Good start, but then it gets ruined

After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.

This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.

Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.

'The Wedding Ringer' was a surprise hit and a refreshing take on the comedy genre in it's release. When Doug (Josh Gad), a groom-to-be is pressed to find a 'Best Man', he eagerly hires Jimmy (Kevin Hart), a false friend to fill the void.1. The script was written surprisingly well as there are funny lines throughout that makes you laugh-out loud and chuckle as the film progresses. Jeremy Garelick not only does well as a co-writer, but as a director as well, with this being his first feature. The editing is tight and precise so the movie has a nice flow to it which makes you forget about any minor, unfunny or awkward bits. The best writing though comes from the two leads, who has the more funny interactions between them.2. Both Kevin Hart and Josh Gad make a surprisingly good comedic pair, and I'm sure some of their dialogue is ad-lib. Hart's timing is better here than how it is in his other films. He's never played as the short talkative black man and neither is Josh Gad acknowledged as the clumsy fat guy (except in the opening sequence). Kaley Cuoco plays the bride-to-be, but her performance isn't as outstanding or memorable unlike Hart and Gad, as well as the other funny groom's men that form the 'Golden Tux'.3. There's not very many inconsistencies in funny dialogue, but there are a couple unnecessary set-pieces; the dog biting Doug's penis with a race to the hospital while evading a cop and the rugby match against Doug's would-be father-in-law (Ken Howard) and his older friends. Also, setting granny on fire was kind of an old joke at this point too. The acting is great for a comedy film, although some characters like Olivia Thirlby and the other bride's maids feel out of place just a bit since it adds an uninteresting sub-plot.All in all, this film was a lot of fun, especially with a big audience. It's more memorable than most comedies in the past few years. Again, Kevin Hart and Josh Gad are the most impressive and entertaining at that. Just watch, enjoy and laugh:)

Everything about this movie is bad. There is little to no character development and the whole movie seems rushed and badly written. It felt like a mash of scenes taken from other popular comedies and then ultimately tweaked making them even less funny than their counterparts.I mean I get it the writers have brought in Kevin Hart and made a familiar sounding title and a familiar sounding plot and then they've tried to cram in all of the tried and tested methods from every popular romantic comedy over the last 10 years. The main plot is a mix between the movies Hitch and I Love You Man and the family scenes feel like recreations from movies like The Wedding Crashers and Meet The Fockers and then we have the male bonding/ party scenes that are recreations of films like Old School and The Hangover. But the problem is just that, the film feels like a mash up of all of these familiar films with nothing new to offer.At first glance this movie seems to be a recipe for mainstream success but it forgets one major thing. If you're story sucks and your characters are shallow and poorly drawn then the film is going to be terrible no matter what actors you have or what popular themes and scenes from popular movies that you recreate.

Who doesn't like a comedy every now and then? A movie where you don't have to think about anything, just to take the weight of your feet,relax and enjoy the show. The Wedding Ringer is that kind of movie. You don't take it serious at all, and you enjoy the humor. I'm not going to say it's the best comedy ever but I had a couple of good laughs and that's enough for me to have a nice evening in front of the big screen. The chemistry between Kevin Hart and Josh Gad works perfectly well. I thought they were both funny. There are a couple of memorable scenes that make me laugh again just thinking about them. And that's what we want when we think about a comedy. So, The Wedding Ringer might not be the best ever, but it is for sure good enough to me to have a good time.

I really wanted to like this movie, mainly because I think Kevin Hart has had a rough few years. Not financially of course; the guy has been starring in more than a few comedies the past couple years, but critically, none of them (Ride Along, Get Hard, About Last Night) can be called a genuinely great movie. The Wedding Ringer is the best of the bunch, though. This is Kevin Hart in his element - his most dynamic performance and playing a Hitch-style role where he gets hired to be people's best mans for guys who don't have any friends. Josh Gad plays the loser character, and he and Hart have great chemistry and some very funny back and forth moments. I was actually surprised at how much I was enjoying this movie for the first half, but then the problems became too glaring to ignore.The premise feels fresh and fun in the beginning. It felt like a cross between Wedding Crashers and I Love You, Man without directly copying either of them. The problem is, those movies had more character depth beyond their two leads. Here, every character besides Hart and Gad are cardboard cutouts. The biggest offender is Paige, played by Kaley Cuoco. She is the most shallow caricature of a woman I've seen in comedy in a long long time. It's a shame because Kaley does what she can, but her character is so one-dimensional you can't even connect with her on any level. The random groomsman have their moments, but they're still only caricatures. There's the buff guy, the fresh out of prison rapist, the guy who likes pulling out his penis, the socially awkward guy, etc. They may have defining traits, but not one of them feels like a fleshed out character.Structure is another problem in this movie because after an excellent setup, it starts going down the list of the same tropes and beats as every other zany wedding comedy. Competitive family football scene? Check. Guy finding out girl is actually a bitch? Check. Guy and employer who have a strictly business relationship actually become friends in the end? Check. It's a shame because when Kevin Hart is given a chance to shine, he shines. But those moments become less and less often as the movie tries to tie itself neatly with a bow in the third act.The Wedding Ringer is good for a few laughs, but in the end it's just another Kevin Hart comedy that had potential but didn't explore it. The man has proved himself to be a comedic force to be reckoned with. Now it's just a waiting game until he finds a script that fully plays to his strengths. Until then, The Wedding Ringer seems to be the one to beat, and as far as raunchy comedies go, you could do a lot worse.
