Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.

I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

Dark Angel (1990) ** 1/2 (out of 4) Tough cop Jack Caine (Dolph Lundgren) is forced to team up with a FBI agent (Brian Benben) after a series of bizarre murders. It turns out that an alien has come to Earth with a plan for some heroin.DARK ANGEL is a science fiction movie that certainly shouldn't be confused with 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. If you need your sci-fi to be high art then you'll want to avoid this film but if you're a fan of mindless action then you'll find this gem to be highly entertaining. This is exactly what you'd expect a low-budget action movie from this period to be like. The best thing going for this film is its camp value as there are quite a few scenes that are rather hilarious. One such example is the acting of Lundgren. Yes, the big guy is fun to watch but he certainly wasn't a very good actor and this can be seen in his attempts at being serious or romantic. The murder weapon is basically a CD mixed with the weapon from PHANTASM and it really makes for some violent fun.Lundgren and Benben have some nice chemistry together and certainly make their cop-buddy thing work. The action scenes certainly show their budget limits but they too are entertaining. DARK ANGEL isn't a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination but it's fun for fans of the genre.

Jack Caine is a Houston cop who's mission is to stop the drugs trade and the number one supplier Victor Manning.Whilst involved in an undercover operation to entrap Manning, his partner gets killed, and a sinister newcomer enters the scene.Along with F.B.I. agent Smith, the two investigate a spate of mysterious deaths; normal people dying of massive heroin overdoses and bearing the same horrific puncture marks on the forehead. This, coupled with Caine's own evidence, indicates an alien force is present on the streets of Houston, killing and gathering stocks of a rare drug found only in the brain...In the late eighties, early nineties, stars like Van Damme, Seagal, and Lundgren had moderate success at the box office. The movies were not for everyones palate, but if you were a fan of eighties action, you were sold straight away. This has to be Lundgrens best stand alone feature, it's high concept, exciting, and most of all, a lot of fun.The man can't act at all, which is clearly evident when he finds his partner dead. But your not watching this for the performances, your watching this to see a huge alien with funny eyes shooting a CD from his sleeve, and run like he has lots of springs in his shoes.Considering it's age, and the synth soundtrack by Jan Hammer, it's aged really well, and it's one of those action movies that just gets better with every viewing..

It could have been just a drug-related cop thriller where "the bad guy" could have possessed much of the appearance and skills he used as an alien; the sci-fi addition gives some awkward undertone as there were no state-of-the-art technical solutions available in the end of 1980ies. The plot is OK (with several influences from Terminator, though) and the cast beginning with Dolph Lundgren (Houston cop Jack Caine) and Matthias Hues (extra-terrestrial drug dealer Talec) get the most out of it. The ending is a bit trivial and abrupt, but does not spoil the overall picture. If you like movies with Lundgren, you will know what to expect and you will hardly be disappointed, although it is not among the best ones.

Effective B movie puts an ingenious spin on your standard issue buddy-cop movie. Dolph Lundgren (looking quite good in dark hair) is your typical maverick movie detective, a man named Jack Caine who's trying to bring down a criminal empire. Throwing things seriously askew is the arrival of a great big bad ass alien (Matthias Hues) with long blonde hair who does interesting things to people. His race is addicted to the drug otherwise known as human endorphins, so he extracts them from unwilling donors, after first shooting the people full of heroin. Caine, naturally, will stop at nothing to figure out what the hell is going on, and put an end to things, while sometimes being hindered and sometimes being helped by his unwanted new partner, FBI agent Arwood Smith (Brian Benben, who's engaging as always). Smith, as you can easily imagine, is a stickler for procedure, unlike the more instinctual Caine. Lundgren, who's fun to watch no matter how clichéd his part may be, and Benben get good odd couple chemistry going throughout this energetic movie, very well directed by stunt expert Craig R. Baxley, who'd previously done the Carl Weathers vehicle "Action Jackson". Betsy Brantley is appealing as Caine's coroner girlfriend, and a capable supporting cast full of familiar faces makes this highly agreeable viewing: Jim Haynie as Caine's boss, Sherman Howard (a.k.a. Bub The Zombie from "Day of the Dead") as smooth criminal Victor Manning, Sam Anderson as Manning's smarmy associate, Michael J. Pollard as goofy lowlife "Boner", Jesse Vint as early victim McMurphy, and Al Leong as a "luggage salesman". Mark Lowenthal contributes a memorable dose of comedy relief as an antsy scientist. This is speedy stuff, with decent makeup effects, a little bit of gore, and enough explosions to keep this from ever getting boring. As escapism goes, one could definitely do a lot worse than this. It would be hard to knock any movie where the villain's arsenal includes deadly flying CD's. While some of this is plenty predictable (such as the girlfriend getting fed up with our hero's unreliability), it's still good entertainment that gets off to a great start and ends with a big bang. The score by Jan Hammer of 'Miami Vice' fame is another strong asset. Worth a look for action fans. Eight out of 10.
