a great relationship which is shown on screen. The rival of Maverick and Goose is Iceman who is played by Val Kilmer who is a cool headed fighter pilot who has skills which match Maverick. Top gun works its a movie that repeats danger zone like 5 times but every time it just works and you've lost that loving felling by the Righteous brothers and the music is done perfectly and the story is compelling it works and i always love this movie and i honestly couldn't ask for changes love it.

Its a movie based on US navy elite fighter weapons training and a pilot who has some skills that many pilots wont. Maverick and his friend goose are sent for training in TOP GUN where the best of the best pilots come out and are ready for real action in wars. Maverick is not an ordinary pilot, he doesn't follow rules but has some skills which makes him noticeable by instructors. The movie goes normal till his friend dies during training and maverick feels responsible for it and wants to quit.But in the end he joins the team and gets into real action.Tom cruise gives the right performance for the role. The main drawback for the movie is that the story is predictable. The first half feels normal and nothing is special in it. In the second half, aircraft fights and action keep audience alive. Apart from the story, screenplay is simple and good. Overall the movie keeps you both bored with a simple story line and also gives some nail biting action sequences for action lovers.
