I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

I have a feeling since winning an Oscar in 2002, Adrien Brody has been a little disappointed in his career trajectory. Bad choices, bad management? Or it may be that he wants to do unusual films. Who knows?"The Jacket" from 2005 is a very good film, however, which also stars Keira Knightley, Kris Kristofferson, and Jennifer Jason-Leigh. Brody is Jack Starks, who served in Iraq and is killed, except as they're about to put him in the freezer, he blinks. After a long recovery, he is out on his own and hitches a ride with someone. When they are stopped by the police for driving too slowly, the man kills the cop and Jack is injured. The man cleans his gun and throws it in Jack's direction. Then he takes off. Unfortunately, when Jack recovers, he doesn't remember anything about the accident. All he remembers is that he helped fix the truck belonging to a drunken woman, who was with her little girl. No one believes him. After a trial, he is found not guilty by reason of insanity and placed in a mental institution. There, he is given an experimental treatment (that actually was banned in the '70s) and overmedicated. During the treatments, he remembers things from his past...and also is able to go into the future, where he learns something disturbing.Really good film, part thriller/part drama, based on a 1913 book by Jack London which actually had to do with the prison system. Brody is sympathetic as a good man caught in traumatic and unspeakable circumstances. Knightley, as a bitter waitress who drinks, is excellent, as are Kristofferson and Leigh as doctors, one cold and clinical and one concerned and empathetic. One more thing that knocked me for a loop. One of the men in the institution, Rudy MacKenzie, drove me crazy. Black hair, American, not great skin, fast talker, and clearly unstable. He looked SO familiar to me, yet I couldn't place him. I thought, this guy is someone famous but I don't know where I've seen him. I can guarantee you won't either. And as it happens, this is the second time I've seen him in something where I didn't recognize him at first. I didn't look at the cast list ahead of time. Don't do it and see if you can figure it out.

I cannot express how much I love this movie... or perhaps more importantly, why I love this movie. It's just a beautiful movie that makes you feel emotions both happy and sad. The acting and filmmaking are incredible. The plot is simple and even random in some regards, but it all works and the movie plays like a work of art.The enjoyment that I got from the Jacket is definitely different from the way that I enjoy most films. There is something greater to this film that most films don't offer. That being said, this is definitely one of my favorite films. It actually pains me a little that it has gotten so little recognition.

To start, yes, The Jacket shouldn't be really close to any consideration as a horror film but that is contrary to the internet movie database's classification. Receiving a horror label presents the opportunity for discussion since the film leaves a lasting impression on the viewers on so many levels. Without giving too much of anything away, the film can be summed up as dark, romantic thriller with a strong tale based on time-travel and redemption. Filmmaking was impeccably constructed, bestowing a cold and somber atmosphere with great casting calls consisting of Adrien Brody and Keira Knightley as the main leads. The Jacket is a tremendous psychological piece that won't scare or shock but is highly imaginative and emotional.

I watched this movie twice in a night, I found it that excellent. The whole premise was very compelling, though in fairness a bit unoriginal. Adrien Brody was mind numbingly good as Jack Starks. His post-war traumatized character--brilliantly done. His emotions were very contagious and seemed entirely genuine. At first, I felt the film was a bit too anachronistic, but then I found the appeal in that. As a viewer, I was constantly looking for nuances/clues that would tell me whether his visions were actual events, or fabrications of his damaged brain. Keira executed her role nicely, and her husky American accent deserves some applause. Her performance was well done, and her body language is fluid and natural. Who says she is a wooden actress again?? There were enough plot twists to keep the movie interesting, and the supporting roles were just as deserving of praise. It was very easy to sympathize with all the characters, especially Jack and Jackie, who are both broken in different ways. I will say that the sex scene between Jack and Jackie seemed like titillating filler that neither added or took away from the plot. The ending was touching, albeit a little confusing. Don't think the movie brought me much closure, nor answered my questions. But I fancy a plot that keeps me thinking hours on end to make sense of the whole thing. I recommend!
