There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.

I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.

Pokemon movies tend to be bad movies, at least that's what everybody normally thinks if you have never seen the Japanese version of these movies. Japanese subs can never save the movie but they do help them tremendously. And this movie has that most apparant. Okay, so here's the deal with this movie. The English Dub is like a good bad movie which is stupid a lot of the time but still fun to watch, kinda like a funny Shyamalan movie but the Japanese Sub is infinitely better, but not enough to save the whole movie and is comparable in quality to something like a good Shyamalan movie. The reason is that the movie itself is the same between the two but the writing, themes, and music choices are actually superior in the sub than in the dub. The reason is that although the dub music sounds good, there are choices made in the sub version that really make certain scenes a lot more engaging and powerful with one exception, the opening song. The song in the Dub is kickass awesome while the sub's theme song is really stupid.Thematically, the sub is also a million times better. Rather than subverting and ignoring the original message of the movie with dumb politically correct nonsense, the sub carries an interesting series of moral questions that actually build on one another. The movie has effort put into the message which is reinforced by dialogue, scenes, and actions performed by characters and Pokemon. Furthermore, the message isn't obvious and you have to think about what's going on. However, some things are kinda wrong with the dialogue at times and some lines unfortunately don't make sense, however it is still better than the dub's dialogue. However, with that said the Sub can't change certain plot decisions made in the movie meaning that a lot of stuff can't be explained with logic. However, the explanation is actually there for most of the sub and has things that can be understood if one pays attention to the movie...for the most part. This is something the dub doesn't do, it just lays down a bad explanation for events that doesn't make sense to the viewer(s) and you just have to break your suspension of disbelief. The voice acting in the sub is also way better. People sound organic and conversations feel natural between people in the sub while people in the dub sound stupid and corny a lot of the time with a few exceptions. Overall I'm giving this a 7/10 for the Sub while the dub gets a whopping 5/10. If your gonna watch this and want a bad movie, watch the dub you will not be disappointed. If you love Pokemon, like me however, and want a better movie (not great) but better movie please don't watch the dub, just listen to the Pokemon theme in the dub and then watch the Japanese sub. It is a lot better and way more enjoyable.

I loved Pokémon growing up. I stopped watching it around 2009-ish and moved on to other things. However I have recently been revisiting Pokémon and have decided to do a Pokémon movie marathon. The first in the series is definitely a good one. I'll admit there is some nostalgia-related bias here, but I enjoyed it as a whole. It does have some flaws. It is basically your typical "bad guy vows to take over the world" story and the animation has not aged well. There are also some questionable scenes. For example, Ash trying to punch Mewtwo was kind of stupid and the "pokemon tears ex machina" scene was pretty contrived. However, there is much to enjoy. The characters were as likable as ever. Mewtwo is an awesome Pokemon. Some of his powers, while outlandish, were wicked cool. You also gotta love Mew.The Pokémon battles and the battle between Mew and Mewtwo will give Pokémon fans some excitement. I also appreciated the messages that we must all live in peace and that it matters more how you live your life than why you were created.Revisiting my childhood was an absolute joy. As for the quality of the movie, I wouldn't call it great, but it was definitely very good and worth watching for Pokémon fans.RATING: B

It's hard for me to believe that I used to love "Pokémon" when I was younger. I owned a few of the VHS tapes and some of the toys. Nowadays, the only "Pokémon" related thing I enjoy is the video game, "Pokkén Tournament" for the Nintendo Wii U. I don't like the anime series anymore; However, I find "Pokémon: The First Movie" to be nothing but a piece of stupid, nonsensical, filler crap. That is literally how horrible this film is.My parents took me to see this movie back in the 90's when I was a child and I ate it up like candy. Unfortunately, my opinion on it has changed. It has got to be one of the worst animated films I've ever seen. It is rotten to the very core and gives a terrible message to its target audience. Not only is the message confusing, but also hypocritical. These characters take these creatures out to battle, yet when they see them fight clone versions of themselves, they have the gall to turn a 180 degree angle and say fighting is wrong. Congratulations, movie. You've made the characters of "Pokémon" into lousy, pathetic hypocrites. As if the plot of the film wasn't bad enough, there's also these ridiculous filler scenes with Team Rocket, and they aren't the main antagonists in here, Mewtwo is. The writers could have just left them out of the picture completely. They have no excuse to be in the movie whatsoever. If I had a choice between watching this movie and looking at paint dry on the wall, I'd pick the paint. "Pokémon: The First Movie" is garbage. No, "garbage" is too good a word for it. It's an absolute disgrace to animated films, and I feel ashamed of myself for loving it as a child.
