I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

Based on Ray Russell's novel of the same title, Incubus is all about demon rape. There's really no other way to say it. If you're looking for the definitive word on the subject, this movie would probably be your best choice. And hey, John Cassavetes is in it!The film opens in a rock quarry where Mandy and her boyfriend are swimming. More likely, they're fooling around until an unseen force caves in the dude's head and attacks her, putting her in the hospital with a ruptured uterus. While all this is going on, Tim Galen, a local teen, dreams of hooded men tying a woman down and torturing her.Dr. Sam Cordell (Cassavetes) is treating the girl and we soon learn a lot about his life. His wife has recently died, he's relocated to the town of Galen following a scandal and his daughter, Jenny, doesn't really get along with him. Oh yeah - and she's also dating Tim.Sheriff Hank Walden (John Ireland, whose career stretches from classics like All the King's Men and I Saw What You Did to Satan's Cheerleaders) and reporter Laura Kincaid are on the case too, which expands when a librarian is killed and murdered. It turns out that she has red semen inside her body - so much semen that she's literally been filled up and destroyed by it. If you're thinking this is a totally scummy storyline, well, buckle up.The rapes and murders continue and every single time, young Tim is having the dream while they happen, including an attack at a movie theater where he's gone to try and distract himself. Look for an appearance by a really young Bruce Dickinson singing for his pre-Iron Maiden band Samson in this scene! What is Dr. Sam doing? Oh, you know, showing Laura photos of his recently deceased second wife - the reason why he left wherever it was he lived before - and she looks exactly like the reporter. She has some news, too. The town of Galen has a long history of Satanic activity and these rape crimes are nothing new.Is Tim the killer? Was his mother a witch? Or is his family part of a long line of witch hunters? Is the real killer a shapeshifting incubus, which rapes women in their dreams? We get our answers pretty quickly. Sam tries to induce Tim's demonic state while Laura takes Jenny up to bed. Tim tries to attack Laura with a witch hunting dagger his grandmother has given him, but Sam stops the boy and kills him. That's when we learn that Laura had been the incubus all along. As she lovingly holds Sam, he looks to the bed where his dead daughter is bleeding between the legs.Yes. That's really the ending. I warned you that this film was rough, didn't I?Incubus was directed by John Hough, who was behind one of my favorite movies of all time, Twins of Evil. He also helmed The Legend of Hell House and both of Disney's Witch Mountain movies. It's written by Ray Russell, who also wrote plenty of other horror fiction that was made into movies and screenplays, including X the Man with the X-Ray Eyes, Mr. Sarndonicus, Zotz! and Roger Corman's The Premature Burial. While this movie moves slow and some subplots go nowhere, the last few minutes are exactly what you want the movie to be and Cassavetes is - as always - better than the material.

The supernatural has always been subject of personal interest. "Incubus" is a very fascinating movie of all sorts. Here you got and father and daughter who just moved into a small town, where gossip is common. A couple of young people are out having fun at a quarry, until nighttime, where the woman decides to get back at the boyfriend who played a joke on. For her, she was sexually assaulted by an unknown assailant. For the boyfriend, he was killed. The town goes into a panic, and a reporter comes to figure things out. The woman in the museum was next. She wasn't so fortunate. Her rape was so bad, she bled to death. There's a young man name Tim, who have nightmares about the rapes. He would dream them, but they seem to scare him. His mother died at the hands of the people who were wearing hoods like monks. Those nightmares constantly plague Tim, and the doctor would like to get to the bottom of it. Who would have guessed that the reporter would represent the doctor's late wife? And also the cause of Tim's nightmare? Well, this movie is intriguing enough. I enjoyed it very well. 3 out of 5 stars

I rented this back in the 80's and honestly can't remember anything specific about the movie - only that it is THE worst movie I have ever seen. This isn't one of those "it was so bad, it was funny". This isn't one of those "it was so gory, it leaves you with a bad feeling" movies. It wasn't even one of those "what the heck was that?" movies. I can't recall the performance of the actors, but it was poorly shot, the story was disjointed, and it had no definable style. When it was over, I was angry that I had wasted the time.I've seen plenty of movies I didn't understand because of unfamiliar cultures, styles and/or story-telling, but it was clear that those movies had some of those properties. The incubus has none.I actually contemplated NOT making a comment on this "piece" for fear that someone may watch it out of curiosity, but I am compelled to warn anyone who appreciates film to skip this movie.

This is the worst film I have ever seen. I don't know what the crew was thinking when they shot this, but I'm willing to bet they spent the majority of their time crying. The sound is poorly recorded. The video is grainy and dark, making it difficult to tell what's going on. The actors (read: people who owed the director money) couldn't act for their worthless lives, and the story was not one of the best I've ever seen.SPOILERS: When the father tells the girl that she shouldn't get too close to the townspeople in the beginning of the film, what the crap was he talking about? That, like many other things in this film, never comes up again anywhere in this film. When the farmer is killed in the barn, he has his foot shot off, and in the next scene when he flies out of the hayloft it's still attached to his leg. The dreams the coroner has are creepy, to be sure, but once again, they never make any sense and they never come up again. The ending, what the crap was wrong with that ending?? How did the daughter die? Why did no one seem to care? The characters aren't all that endearing. In fact, I spent the majority of my time wishing the characters would die horrible, horrible deaths, and was severely disappointed when many did not. The actual incubus, when it was finally shown, was laughable. it looked like Swamp-Thing's retarded brother. Quite frankly all of the "frightening" scenes were laughable. Even the nudity, something you'd figure a director couldn't possibly screw up, was made to be creepy. SPOILER AGAIN: in the beginning, when the daughter is naked in the shower with the door open (okay?), the father just stands there for a good solid minute watching her. I assume that the terrible secret the townspeople can't know is they're incestuous, but once again, that's never explained. And did anyone notice that the supposedly small town has a surprising number of large scale office buildings and high-rise apartments and general large city-sized hustle and bustle? This movie should not have been made. I regret ever hearing about it, and the director should be beaten with the original master reel for ever thinking he should do this film. If you don't have the budget for proper scene edits, good sound recording and overdubbing, and acceptable screenwriters, don't make a movie. I can't imagine what the writer of the original novel feels about this film, but I'd be scared to find out.Avoid this movie. Avoid it like the crap-ridden garbage pile that it is. I know it sounds like I'm being overly negative, but if you feel that way, go ahead and watch the movie. Just don't say I didn't warn you.
