The Soviets have developed a revolutionary new jet fighter, called 'Firefox'. Worried that the jet will be used as a first-strike weapon—as there are rumours that it is undetectable by radar—the British send ex-Vietnam War pilot, Mitchell Gant on a covert mission into the Soviet Union to steal the Firefox.

An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.

It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.

Don't expect outdated special effects - they are great! Just like with all the spy movies that I've seen, I have no idea what this one is about either, but I stay for the great action scenes, the hot actor and maybe some surprises along the way. And lo and behold, this movie doesn't let me down. The culmination is EVERYTHING! The flying scenes are better than Top Gun, released several years later. It's highly polished visual effects art.

For some reason I cannot quite put a finger on, this movie is a must-see, and a valuable addition to "movies of depth and character" that should be on your list.Clint Eastwood, far from his very apparent physical limitations, yet just as strong as his spirited good will, as seen by his role in "Gran Torino", manages to grip us to his side and pray for a good outcome, in FireFox.The movie seems slow-going, yet...it has that magic that will make you watch it at LEAST 10 times, if not more...simply because the climax and "dénouement" make it SO WORTH the while. You have to watch it through one time before you are hopelessly and helplessly hooked to watching it again, and again...and again.

Espionage, Intrigue, And Action is how I would sum-up this Clint Eastwood, underrated, film classic. The aircraft in the movie, Soviet fighter aircraft (MiG-31, NATO code name "Firefox"), reminds me of the Stealth Bomber in a round about way. The movie's aircraft is invisible to radar - the real life Stealth Bomber is very low to invisible on radar. This "Firefox" aircraft has weapons on it that are controlled by thoughts of the pilot. This part of the film is also partly based on reality because there is brain to computer technology in real life. See: brain–computer interface (BCI), mind-machine interface (MMI), direct neural interface (DNI), synthetic telepathy interface (STI) or a brain–machine interface (BMI).I found the movie to be believable and just simply a good story. It is refreshing to see Clint Eastwood in a very different role, it's nice to see him play something different instead of the lead in a Western or a cop role.9/10

I was in basic training in the Army when this movie came out. This was back in the 80's when we hated the Russians. Here I was sitting in an Army theater in Ft Sill, OK watching Clint kick some Ruskie tails. At the end I was in this crowd of closely shaved hot heads cheering it all on. Compared to today the special effects are slack and the scenes hardly believable. That did not matter way back then. Clint had that classic 'eyeball jitter' look and that's all that mattered. This movie is perfect for some gold old Sunday afternoon fun when the wife and kids are out somewhere and you are hanging out with the dog on the couch.
