Cube: Cube is a story of six or so people who wake up in a... well... cube. On each side of the cube (including above and below), there are doors that lead to other cubes. Some of the cubes have deadly traps. There are three etched three-digit numbers on each cube that may provide a clue whether a particular cube is deadly and may also provide a clue on how to escape. Can the figure a way out without getting killed before they succumb to starvation or thirst or are simply driven mad?The Good: I have a lot of pet peeves in movies. One of the biggest is films that explain everything to the audience as if we were dimwitted fourth graders. The Cube explains nothing. I love this. We can decide which of the characters speculations are correct or even if any of them are. This creates a wonderfully engaging film. The film is well written with some excellent character arcs. Some of the characters are a little on the trope side of the equation (I am looking your way Rain Man) but overall it is an engaging group. There is a nice argument between just moving forward one cube at a time and the idea of trying to figure out what it all means. The movie really doesn't take sides once again allowing the viewer to decide which approach is best. The special effects are actually quite good when they make an appearance and the set keeps one's interest for the relatively brief running time. The Bad: The movie plays its room trap cards pretty early in a truly spectacular way. One wishes they had revisited that a bit more throughout the film. The film also suffers a little from the we ran out of cannon fodder too soon syndrome. It really isn't that hard to figure out is a three digit number is prime. If it is an even number or ends in a five it isn't prime as an example. Our so-called math expert in the group took way to long to figure some of these out.In Conclusion: This is a great example of how to make a low budget film with only seven actors, one set, and an engaging interesting script. The last part is a nut plenty of big-budget movies have yet to crack. Like the early Saw films, Cube is greater than the sum of its parts and a wonderful example of minimalism in a film.

All things considered, this is a movie worth checking out if you're a fan of mind-bending sci-fi flicks and, more importantly, aren't turned off by terrible acting. And let me be clear; the acting is awful.Save for the guy who plays "the Ren" (or is it "the Wren"?), I found every actor to be amateurish and oftentimes annoying. Subtlety isn't a strong suit for any of them, but neither is the "over-the-top" mode that a few of them seemingly default to. Unfortunately, this is a movie with a lot of dialogue and interaction between characters, so the poor acting is constantly in your face. To be fair, I'd never seen any of the actors (save for the Ren) in a movie prior to this one, which makes me think they might not've been very experienced when they made this movie. Also, I imagine the budget wasn't huge for this one, which probably limited the powers that be from hiring more experienced/talented actors. Still, it had to be mentioned. All that said, I think I'd recommend this to hardcore fans of sci-fi movies who value plot more than acting.

This is one of my favourite films. To get the flaws out of the way first. There are some B movie qualities to it. Like the acting is a sometimes bit cartoonish. Some of the editing and transition shots have dated poorly. There is also one character who is for the most part useless and does this annoying screeching thing. I wanted to step through my television and beat him to a bloody mess. Now for the positives. It is able to incorporate maths in a cool way. The premise is very strong. If you like science fiction and abstract puzzles, this film is a classic.

Cube is an extremely impressive movie, without a doubt. It begins with a shock and grips you for the remainder of the movie. The surprising thing is, however, that the rest of the movie engages you through a sustained moderate pace full of tension and dread, rather than the action-filled horror/adventure that is immediately suggested. Cube is essentially an equal parts nihilistic and humanitarian drama wrapped in a sci-fi/horror shell. It's not just a movie about survival. It's a movie about one's purpose, or lack thereof. The inner struggles and choices made by characters are just as important as the external physical challenges of the maze in which they find themselves. The characters are, for the most part, richly developed and most people will find themselves rooting for and against most of the characters at different moments. They are layered, flawed and fairly realistic depictions of real people in a horrible situation, trying to cling to humanity. That being said, there are a few credibility gaps with some of the talents of certain characters and with the overall premise, but this is not an odd or overly distracting flaw for a science fiction movie. I want to call out a couple things that were particularly impressive about this film. First of all, this was cast on a short budget with no A-listers, but most of the actors/actresses were memorable and believable as the characters they were given to portray. These are the types of roles given to journeymen character actors that may call to mind something such as "Hey, it's that guy/girl from Cube!" if you come across him or her in a different film playing a minor role. Keeping on message about the impressive nature of the film with the budget allowed, the set design and the effects are absolutely great, considering the budget. Heck, they are great on any budget. I've seen SEVERAL blockbuster films from the same time period that looked way worse from a graphical standpoint. This was a visual joy to watch. The only place this movie lost any love from me is that the ending wasn't quite "for me." That's not to say it was a bad ending, but it wasn't what I was looking for personally. However, I did feel completely impacted and emotionally heavy after the movie, which is always a sign that the director landed the final punch of the movie as intended. The influence of this creative movie, whether direct or indirect, has been felt subsequently in several other horror and thriller movies of the 2000's. Saw II instantly is brought to mind with elements of the premise and many of the character dynamics in play. Don't let that dissuade you from watching this if you are not a fan of the Saw franchise, though, as this movie's gore ratio is much lower and really only used to highlight certain scenes instead of as a driving force. This is a 9/10 movie for me that easily could be swayed to a 10 on repeat viewings and while noticing more details. Just remember: this is as much of a character-driven drama as it is a horror movie. It is NOT a slasher movie and it is not a GORE movie, although there are a few instances of gore. I'd recommend this to fans of the related genres as a creative and landmark film that really made the most of its budget and premise.
