As straightforward as spinoffs can get, really. Kids love talking cars, and kids love toy airplanes, so kids will love talking airplanes too, right? And they do, or at least mine do, even if none of this cast has half the sparkle or charisma of a Lightning McQueen or a Tow Mater. Which should speak volumes, since both are pretty much the bottom of the barrel in Pixar's repertoire. As competition-focused racing movies go, it's middle of the pack - energetic and often lovely, but flat as a board and thoroughly predictable. Younger audiences will thrill to the frequent chase scenes, with a good mix of terrain thrown in as appreciable spice, but their chaperones won't find much material hiding beneath the surface. Cars had a timely message about the loss of the great American highway lurking under there, and at least Cars 2 had some buck to its script, but there's really nothing more to this one than a simple played-out underdog sporting saga. And hey, that's perfectly okay. There's plenty of room on the screen for bright, shiny, cookie-cutter kids' fare, and it certainly doesn't offend. It's just no comparison to the Pixar-branded forerunners that paved these lanes. Good enough for a quiet evening, no more, no less, and it gave my three-year-old boys a good dose of imagination fuel.

I saw this movie on an airplane once since I figured it would be appropriate. I know that it has some connections to Cars, even if it isn't Pixar. While I heard good things about Cars and bad things about Cars 2, I was wondering how a movie like this would fare. Well, I think that the film was good in the end. It may not be entirely realistic, but it's a cartoon so it really isn't supposed to be. I admit that the whole plot of the movie can be a bit obvious and predictable, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. Planes was a good use of time on that long flight. The subplots may not be what you expect, but that makes them all the more better. I hope that you enjoyed the film like I did.

Besides a totally predictable film and all the characters are totally forgettable, without any of the brilliant moments of it's inspiration movie (cars), this movie also have a huge geographical mistake: The part of the race between Yucatan, Mexico and New York, we can see the planes flying through a big canyon (colorado canyon?) in their way to new york. Unless fly all the way west to Arizona and then go back north east to NY, which makes as many sense as going from LA to Denver but going to Hawaii first. Of course we can understand the idea of action scenes of planes making hard maneuvers in a canyon, but children should at least be entertained with true facts.

While Pixar was able to make movies that were able to appeal to adults too (not only kids), it seems this Disney rip on "Cars" does not care that much about that. Cars itself was one of the weaker Pixar movies, which is not saying that much because it still was above average. This is a bit weaker than that though. We get through the motions more or less without emotion. Kids will or might lap it up as it is. But adults will have issues caring for the main character or anybody else for that matter. It checks every story point it has to, but that is something you notice more like a passing of signs on the road. Show it to the kids, but don't expect to like it yourself
