Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

The movie was a bit stereotypical as most of the movies that don't bring novel twists in the plot. A young owl that through misfortunes or misadventures reaches something it couldn't do at home. It identifies with novels that are bildungroman where the characters maturates while the events are folding up. I liked the animation and the resolution of it which reflected a great labor done by the animator. The climax of the movie was a bit unrelated and didn't build or perfectly match with the flow and plot of the whole and I think that there should have been some spices in order to keep it on.

I'd heard that this movie is surprisingly dark. Well, it isn't that bad. Sure it's got some themes that are quite heavy for a kid's movie, but so do classic Disney animations (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast). Legend of the Guardians is your basic fantasy adventure with a kind, young protagonist and his wacky companions. They must fight a villain who's assembling an army of bad guys and the protagonist's brother chooses The Dark Side. The thing is, all the characters are cute owls. They look gorgeous - you can see every feather stirring in the wind. All the visuals are pretty much breathtaking (for an animated film). There are some fight scenes but nothing really graphic happens. The owls wear funny pieces of armor and it's implied that they tear each other apart with their talons but the film is bloodless. In the end everybody learns a lesson. The story is based on a young adult fantasy novel. Personally I would've preferred an animation film like this based on Redwall.

How do I put this? Well, everybody praises Toy Story 3 for being the best animated film of 2010. Which, in some cases, yes it is. But an animated film directed by the guy who brought '300', 'Watchmen' and the upcoming 'Man of Steel' has to be a close second. The music, the acting, everything is perfect. Especially the visuals, my god. BUT; be warned. This is NOT a kids film. This is a family film suitable for kids. I can't put into words how surprised I was by this film (and I got chills from the trailer). Seriously, this is worth buying on Blu-Ray. If they re- released it for some unknown reason in cinemas, I would go see it. Definitely recommended.

Based on a revered children's book by Kathryn Lasky tells an almost George Lucas type story about the legendary owls of Ga'Hoole, a protectors of the race, aimed at offering peace and fighting off evil. Evil here has the guise of Metalbeak (Joel Edgerton), who utilising brainwashed and corrupted owls to bring about destruction and afford himself ultimate power. Two young barn owls Soren (Jim Sturgess) and Kludd (Ryan Kwanten) are captured by Metalbeaks' forces. Kludd quickly becomes enticed by the vestiges of power, while Soren desperately escapes with an elf owl Gylfie (Emily Barclay), soon venturing to alert the mythical guardians from Ga'hoole of the impeding doom.Generic and lacklustre Zack Snyder again manages to bring in the style and the stunning visuals, but lacks sufficient regard for storytelling and character-build. Too brutal for younger viewers, whilst insufficiently well-rounded to engulf older audiences, "Legend of the Guardians" lingers in between. Good and evil are simple guises, while the inevitable confrontation occurs without much triumphant virtue. Overall a tedious, borderline trite and semi-intriguing tale, which fails to be lifted by some nifty characters, instead seems overly focused on getting all the elements of the 'guideline to making a Hollywood epic' in place, including obligatory, but poorly introduced comedic relief. Instead it always feels rushed to the point (with some ridiculously obsessive pacing issues) and the key focus made on pretty pictures: the owls, their environment and the overall settings feel extremely realistic.
