Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.

... View MoreWhat an age we live in. Full of amazing visionary directors, CGI that is affordable yet can still be highly effective and story telling that has evolved and can be done in so many methods. Iceman does not come from this age. It is terrible and it doesn't even seem to care. It shamelessly seduces you with big budget box art before unzipping its pants and spraying you right in the face with force of a firehose. You are taken on an odd adventure involving 4 ancient warriors who were frozen in time and emerge from the frosty slumber only to find out that it is 2014 and they still have unfinished business. Donnie Yen plays our hero Ho Ying, who is being hunted down by his three childhood friends. Ying must also find the key to an ancient Indian time machine. What is this key? Its the penis of a god. Yep.The movie (with English subtitles, as i saw it) doesn't make sense. It has odd pacing and jokes that were funny in the 70's. It also tries to force "chemistry" between the two main characters but that and all the acting comes off as stiff and cold. The CGI is sub-par for it's budget and story is badly written with dumb plot elements. However, it was funny. That being said: 1 star. terrible.
... View More"Iceman" begins with a ship carrying what looks like three cryogenic tubes. Then, in a flashback, a Chinese officer is being accused of conspiring with the dreaded Japanese pirates back in the 17th century. However, when the Emperor of China's men try to apprehend him, his is transported to the present day Hong Kong--and you realize he's one of the guys in the cryo tubes. Here in the 21st century, he's out of place but also amazingly clever and helpful. I liked this part of the film. Soon, however, he's caught up in all sorts of intrigues and it all has to do with the Golden Wheel of Time and the god Shiva's penis (I am serious about this last part) and a bazillion cops trying to kill him. Can this visitor from the past take on a HUGE army of cops and win? When "Iceman" began, it felt a lot like I'd seen this sort of plot in another film. The French film "Les Visiteurs" (remade in the US as "Just Visiting") is a silly film where the hero is magically transported many centuries into the future. Here in the present, the knight is completely out of his element and is a bumbler. The film is played strictly for laughs. Here with "Iceman", however, when the soldier is magically transported into the future, he inexplicably is like superman! Not only does he possess nearly god-like fighting and intellectual powers at times, but he also seems to magically understand technology--and he inexplicably uses the internet and destroys surveillance cameras! To me, none of this really made a lot of sense. How could a man from centuries before know how to do an internet search or understand what cameras are?! For me, this was a big problem with Iceman--it just didn't make a lot of sense. If a man is somehow transported to today from the distant past, the comical way "Les Visiteurs" handled it seems much, much more likely--with the guy drinking from toilets and getting into one problem after another. Instead, it goes from being a bit charming to being very confusing and very violent. Then, it becomes a huge, explosive finale where there are tons of explosions and violence and mindless mayhem. The charm just doesn't last very long.So is it worth seeing? Well, if you have nothing better to do...sure. But as I mentioned above, quite a bit about the hero just didn't make a lot of sense in "Iceman". Instead, while I never loved "Les Visiteurs", I'd recommend you see it over "Iceman".
... View MoreA short review so that I don't give out too many spoilers.A Donnie Yen movie, hence there are many unreasonably high expectations from people, including myself. As a regularly movie goer, who watches Movie every weekend, i compare this movie to other movies I have watched, not just Donnie Yen movies. This is not a Ip Man, Flashpoint style movie where Yen plays a serious character with strong motivations. In this movie, He Ying(Yen) is a curious, daring and powerful martial artist trying to understand 21st Century Hong Kong, adapting to the current world while being chased after by his sworn brothers. With the inclusion of Wang Bao Qiang, arguably China's most talented comedic actor, one must understand that this is more of an action comedy than a dark and gritty action film(Wuxia 2012).Go into the cinema and this movie brings you tremendous joy. This is a 2 part movie, and coming out from the cinema, i can hear people saying they can't wait for the 2nd one. Neither can I.
... View MoreHonestly, I was tricked by the previous review hence i thought the movie was really bad and I went into the theater with zero expectations. But the results... were simply. Amazing. Another classic Chinese martial arts movie which will continue to be remembered for generations to come. This movie is not your typical Donnie Yen ass-kicking movie, this is a movie with a lot of feelings, touching yet Comedic. The whole cinema was laughing every few minutes and the actions were impeccable. The last fight scene is easily one of the best action scenes in the past 3 - 4 years of Movies.Donnie Yen has to pretend to be a Ming Dynasty warrior trying to fit into our 21st century, but obviously he is way too powerful physically and has to learn the ropes of adapting, and this has led to many funny moments throughout the movie. The ending in particular was very exciting, and then..boom, something unexpected happens, a plot twist and it becomes really touching where I can see people in the audience tearing.Definitely a must watch!Note: There is a part 2 coming out in October!
