Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

Norbit (2007): Dir: Brian Robbins / Cast: Eddie Murphy, Thandie Newton, Eddie Griffin, Cuba Gooding Jr.Terry Crews: Eddie Murphy proved comic brilliance in The Nutty Professor playing multiple roles. What Norbit proves is that lightning doesn't necessarily strike twice. Murphy plays Norbit who was abandoned at a Chinese orphanage where he grows up to be the target of bullying. Saved one day by the massive Rasputa he is forced into marriage. Director Brian Robbins improves yet story is still simplistic formula with an ending lacking real feeling. Robbins is a director whose career is subdued with a long list of junk such as Good Burger, Ready to Rumble and Hardball. Eddie Murphy plays the humble Norbit as well as his overweight dominating wife and neither role evokes feeling. Thandie Newton is flat as a childhood love. The role is standard fare making it a complete waste of her time and talent. Eddie Griffin plays a pimp and Cuba Gooding Jr. plays Newton's scheming fiancée. Terry Crews is cast as Rasputa's older brother and that cannot be any less than embarrassing for his resume. There is a theme regarding facing adversaries but it is buried underneath Murphy's makeup job. This film is a failure on all accounts and if the script had as much time spent on it as Rasputa's humongous bulk then perhaps Norbit might have reason to smile. Score: 4 / 10

Eddie had crossed over into the g and pg film arena and his original fans that knew him from "Raw" had been yearning to hear the Eddie Murphy they grew to love. He delivered that and then some. This is not a film for those who like him in pg and g rated films. Nor if you are sensitive about jokes about people overweight. I hadn't seen anyone deliver multiple roles in such a funny way since Richard Pryor. A must see for any of you who enjoyed him in Raw or Delirious. It will have you rolling from the onset. His facial expressions and sounds as Norbit are a dry humor but his role as Rasputia is blatant humor. He personifies an angry wife down to the letter.

My problem with this film is as follows: It's not offensive. Humour, in my opinion, is not offensive. This film simply lacks quality. This is what would happen if you taught a third grader all the sexual, racial, and societal humour of a thirty-year-old but left them with the brain of a third-grader. Essentially, there is no quality here. Just not funny, and it's not bad enough to fit into that category of "so bad it's good." It's neither funny, racist, offensive or anything at all. It's not worth wasting your time watching. I watched this movie with a girlfriend and didn't chuckle once, I was simply bored. I miss the good old days of Blazing Saddles and good social commentary.

OMG...I can't believe all they hype about obesity and racism that is being flung at this movie. It's Eddie Murphy, guys! If you didn't expect both fat jokes and racism (or any kind of joke for that matter) in the movie then you need to go back and watch your Barney videos for a while! This movie was almost non-stop laughs for me as the dialect used is rooted from where I'm from! It wasn't supposed to be a masterpiece. It's supposed to be entertaining. If you looked at the movie poster or watched the trailers you'd know that this movie is what it is. It certainly wasn't the best film, but it certainly wasn't the worst. I think the one stars people are throwing around are because they are easily offended people with thin skin who don't know what's beyond the city limits they live in. I didn't pay to see this movie, but after seeing it, I wouldn't have minded if I did. Grow up, put your big girl panties on and believe it or not, you can enjoy a movie in the peace of your own mind and not try to start a revolution on IMDb through reviews. This is Eddie Murphy and a host of his Hollywood friends doing a great job at making people laugh.
