... View More"The New York Ripper" follows a string of savage murders being committed in New York City by a three-fingered maniac who quacks like a duck while torturing his victims with a cavalcade of sharp objects.Lauded by many of Fulci's diehard fans, "The New York Ripper" is one of his most violent and sexual, and for that reason stands in a league of its own amongst his filmography. Regular viewers of his work know he is not entirely known for cohesive narratives or dialogue, but with "New York Ripper," he does quite literally take a stab at a more straightforward giallo. This is not to say the film is entirely cohesive, because it's not, but when held against something like "The Beyond" or "The House by the Cemetery," it's fairly straightforward save a few quirks. The film has the characteristic bad dubbing that virtually all of Fulci's films have, though it's not quite as distracting here. The performances are rather solid, particularly from Andrea Occhipinti and Almanta Suska, the latter of whom has a bewitching screen presence. The real draw here, unsurprisingly, is the gore, which has Fulci in full form; it's notably violent even by his standards, and the perverse sexuality that is part and parcel of many of the murder scenes adds a disturbing layer. The conclusion has a fun switchback twist that takes the viewer by surprise, but in the end, I wouldn't rank "The New York Ripper" anywhere near my favorite of Fulci's work. Though extreme and fairly well-plotted, it does lack the ethereal, paranormal ambiance that drew me into some of his other work. That said, it's certainly far better than "Manhattan Baby." 6/10.
... View MoreSick Movie. Excellent Cinematography, Lighting, Kills, Music, and Scenes of old NYC. There's some cool use of color lighting. Not overbearing and not all the time. Unlike Suspiria which is a pile of crap movie, and uses color lighting like it's going out of style.Acting and Dubbing was OK, not great. I didn't like the killers motivation, or the ending. The plot needed some more work. The killings, especially the whore killing was sick. This is a great B movie. I give it a 8. A 10 to compensate against other low ratings. See the movie.
... View MoreThis movie its amazing, not only is it a well made giallo but its also one of the sleazier ones, one of my favorite Lucio Fulci movies, there's gore, nudity and even better, one of the most memorable killers on cinema history, a killer that talks like Donald Duck, just genius, the movie its you typical giallo or slasher movie, there's a killer who kills people and the police must catch him, but its the way its done what really matters, Fulcis direction its very spectacular in all of his movies, in this one hes a bit more subtle than in something like The Beyond, but still very good, there's a lot of debate regarding to who the killer is, many people suggest its one of the people who helped to catch him or the character that's the more likely to be, the father, the characters are great, they are all sleazy bastards, there are great quotes on this movie and some memorable moments, its great.
... View MoreAfter making the (for the most part) fantastic "Gates Of Hell"-trilogy, Lucio Fulci clearly needed to take his foot of the throttle for a little while. "The New York Ripper" isn't a bad movie, but to his standards it's surprisingly middle of the road. I mean sure, as usual it's a hundred times gorier than the average thriller, but apart from that there isn't much to keep your attention. It's a pretty underwritten whodunit with too few suspects, all too transparent red herrings, a dreadfully slow pace and a truly laughable motive. Thankfully even at his most pedestrian Fulci can still come up with two or three scenes that keep you awake. The scene with the old man is a fantastic opening that pulls you right in, the middle-aged woman who's bored with her husband provides some fascinatingly unerotic segments when trying to find arousal elsewhere (the poolhall sequence is a real "huh?" of a scene), and the ending is entertainingly straight-forward to say the least. And of course the movie's cinematography is great as always, and the synth soundtrack provides a nice contrast with the grim subject matter. So there are quite a few good things to say about this movie, you just have to fish them out between huge chunks of a boring cop and a boring professor trying to find a boring serial killer: that's not very easy to do.
