The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

I didn't expect anything from this film, a lot of people never even heard of the original Sniper. I remember watching the original as a kid and wanting to become a Marine Sniper.. Thomas Beckett was my hero. When I saw there was a 2nd I said uh-oh... but wow, it was actually really damned good.Yes people will continuously argue that the plot doesn't make "sense" and that deserved to go straight to video, blah blah. But I loved it, I knew very little of Bokeem Woodbine. Berenger was classic Berenger, great little 1 liners, played his character perfectly... but Bokeem was hands down the star of this one. He has become one of my favorite actors thanks to this movie... if you haven't watched Fargo (TV Show Season 2) you will fall in love with Woodbine's character.Back to Sniper 2, it may not be as "good" or "original" as the 1st movie, but I would certainly say that Bokeem outdid Billy Zane in this one. Just think of Sniper (original) but in a shattered, beaten down Eastern Europe, and urban warfare... I think this movie came out before all of these Call of Duty Black Ops and Modern Warfare games which everyone seems to love... I can't imagine those gamers not enjoying this flick. This movie reminded me a lot of the CoD Modern Warfare games, it doesn't take place in a jungle or desert, yes the production value wasn't all there... but quite possibly one of the best war/battle scenes of all time... debatable, but check it out and tell me I'm wrong.I would have honestly nominated Bokeem for some type of award, he was just that amazing in Sniper 2, a death-row inmate with nothing to lose, what's not to love.... as for every other Sniper movie I have watched (or tried to), they all just don't compare, not anywhere near this one. Sniper 1 and Sniper 2 are different movies, very similar, both quite amazing if you enjoy war, killing, etc.Every other Sniper movie made, and I have not scene the 3rd... but I have tried to watch Sniper Reloaded, Sniper Legacy, and one other... and they don't even compare. As much as I love Berenger and Billy Zane (who are in the others, not necessarily together).... none of them could add up to the original or 2nd.Everyone has their opinion, mine was obviously pretty long, I know there are a lot of people out there who disliked this movie, for whatever reasons.. everyone is entitled to an opinion, as a 32 year old who saw Sniper 1 when I was roughly 10-11 years old.... Sniper 2 was a pleasant sequel/follow-up... and I saw Sniper 2 quite a few years ago for the first time, and still enjoy watching it if nothing is on... especially the second half!

After sustaining an injury that diminishes his value in the eyes of the United States Marine Corps, "MSgt Thomas Beckett" (Tom Berenger) is basically forced to retire and subsequently attempts to pursue employment elsewhere. Although he drifts from one job to another, he is surprised one day when a senior official from the CIA and a colonel from the Marine Corps approach him about taking an assignment in Bosnia to kill a prominent Serbian leader. Upon accepting the assignment he is given a spotter named "Cole" (Bokeem Woodbine) who has been released from a prison cell in Fort Leavenworth for the murder of an army officer. Although the assignment is extremely difficult, MSgt Beckett is satisfied with Cole enough to proceed with the mission but upon arriving in country finds that there are certain details that were deliberately omitted--and things take an immediate turn for the worse afterward. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that, even though the terrain was quite different than the first movie, there was still enough action and suspense to carry the film for the most part. That said, those who enjoy a movie of this type might want to give this one a look and with that in mind I have rated it accordingly. Average.

I watched first part of "Sniper" movie and it was decent. But this part 2 is just retarded! I needed like 45 mins into movie to figure out who is the "bad guy", where he's from, where's this movie taking part, why are they talking different language than supposed and how did they manage to place Serbian town Požaervac into Hungary, how the hell muslims lived 600 years in Eastern Europe etc.For all of you who don't know the facts, let me help you:1. This movie is filmed in Hungary, the story of the movie is taking place in Hungary too, but it's supposed to be taking place in Serbia 2. Actors speak Hungarian language, but they are supposedly Serbs 3. They transport imprisoned Cole from Hungarian town to Požarevac (Serbian town), like those 2 towns are in the same country and there are no borders 4. Sophia's brothers have Serbian names, but they speak Hungarian 5. That rifle isn't German Mauser by the way 6. It's not the muslims (Bosnians) who lived there for 600 years, but Serbs and Croats 7. It's not Serbs who were killing and expelling Bosnians but vice versa 8. That "Serbian" general they want to kill doesn't have Serbian name at all and he's obviously a Hungarian according to his name 9. A helicopter which "Serbian" special forces used in film has 'SFOR' inscription on it, which means "Stabilisation Force" and it was NATO's "peacekeeping" force, not Serbian 10.This is just another biased anti-Serbian movie, made to once more represent Serbs as terrorists, heartless murders and worst peopleBottom line: this movie insults the intelligence of average man. I put it into top 3 worst movies I've seen in my life. I don't know is it director's ignorance and stupidity, but knowing how America wants to represent Serbs I bet this is just another biased movie funded by American imperialists and masons, probably by George Soros, who himself is Hungarian. So many misleading and wrong historical facts, language replacement, countries swaping, geographical errors.IF YOU READ THIS - DON'T BOTHER WATCHING THIS CRAP MOVIE!

