In the early 1900's, Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan) returns from school in England, and wishes to marry his childhood sweetheart Paro (Aishwarya Rai), who has loved him devotedly all the time he's been away. His family objects, and he leaves Paro to debauch in a brothel, where he meets Chandramuki (Madhuri Dixit) who falls in love with him. The two women bond over their shared love of Devdas, but are powerless to help him as he slips into drunkenness.Based on a 1917 novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay, the plot is tight and engrossing. All three main actors are near perfection in their roles. The supporting cast (which includes Jackie Shroff) are also solid. The music is good and the dances breath-taking. The extravagant costumes and sets are a feast for the eyes. This is a serious drama that will keep the viewer entranced to the very end.

The movie is based on a Fiction Bengali story by Sharat Chandra Chatterjee but it can be applied to real life too .Devdas is a upper class guy who lives his life according to his wish much to the chagrin of his practical family and society (In India). He is a rebel not only to his family but to himself. He has a childhood friend Paro which then transforms into a romantic relationship. Paro and Devdas are absolutely in love with each other. But as is true in fiction as in real life, Love is something extremely dangerous. It is risky fraught with dangers to life itself !. But people who are in Love hardly care about this. They live a life moment to moment without thinking about either the past or the future. As is usual someone else gets into the way of Love and as it happens in real life more often than not it is your own family which comes into the way.So Devdas's family is opposed to their union especially his dad. Devdas goes against his family but in that moment of weakness he is not strong enough and loses Paro forever. He realizes his mistake but it is too late. Paro is already prepared for her marriage.Resigned in love, Devdas loses himself. He drinks and drinks only to forget Paro but he cannot. Meanwhile, a courtesan Chandramukhi seeing the pain of Devdas falls in love with him.The story moves on with the tragedy of Devdas's death. As is always the case Love could kill you and it does kill Devdas. There is a saying - Love is a slow suicide and how true it is.

Neither the novel was a work of art, nor any film based on it. Devdas is shockingly among the most boring, unidimensional characters Indian literature could have possibly produced! Even Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay had admitted that the novel was a mistake he committed during his 20s; an age when almost all of the youth is into self pitying and self destruction. Shah Rukh khan as Devdas overacts and makes you laugh at times when he cries out loud, and sounds like a hungry goat! With some mediocre acting and an overdose of glitz, this melodramatic crap isn't worth watching for any reason, except for some soothing music.Rating: SUPER DUD!PS: On contrary, Anurag Kashyap's DEV-D is a brilliant attempt, which gives you a positive outlook of the immensely negative character.

SLB is a god gifted director to bollywood and i am again spellbound by his work. He is the only director who can remake a super hit 1960s movie in 2002 with the same essence. This movie was marvelously made with a powerful star cast with mesmerizing scenes, dialogues and music at the same time.Aishwarya rai has done her best and Madhuri was the same refreshing as 8 years ago. Shahrukh khan to put his best and this makes this movies unforgettable.I consider this movie as one of the best movies made in India. I recommend this movie to everyone because even after the end, this movie won't get out of your mind.
