There is definitely an excellent idea hidden in the background of the film. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find it.

Synopsis: A young man returns home from military school and finds his mother getting remarried to a new man, the young man suspects that there is something not right about this new man.Review: This is a watchable thriller remake. Great performances, and there is also some unique great camerawork here from time to time. The majority of this movie is a straight up thriller, there are a few elements of creepiness, example the scene where the stepfather murders the old lady (that scene was cold due to there being no film score at all for that scene) and frankly that scene was unwatchable, it is actually a very upsetting scene, i think because the lady was old and couldn't really defend herself or even be able to attempt to.The Stepfather is an unpredictable thriller that is never boring, what more can i say - if you like thrillers watch or re-watch this. I recommend skipping the original because that version is unwatchable, and watch this remake instead.

Have you seen it? No? There is likely a very good reason for that...it stinks.Like nearly ALL the endless remakes and reboots that have been plaguing movie goers for the past decade or so....all this is, is a heartless version of the original. It has no heart. It has no soul.It is a retelling of a film that we all love and cherish...and it adds nothing to the story. It improves nothing but the special effects--which held up very well over time--and in some cases belittles the fans of the original...particularly in the fact that they remade the movie at all, without adding anything clever to it.Like so many other remakes it is a hallow shell of the original.

Danii Disaster

A very average thriller that it's very entertaining. Too predictable, unexciting, and banal. No tension, no suspense.Whoever picked out the cast, is clearly not suitable to pick out actors for movies, and should be fired immediately. All wrong. The Mum's plastic nose was very distracting. And the girlfriend? Why was she even necessary? Her stumbling around half-naked in a tiny bikini for most of the movie, without actually adding anything to the story, served no purpose whatsoever. People watch thrillers for suspense; not to see a swimsuit model. The actor playing the troubled son was probably the most miscast actor here. It is hard to imagine someone less convincing than him in this role. The main character - the stepfather - was also miscast. This guy doesn't have what it takes to pass for a psychopath. I wasn't convinced by his acting or intimidated by his character for a second. In a word: an exceptionally lousily-cast movie.Don't even get me started on character development. There was none. The story sounded intriguing enough... but only in theory. It is sad how they took a promising plot and made it into something as flat and boring as this movie turned out to be.Stale, suspense-less, predictable, badly-executed wannabe thriller (read: snorefest). Basically, very average. To say the least. Wouldn't recommend.

Python Hyena

The Stepfather (2009): Dir: Nelson McCormick / Cast: Dylan Walsh, Penn Badgley, Sela Ward, Amber Heard, Sherry Stringfield: Pathetic remake about intrusion. In this case, a very stupid horror movie intruded upon our cinemas. Michael arrives home from military school but has suspicions regarding his mother's fiancé. Premise is rushed just so that new dad David can prevent several people from exposing him then having a cliffhanger ending. Director Nelson McCormick is backed by fine production but terrible writing. It is written like your average stupid slasher flick and has all the ambition of a sloth in the mid day sun. Dylan Walsh as David is too ominous at the wrong times thus becoming a prop. Penn Badgley as Michael is there to suspect and eventually fight. After all, he is from the military for a reason. The writers wanted a big fight. Wow. The brain power that went into this. Sela Ward plays his "rush into relationship mother." She has all the mentality of a cement block. She will also not suspect a thing, which makes her all the stupider. Amber Heard plays his over sexed girlfriend who has all the mentality of a blowup doll. The film that inspired this crap is hardly a hard core classic and this will never be nothing more than a predictable charade of violence and about as much creativity as a pile of dog sh*t. This film should be stepped on, by an elephant. Score: 3 / 10
