I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

Since the age of 11, Joanna Mills has been having strange visions but doesn't know the reason why. When her latest business trip takes her to Texas, she decides to visit her dad and also a small town called La Salle that's been in her visions. It's here she also meets Terry, a seemingly troubled individual that has been alienated by the towns residents. Joanna's visions continue, but they start to become more vivid and the more she sees, the more she starts to understand what is going on and not all secrets remain unknown. The Return is one of those films where the ending saves it from completely bombing, reason being is because the 70 minutes preceding the end scenes are so slow they make watching cricket seem exciting. Don't get me wrong...the story itself is actually pretty good (even if it's not that original) and I don't usually mind a slower-paced film, but the execution is what let's it down for me. You actually sit there hoping the ending saves the film, and it does. Just. It's also a pretty complex story and is one that you most definitely have to pay attention to right from the very start. If you don't then you will have no hope of understanding it. One other thing...if you're expecting some kind of creepy, scary horror then you'll need to keep looking as this most definitely isn't one of those films. There is some decent suspense to it - eventually - but overall it's hardly a gripping tale and it most definitely is NOT a horror film. The acting is also pretty wooden throughout, and I really do think that Sarah Michelle Gellar is completely overrated, especially in this role, because she just seems to wander through it aimlessly with the odd few "scream queen" moments. I really can't understand some of the rave reviews that The Return has been given by some people as it really is just - apart from the last 10 minutes or so - a bit of a snore-fest.It's definitely not the best and you're not missing that much if you choose not to see it.

It wasn't that bad, it wasn't that great. The alternate ending makes more sense than the real ending, BUT major ick factor. I think I threw up in my mouth a little, to be honest. I can see why they didn't use it. I think it was the original ending and they only half fixed the rest of the movie to make up the difference in time. I would say they wrote it as 25 years and changed it to 15. Horrible job at age progression, makes the movie confusing as it ages some drastically and others not at all. I don't personally believe in reincarnation or possession, and this film sort of blends/confuses the two. Sarah was actually quite good but it's not a role that demands a ton of talent. Check out the alt ending, it works better(keeping that extra 10 years in mind or its criminal) but it'll still make you go ewww.I was generous with stars because others were stingy. If they actually used the creepy alternate ending, 2 stars, 4 since they didn't and it got 6 from me because of how many harsh 1 stars it got.

I disagree with most critics and others that basically bashed this motion picture (that includes a large portion of the public, considering the film's IMDb rating is at 4.7 at the moment of my writing this review). On the contrary, I found this to be a decent, relatively well made psychological thriller with some decent acting, good direction, an interesting premise (original if nothing else) and above all, excellent cinematography. Mind you, nowhere near being a masterpiece, but a good, decent piece of work, better than the average fare we usually get spoon fed from Hollywood these days.Recommended if you like tense movies, movies where the ending is not immediately spelled out at the beginning of the film.
