A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

This movie is very good and I recommend watching it despite the fact that the ending is ambiguous and was written and produced to be that way. Its not for the millennial crowd for sure----there are no jump scares or explosions or car chases or digital side stories------but I imagine if there are some from the 20-32 crowd who are critical thinkers, it might work. The acting and screenplay are very good. The story is believable in that it presents a believable set of circumstances for having the young couple seek a documentary investigation of a mysterious and beautiful cult leader. The cult leader's story is not so believable in that it asks us to believe in time travel, but that's the point of the documentary that the young couple are making. This film is not a documentary only a film about a couple that infiltrates a small cult and then is face with a dilemma. Don't feel bad or be angry at the lack of story resolution: there are many , many people who spent a lot of time trying to figure this one out! You only have to read the movie blogs and "endings explained"- style websites to see that no clear explanation exists. However, if you pay attention to some of the techniques employed by the Director to provide clues (back stories) or reasons to believe in the veracity of the Cult leader, you will find this film rewarding. There is a possibility that requires a leap of faith!

I can see why some would be disappointed in this film. It's not just very slow-paced, but it doesn't ever get too crazy in any of its happenings or situations, and some may find it infuriating. I do think the film could've done even more than it did, but as it is, I thought it was great. Certainly no Martha Marcy May Marlene, a film that's also one of my favorites, but it's one where the atmosphere and acting are more than enough. Brit Marling is absolutely amazing in this, such a natural presence and doesn't overact at all while getting her points across. Great performance and such a talent. I strongly recommend this under seen gem, and really, to anyone.

This movie is absolutely terrible. Terrible acting, terrible nose, stupid ideas, and completely unconvincing. From the very beginning I was completely and utterly disinterested and giggling at the attempts at "clever" and "cool"... ironic really as the most unconvincing cult leader actually references "Intellectual Bullshit" which this terrible movie comprises mostly of... or attempts at said bullshit.Maggie, the tramp from the future, 2054 to be precise... and we know this because of a symbolic stick-anchor tattoo on her ankle (where else would you have such a tattoo, being from the future and all) is the least convincing cult leader / messiah-type I have ever seen in a movie, or even heard about. The secret handshake... the attempts to shock... the complete and utter disregard for how convincing cults actually are... this shows that humans can be less than stupid.... and in 40 years time there is little access to MUSIC?!?!!?! She didn't actually remember for god's sake.Terrible movie. Maggie is a terrible character.. ALL the actors are worthless / useless.Oh... and I bet The Cranberries MIGHT have something to say about futuristic bint brainwashing them with 'The Cranberries'.

Let me begin by saying the movie was great throughout. It's original, thought provoking, and you are always suspenseful throughout the whole movie, guessing as to what could come next. For the budget it was made on, the movie looked quite professional, with great acting as well. But one of the big problems I noticed people had with this film was the plot holes, the missing details. Luckily, these aren't huge gaping holes that make the main story confusing, just details like why the child was acting so strange. There are two ways you could look at this though. You could see it as the directors being lazy and not explaining everything, or you could see it as the directors purposely leaving out those details, making you actively think about the video. I tend to think the latter, especially in this case. People said that inception was confusing too, but that's what made it so much better then your average movie. Rarely does a flick ever come along that makes you think instead on just passively watching a TV screen, and this is one of them.