Sniper 2 is not worth your time. I had no misconceptions about this flick beforehand, but I admit disappointment in being proved right. The original Sniper on it's own level was definitely enjoyable so it was only by being a fan of the original that made sitting through this mildly bearable. I have a real hard time envisioning people who aren't familiar with the original Sniper enjoying (much less watching) this. Sniper 2 carries the original's moniker, but it's only through the miracle of direct-to-video bastardization that it lands at our feet. For those unfamiliar with the original, the underlying story followed hard-ass Sgt. Thomas Beckett (Tom Berenger) in the Panamanian jungle where he put to use his excellent sniping skills and jungle know-how for the US government carrying out sanctioned "hits" so to speak. Without giving away any deeper plot elements or spoilers to the original film - and as you can probably piece together yourself - he survived the first time out and is back for more in "2".Surprisingly Sniper 2 actually rolls out with a nice atmospheric opening.... that lasts all of two minutes. After that my dismal expectations were met and the brief goodness gave away to the bad. For instance the movie pulls out a tried and true scene where two agency suits show up to recruit Beckett for a mission. The set-up is low energy verging on lousy all except for Beckett's "price" for doing the off the books job which rings true to character. The actual mission itself is so uninteresting and basic that I just knew I was about to see betrayals and lies pop out sooner or later. So color me unimpressed in the story department, but at least there's Beckett. This time around he's teamed up with Jake Cole (Bokeem Woodbine). A US marine we're told is on death row, but for reasons never drawn upon, fleshed out or explained. This is the extent of Cole's character development too. Again after the fiasco of the original, I'd suspect Beckett would be a tad more apprehensive about new partners, but Cole's record "7 real world missions. 3 confirmed" seems to put him at ease. So with all the loose pieces in place the duo trot off to some nondescript European locale to bounce a bullet off some third world would-be dictator. The fact the movie can't even carry out the set-up nor the actual act with a modest amount of energy pretty much dictates the rest of this mess. Only towards the end of the film does the flick come close to something worthwhile and the only thing that barely salvages this train wreck is Berenger's return as Beckett. It feels as if everyone involved in this movie knew that they were making junk because Sniper 2 never once feels like anything more than a direct to video experience. The story, the sights, the smells, it's got as much excitement as peeling carrots. It's technically well made from a workman's perspective, but it's blunt, lacking both atmosphere and excitement. Making things worse is it doesn't even make for a decent sniper movie. Some parts of the film feel like they could have been fitted into almost any other B-grade action movie and had some sniping angle tacked on to them afterwards for namesake. Having also been removed from the jungle and placed amongst streets and bombed out scenery robs much atmosphere and much needed backdrop for a movie supposed to be primarily about snipers and their art.Take for instance one scene that happens on a public street. There's machine guns firing off, things blowing up, the ramming of cars, characters running, a fireball explosion -- everything you need to get the juices pumping. Yet there is no excitement and there is no sniping. The last half tries to get something going by spring-boarding in this rival enemy sniper, but by this point it's hopeless. All the film's enemies up to this point were underdeveloped and this enemy sniper is no different. Not to mention the whole dueling sniper aspect is rushed and rather short having been tacked onto the near end. Blah.Sniper 2 is just by-the-numbers film making. The kind of bad sequel we all expect these days. The only people who should be disappointed to see how truly mediocre it is are fans of the original. If you fall in that boat be forewarned. Beckett is back and while the movie does expand on his character, the whole thing is dull.
