Richthofen goes off to war like thousands of other men. As fighter pilots, they become cult heroes for the soldiers on the battlefields. Marked by sportsmanlike conduct, technical exactitude and knightly propriety, they have their own code of honour. Before long he begins to understand that his hero status is deceptive. His love for Kate, a nurse, opens his eyes to the brutality of war.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

MvR is one of the most celebrated war pilots in history. I was not expecting a romance novel from this film but alas the nurse from hell haunted you from every corner...she was the sly crafty creature, not MvR!!! If you know much about aviation history I can pretty much say with confidence those aerial acrobats with WWI aircraft were over the top maneuvers. I recall Howard Hughes having problems with his "Hells Angels" film to accurately portray the insanity of air warfare, so what did he do?? He added clouds! Not CGI spins and dives and almost UFO action to the screen. Even if you worked on more modern aircraft you know the evasive moves are impossible to perform with all that drag. I loved "Top Gun" for the much aligned hard to fathom interplay but this vehicle takes it to the extreme. Yes, it was fun to watch, if I wanted to see a cartoon. The cookie cutter flyboy look was impressive but please, a titch of variety might keep me on target with the characters. Maybe that nurse implanted a GPS in MvR's brain, eh? I did like to imagine he had a fling or two given his high testosterone levels but three kisses and one I love you was not exactly Take Me Away Calgon level. The lovely friendship with his dubious killer Fiennes was delightful and really added to the friend/enemy distinction. How much of all this was researched, accurate, or extrapolated my dear German filmmakers? I dare say this could not possibly be your responsibility and wondered how badly you balked at the final production. Oh well, MvR was truly adorable and a humble aw shucks kinda dude. They should sell scarves with his red logo! High recommend for CGI aerial warfare scenes, cute flyboys, and never showing the actual battle that took his life. Kudos LuftWaffles!

Exclusive film about the true story of an airline pilot in the First World War. The hero is brave and highly idealistic man who through all his victories achieved in the air, falls in love with an "earth" girl who was a military doctor and treat wounded in the battles. After successes in the battles, the protagonist enters the final battle with the clear idea that it might not come out alive. Despite his dedication and devotion as to other pilots and to the concepts of duty, justice, love, he is extremely straightforward and childishly naive person. In its relations with other people comes with understanding and compassion.http://vihrenmitevmovies.blogspot.com/

Rate this excellent movie as a true gem, next to Letters from Iwo Jima (Clint Eastwood), Hell in the Pacific (John Boorman), Die Fälschung (Volker Schlöndorff), Stalingrad (Joseph Vilsmaier), Das Boot (Wolfgang Petersen), Die Brücke (Bernhard Wicki) and Paths of Glory (Stanley Kubrick). Furthermore I am a dedicated fan of the movie "The Battle of Britain", which I saw at least a dozen of times like "The Longest Day" and my greatest war movie Inglorious Basterds (Valentino Tarantino) with Til Schweiger of The Red Baron/ Der Rote Baron. This very impressive war movie shows the First World War from the view of the flyers from the German side: Manfred von Richthofen and his companions. It shows beautiful impressions of the front, the area behind the front, the aerial scenes (Baloons) and even a precious view in the once splendid capital Berlin with the crossing of Friedrich Strasse and Leipziger Strasse: the heart of imperial Berlin. No other movie about WW1 shows such ultra realistic and colorful impressions. The movie obviously was made around this "Impressionism" style and offer furthermore the love affair of Manfred with a Belgian nurse. She is now totally forgotten. The movie doesn't show how Manfred was shot down. This remains a mystery until today. Many complain about the script, but I personally have no problems with that. The actors performed very convincingly!!! Even the nurse, which was not from France but from the German provinces in Belgium. Heady is beautiful. Fiennes as Brown is British and alright! The Germans are all at least real Germans!!! This is an enormous quality, where Hollywood is terrible in all these aspects. Germans are also no superman losing their pilots in air combat and soldiers on the ground in even numbers compared to their enemies. War is pure attrition and the movie remains very loyal to this rule, unlike most other movies, were only the anonymous enemy takes the losses. The left out scenes would have added great value to the already very well selected scenes. The only major flaw in the movie is that the Germans speak English. A minor point is that in front line scenes or night bombardment scene too many soldiers are hit within the view. That WW1 was bloody was clear to me, but these scenes were a little over the top. Music is also very moving and adds greatly to the atmosphere. The song at the end was also well chosen, a little "daring" and refers to Shirley Bassey. Altogether an unique war movie and true pictorial gem.

I'm a sucker for World War I aviation movies, be it "The Dawn Patrol", "The Blue Max", or "Hell's Angel"s,love the all. So I was looking forward to seeing this movie, but oh man, was I disappointed! Here is a synapsis of 90% of the movie: Close up of fighter pilot with war face, doing a primal scream; doesn't matter if he is German, British, French, or Klingon, same shot. Following this is a scene where the Baron's main squeeze is lecturing him (or the furniture) about the immorality of war.Next scene, war face and primal scream, followed by another lecture on the immorality of war until the movie thankfully ends abruptly. Save your time: watch instead some of the afore mentioned movies, made with real airplanes, real characters, and in some case actual World War I pilots!
