It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.

what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

Son of God (2014): Dir: Christopher Spencer / Cast: Diogo Morgado, Darwin Shaw, Sebastian Knapp, Greg Hicks, Roma Downey: This is the definite form of authority. Jesus born in a manger in the most humble manner for which he descends upon his followers. This is based on the mini series The Bible, which was successful and director Christopher Spencer brings portions of it to the big screen. The ultimate Christ film is The Passion of the Christ. This film doesn't match it because it becomes disjointed with regards to what is included here and what isn't. We have a brief flashback of the death of John the Baptist that was likely more detailed and fully realized in the mini series. We witness the oppression of the Romans as well as a variety of miracles performed by Jesus. We meet the disciples and more importantly we witness the arrest, trial, death, and ultimately the resurrection. Diogo Morgado portrays the humble nature of Christ. Darwin Shaw plays Peter whose loyalty is obvious despite denying Christ three times when pressure builds up. Sebastian Knapp plays John who narrates from exile. He is the last living disciple. Greg Hicks plays Pilate who is more or less pressured and influenced to sentence Christ to death by crucifixion. Roma Downey plays virgin Mary who must witness the events as they unfold. The film is better made than perhaps it indicates coming from a mini series but The Passion of the Christ is artistically done with innovative shots and use of lighting. Son of God presents the gospel disjointedly but should open discussion for its target audience. Score: 9 / 10

I liked it. It did have my issues. For example, he calls Peter by that name right off, rather than Simon. Big issue. The name was changed so that Peter could be called "rock" to signify his deep faith as the Fathers teach us.Also the trial thing before Pilate is way off. And Pilate, who is a saint in the Orthodox tradition (he converted)is depicted too harshly. True, he was harsh before he converted, but in the case of Christ's Passion, he was mild, trying to avoid punishing him so far as possible. They depicted his wife, Claudia (St. Claudia) rather well, though not as clearly as they could have. Pilate seemed a mix of cruel and more kind. Gibson did a good job of balancing it out. Likely because he researched the oral traditions about Pilate and Claudia, who converted. There are a few accounts, generally positive, of this. The main point is that the whole trial is way off. It does not give the full account, and he was tried in private in this movie. Pilate asked the whole "what is truth" in some inner place in his palace. Totally off. How did the Gospel writers know this happened then? They wrote based on what they saw, which is why their are small discrepancies in the Gospel accounts, though yes they were guided by the Holy Spirit, etc. Then there is the Nicodemus thing. It's inaccurate how they depict his going to Jesus. He came a NIGHT according to St John, not day like in the film.Anyway, the good points. A thing many may not notice, but Mary is depicted in blue according the Catholic tradition--look at Marian art and notice this. Blue signifies her purity. Also, the bread and wine clearly are represented as literal body and blood. Some have said this is hippy love dovey. I do not think so. Maybe because they do not know the understanding of Christ according to the one, holy, catholic and apostolic tradition, but a fundamentalist one. They might do well to read the compassionate Desert Fathers, who though they lived strict lives, taught gentleness and love. There are many doctrinal accuracies in this movie first of all that the non-Christian watcher may not notice. Or the Protestant perhaps, that is someone who has no understanding of the Fathers of the Church. I do not see how Jesus was some hippy in this movie. I just do not see it. I think he is depicted accurately. I was very happy to see that this movie was not full of vile heresy. Hollywood's Jesus is often, well....Anyway, aside from the errors of Scripture on a superficial level, the substance of the Gospel and doctrine are followed. It is clearly a very Roman Catholic leaning film. Maybe that is why some Christians do not like it.

As a Catholic, I was looking forward to seeing Son of God. Although I had not seen the mini- series this is based on, I didn't care. I knew this would not be as good as the series, but seeing this first would make my experience with it better. I had heard negative reviews towards this, most of which were harsh, but I understand. Not many feature films cover Jesus' full life. The ones that do are epics and this is 136 minutes. Despite being condensed, I was surprised to see how poor the first half was. Everything before Palm Sunday is a sloppy mess with everything randomly thrown in at different spots. There's no build-up, follow-through, transition, or full segment. I was very unimpressed. But then Palm Sunday happened...Diogo Mordago plays a hip, charismatic Jesus that I liked. He can relate to people and have fun with them. I heard negative feedback about his performance but I liked it. Who wouldn't want God to be tender and charismatic? He is the only thing that got me through the first little bit. Palm Sunday is when the structure and storytelling improves to a high degree, but visible flaws fly...Son of God goes into detail on why people were deadset on Jesus dying on the cross. It is explained better than lots of other Jesus movies I've seen. This is a high point. When Jesus gets tortured and crucified, it is not as bad as Passion of Christ in 2004, but still brutal enough to be accurate. The accuracy in brutality of the crucifixion is played about perfectly. Sadly, flaws surround it which keeps it from living up to its potential. The first big flaw (after Palm Sunday) happens when Jesus gets arrested and Peter cuts off the guard's ear: everybody watches the ear being cut off and Jesus healing it, yet they arrest him anyway. Bible stuff aside, that is very unrealistic. In reality, they would have told Pilate about what happened. In the other Jesus movies, all hell breaks loose with nobody really noticing anything and the guard being severely overwhelmed. The next flaw happens when Peter denies Jesus. Peter is scared that he will die and denies him in the spur of the moment, then realizes his sin after the third deny. In this, Peter is looking at Jesus the whole time. Bible stuff aside, what a cruel thing to do. Peter was Jesus' best friend, so there's no way that happened the way it did here. Roma Downey also plays a poor Virgin Mary and all she does is unrealistic. These flaws are too big to ignore and diminish the scenes' values. The resurrection bit was very well done, letting the movie end on a high note. Kudos to them. But everything before could have been better. Not sure how everything was edited (if it was all newly filmed or taken from the series), but I can't say enough how poor the pre-Palm Sunday bit was. And all the significant flaws that happened post-Palm Sunday were easily avoidable. Luckily, there are redeeming qualities that are relatable and make this a worthy watch. Ownable? No, but see this at least once. 6.5/10

How dare we can write horrible reviews or even be a critic of a movie that is about our savior??? this movie was amazing and depicted Christ's suffering perfectly! This movie isn't only amazing but it shows how much God loves us. It breaks my heart that we would say such horrible things about this true and amazing story. I am so glad that it made so much money in theaters and i am so glad that people saw it. :)I love God and I love that movies like this were out this year! Glory to god! people need to hear the message of Christ and they need to hear the gospel. People need to hear and see this story and they need to know God loves them and they need to know that god cares about them. They need to know that there's something more to this life.
