Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

Grave Encounters was an okay movie. I loved the concept of it, the way that the building trapped them in there and shit like that was great but the actors were bad and it relied too much on jump scares so it turned out to be a bad movie.

After reading most of the other reviews, I thought I was in for one of the scariest movies I had ever seen. I couldn't have been more surprised.But something about it just kept falling short for me, and I don't really no why. Creepy atmosphere? Yep, extremely creepy, but just not filmed in a way to maximize it.Jump scares? Yes they were there, but for some reason they just weren't really scary. Perhaps they were telegraphed to the point that I knew they were coming.Creepy ghosts? Yes, but once again they just fell short of being scary for me.I wouldn't say this is a bad movie, because the acting and everything is pretty solid, it just wasn't really scary. All the right elements were there, between the location, sound, etc., it just didn't really do it for me.***Minor Spoiler Alert*** In fact I found myself picking out spots in the movie that WOULD have made great places for jump-scares and surprises, but they just didn't get used for that. Ex: it's a horror film staple these days to have the camera on a particular character, pan away from the character, then return to them a moment later with a ghost/monster right behind/next to them. It's cheap, but it works well. This movie had TONS of places where that would have been fantastic, but I don't recall seeing that technique used even once.There were all kinds of long, dark hallway shots that would have been perfect for showing a ghost/spirit in the background, but it never happened. The movie was filled with shots of the characters roaming the dark halls of an abandoned mental asylum, walking blind into dark/creepy rooms, so I was waiting for them to round the corner and have something scary right there in your face, but that never happened either.I'm not saying all horror/scary movies should follow the tried-and- true techniques all the time, but this movie could have really been well-served to use a few of them.I'm giving it a 5/10 because although it wasn't a bad or poorly produced movie, it just wasn't really scary for a horror movie. Plenty of other people thought it was though, so by all means check it out if you're so inclined.

Inspired from those awful & laughable ghost-investigation television programs, Ghost Encounters is a fine entry in the found-footage subgenre of horror when compared to its counterparts, for it makes good use of genre elements over the course of its runtime to carve a few scary & effective moments but still fails to leave a memorable impression once it's over.The story of Grave Encounters concerns the crew of a ghost-hunting reality television show who decide to lock themselves up inside a reportedly haunted & abandoned mental asylum for a night to document the paranormal activities on camera. But as the night progresses, they discover that the building is more than just haunted and encounter much more than they bargained for.Written & directed by The Vicious Brothers, the notoriety surrounding the mental asylum is quickly skimmed over and the main plot kicks into action soon after all the character are introduced. The filmmakers strictly adhere to the format of those paranormal reality programs by taking this story through the same route, however, unlike those episodes, things do get intense & interesting after a while.Also, unlike most found-footage features, the POV shooting does make sense here and the night vision camera-work & hand-held photography is properly carried out. Editing provides a good pace to the story but the change in direction that its plot later undergoes was uncalled for. As for the performances, the cast plays their part well but none of them ever manage to stand out.On an overall scale, Grave Encounters delivers some good scares and keeps them coming throughout its runtime but even though some of those frightening moments are downright chilling, they still carry a tone of familiarity, for it's something that most horror aficionados have encountered before. Not a bad start to their filmmaking career, The Vicious Brothers' directorial debut does get many things right but just not enough to set itself apart from the norm.

We all do it, you know, play movies in the background while we are doing other things around the home - this is not even worth doing that.After watching the film, you have to wonder how many family, friends and actors from the flicks actually rate these things online.First, the "found footage" films typically follow the same script, so taking that into account with a grain of salt. You actually need something for nausea. Evidently the film makers thought - the more they moved and shoot the camera, the more realistic it would make the film - fail. You quickly get a headache and even dizzy at some points. Zoom in, zoom out, focus, unfocus - repeat literally every two seconds.Note to found footage film makers, even the cheapest cameras now have antishake ..... stop with the shaky cams already.The acting is marginal. You can see the main characters trying very hard to act out everything they know about being - an actor, playing a part, that not technically supposed to be an acting part.The story you can clearly tell is copying ghost adventures...
